But seeing how easy you make it look you keep inspiring to build it myself. I am very capable of completing that task on my own but I put it off every day. Now I think I'm going to get it done. 🤔. Michygoss, I know that isn't your name, not the point here, I don't wanna get too technical but, I'm an Ex Bridge engineer, so here goes. The Purpose of this kind of foundation is that the weak point is always going to be the the ground to structure interface, so with that in mind a person can't rely on the foundation to be solid so He/She must construct the structure solid, and allow for movement in the support, ie foundation, l suggest that with that in mind a person must solidify the posts to the structure in such a way, (braces, Plywood gussets etc.) in order to mitigate the anticipated movement of the footing, if the connection point of the post to footing, is too unforgiving then the damage caused by the inevitable movement, of the footing, will cause structural damage. So in essence the wedges placed to help in construction should be removed after construction, to allow for a certain amount of movement. Bridges allow for both types of movement and use bearings, or bearing plates, to maintain Structural integrity, while allowing for the inevitable Expansion of Contraction.

Suggest you consider using a water level instead of a string level on your next rustic build. It's an ancient but simple tool that consists of a bucket of water, a long length of small diameter plastic tubing, and some food coloring. The coloring will make it easier to see the water level in the tube. Place the bucket full of water at a fixed spot, then fill the tube by creating a siphon. The bucket must be at an elevation, which allows for a level equilibrium to be reached between the water levels in the bucket and tube without draining the bucket. Use the level in the tube to establish reference points/marks on each one of your vertical supports. Measure up from these marks, which will all be at the same elevation, and then cut the vertical supports at the desired height. You may want to go to KZbin for hints on how to use the water level. Use food grade antifreeze in subzero temperatures for obvious reasons 😊. -Greg PS: Love your really serious hammer and your vlogs.

@@gregwoollacott2618 yes I agree and as an old Union construction plumber I have used your way but guess what, I’ll take a laser level every time now, battery of course. Lol with color glasses the better models provide in any light condition you clear visioned. My personal choice is Hilti.

Fun fact... I got into it with my boss a couple years ago regarding the use of impacts to run screws. The ENTIRE factory used impacts to run self-tappers into steel, so I did some research. Every single company that makes self-tappers specifies DO NOT USE AN IMPACT. LOL I even called a couple of them and talked to their support guys and they said the same thing. It's the same with decking screws, they say to not use an impact, yet everyone does it. I had trouble running Camo screws into Trex last summer so I called the local supplier and the first thing they asked me was "Were you using an impact tool?" LOL (I wasn't)
