This sounds more 80's than any Retro-wave I've ever heard! It's the Minder theme tune meets Grange Hill meets Only Fools and Horses plus more. 'Relative Poverty': the never-made lost 1980's BBC sitcom.

The singer Lawrence has been doing stuff like this since 79! I suggest you check out the compilation album Novelty Rock by Denim (one of Lawrence's former groups). It's here in it's entireity on KZbin, but it's hard to find elsewhere.

@@Druphus No he hasn't! Felt - the band he formed and fronted 1979 - 90 was far superior to this. Their music was sombre and majestic and trickled into your soul and just made it better. Felt are still remembered as a highly influential band whose music most definitely punched above its weight, especially given that hardly anybody actually heard them at the time. For the last 30 years Lawrence has devoted himself to bubblegum pop. Which is fine, it's very catchy but it's ephemeral. You hear it and then you forget it. This song sounds like Pam Ayres wrote the lyrics, Olly Murrs sang it, and Barbara Streisand endorsed it. Lawrence has persistently refused to reform Felt - which would surely give him the platform he has spent his entire adult life pining for. Which forces me to wonder: is the real reason he won't reform Felt because that band was really a group effort? That Felt were really that good because Maurice Deebank's and Gary Ainge's and Martin Duffy's input were equal to his?

@@Druphus Indeed, I was listening to Denim when they were current, saw the Middle of the Road video on the Chart Show and previous to that my big brother was into Felt after being introduced to them at Uni.

@@nobbynoris Felt were very very good but there are 6 or 7 Denim tracks that outclass anything they did on a musical and emotive lyrical level. Primitive Painters for example is a wonderful soundscape with a simple repeated chord progression but with little development. The execution is also amateurish. Everyone has their own musical preferences but Don't bite too much out of the Apple, Osmonds, Glitter on your Face, have intensely personal and moving lyrics alongside epic soundscapes with well considered chordal and musical progression. Admittedly top-level producers were involved for sure but on almost every level it's many steps up artistically from Felt. Tbf I'm not familiar with all the Felt albums but There's a lot more to Lawrence than bubblegum. He's always written about life as he finds it be that from genocide in Rwanda to poverty in the UK. The difference between then and now is he's grown up and seen the absurdity of the World which explains his 'you have to laugh or you'd cry' philosophy. As to reforming Felt he's a purist and an artist and those sorts of people are always looking forward - which is why he also refuses to reform or even play Denim.

It's a good song. I've always liked tower blocks. I could see myself in an alternative life where I lived in some soviet breezeblock monstrosity with that lissom young lady from the video, and Lawrence is our neighbour, who drops in every so often because he wants us to be the first to hear his new composition (which never goes anywhere) and we're always nice to him and give him plenty of hot, sweet tea.

Heard this on 6 music last night and bloody love it, so fitting for my life right now (except I’m on less than a tenner a day!). The upbeat happy tune juxtaposition… top marks. Wish I could afford to pay the artist. Come round for a cheap cuppa and fag if you’re passing my way mate.
