This provides some educational info on mowing for hay. We had another short day of mowing for silage. Rain coming in the afternoon.

We had to 2 conditioners because my grandfather liked to have a healthy amount of clover in the hay mix;we called them the crushers and would run the hay through both of them; I remember having hay down and it being obvious that we were going to get rain and how, and grandfather saying we're not going to let this good of hay get ruined we're going to bail it up and it was purty green so we stacked it up outside and tarpt it and when it was time to feed that hay and we opened up the tarp we had bailedge and hallelujah we never put siledge in the silo or the pit again 🙂

Sounds risky. Glad it never got too hot and caught fire. I finished with a partial bale (silage) the other night and just let it out by the shop. The next day I put my hand in it and it's amazing how hot it was. Mold or fire. Have to be careful of either with moisture in the hay.

Yes it can be; my grandfather was a natural genius if everything wasn't right for it to come out right he wouldn't of done it and he continued to do it under much better conditions and that way we didn't have put any silage in the silo or our old fashioned pit that came with the farm wich was literally a hole in the ground when you were taking what was above ground it was OK to deal with but the further down you got it was horrible you needed a ramp to get you and your wheelbarrow of silage in and out so not having to deal with that or being in the silo was a great improvement; on one of the neighbors farms he would bail his hay green and spray something on the bails with an attachment on the back end of the square bailer now that was really not fun the bails were really heavy and whatever it was that got sprayed on the bails would get on you and it would burn and itch and when you'd get done I'd park by the bridge by our farm and jump in the river to get it off
