OH and your universal joint at the PTO connection is pretty well shot, get a new universal in there before that comes completely apart. Put some oil on the push button lock for the PTO and some grease on all the moving parts, slip shaft and universal joint.

65 years ago, I bush-hogged with an 8N Ford. What I remember most, was the power takeoff was live, You could clutch it and the mower would keep pushing the tractor! After the mower pushed me through a bob wire fence at the end of the field, i learned to kick it out of gear and then try to brake. Memories!

Ford tractors do have a neutral safety switch that will not allow you to start the tractor unless you put the tractor in neutral. It will be a push button switch in front of the gear shift that has a mechanical device that will not allow you to push it all the way if the tractor's in gear. Unfortunately most of these were bypass by owners with a switch on a dash.
@RickReynolds-p5u

Yes, great safety feature and ours was NOT bypassed. It's a good thing because 12 year old me was standing in front of the rear tire, tractor in gear and my not so bright self pushing on the starter button wondering why it wouldn't crank... not my brightest moment.

Hey Tyler and Brittany, you guys are doing a great job... always enjoy your videos. Tyler I've done very similar things as you do for over 50yrs. I have a nice little "Z" scar from a twistaflex watch band (45yrs ago) on my left wrist from an alternator positive to something... and a permanent ring scar (25yrs ago) when my wedding band caught on a ladder bracket after I finished strapping to my truck rack, jumped down and if it hadn't been for my tip toes touching the ground, I fear my finger would be gone. The ring went right to the bone and is now shape like a pear. The ring now hangs on a nail. Jewelry and working men don't go together! It only takes a split second when these accidents happen. My thoughts.

I get the sentiment about not wanting to ever take your wedding ring off, but what good is a wedding ring if it's on the finger of a dead body? Also, do you think Brit would prefer to have a husband that wears it at all times or a husband that's alive during her lifetime? A ring is just a symbol; I'll get off my soapbox now... Edit: I hope that when I turn 70 I'll have a woman that says, "it's a li'l bumpy, but it's still fun"...😄

During the summer of 1966 I worked on my college's grounds crew. We had many acres of grass and an old beat-up worn-out Ford tractor + bush hog for the task. The seat was partially rusted out, so we used a feather pillow from one of the dorms to keep the tractor's seat from digging into the driver. I was the only farm boy on the crew, so the boss always put me on the tractor. One afternoon while mowing a rough section at fairly high speed, I hit a bump and bounced up off the seat. The pillow was right behind me. I landed on the seat but the pillow hit the ground...and I bush-hogged it! It looked like a white-out blizzard in July!

I just came upon a rake that someone left out here in the field. She asked her husband...what do I do . Point being...... his wife never looked back to see if things were working......or if the rake she was raking with was still behind the tractor !!!!!!! Pay attention whats going on at all times..... bush hogging along with square baling hay requires nearly more time looking back then looking foreword ! After all the person on the hay rack would like to know you know he exists ?? Not just keep baling.......never look back !!!!! This video reminds me of the learning days I went through !

We had a 49 Ford tractor back in the mid 50s. I said "had" becaue my older sister filled the gas tank up and forgot to put the gas cap back on. When she started it up, it caught fire. I am 71 now, and I can still remember my sister jumping off the seat, grabbing the pillow she was sitting on and beating the fire out. My dad bought a brand new Masey Ferguson diesel tractor after that little episode.

Pretty sure that Ford left the factory without the ability to start in gear and either it's worn out or has been modified to nullify the safety. My 9n and 8n have to be in neutral to start, it has a mechanical interlock between the shifter and start button all under the top cover. Henry didn't like hearing about his tractors killing people and made them as safe as possible for their time. Edit: i have a 54 NAA (same as jubilee) i will see if is button can be pushed in gear. Battery post not fitting. If you have a piece of 1/2" copper you can cut a slot in one side about an inch long. Then cut a 1/2" off the pipe. Now you have an adjustable sleeve that will fit over that skinny battery terminal and the ground clamp will tighten down on that. Won't wiggle off like the clamp that bottomed out on you.

The jubilee also known as the NAA doesn't have a two-stage clutch and it needs to have the overrunning clutch on the PTO shaft or else the mower will push the tractor when you try to stop unless you do some fancy clutching. Or myself on one of the others. Before that he more or less got me started on two Massy Harris “ Pony “ tractors. Which I preferred because the mowing machine was underneath the engine which kept your neck looking forward all the time rather than trying to watch what was behind on the Ford. I worked on a dairy farm back in 1966 when I was 14 years old and drove a Ford tractor just like that. I used to haul silage out to the cows with it. I had a full trailer of silage and accidentally let the clutch out too fast and popped a wheelie. Lesson learned.
