This piece was published posthumously. It is thaught that the central part (3:33 to 5:56) was added by Stadler. I think that Stadler, when he completed this work of Mozart, took inspiration (above all from 4:16 on) from an expressive passage in the slow movement of the Piano Sonata n. 59 in E flat major, Hob. XVI:49, "Genzinger", of Haydn. You can hear this passage here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWPOhmava7aZpa8 from 3 min. 54 sec. to 5 min. 45 sec. Another possible source is the piano sonata op. 10 of Dussek, here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2a2mpdur6udm6M from 5 min. 8 sec on. This sonata of Dussek was published c. 1789.

Hi, what’s the source? I mean, who says that Stadler added that central part?

@@maria.4.4.1 After the initial repeat EVERYTHING else is Stadler. Mozart left copious amounts of work unfinished - more than any other Master. Some completed his works in a slapdash manner (as in the Fantasy in D minor which has about 8 bars just tacked on at the end in a completely un-Mozartean manner) - whereas Stadler tempered his creativity with sticking to source methods and materials as much as possible (as with his similarly completed sonata movement in G minor K 312). In fact this piece was not originally a piano work at all but a violin and piano piece - Mozart only began the violin part at bar 22 and it tails off at 28 completely.

If you took both repeats the piece would be nearly 19 minutes long, which would have to be the longest single movement Mozart, or probably anyone in the 18th century, ever wrote--

The piece originally is a fragment for piano and violin by Mozart. It was later completed for piano alone by Maximilian Stadler. See Mozart’s original here kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpfYiJekgcxkf9U
