Mozart was still 24 years old when this masterpiece was compos’d (between October 1780 & Jan 1781) and premier’d in Munich at the Cuvilles Theatre in Munich under the expert direction of Christian Cannabich on 29 Jan 1781 barely 2 days after his 25th birthday but only having 3 performances - one wonders why only 3…perhaps his writing for Castrati for the male parts weaken’d the modern Gluckian touch and the use of naturae voci would have produc’d a more natural result - as with his 1786 revival which employed more recitativi accompagnati & naturae voci, who knows… M. earlier had written to his father back home in Salzburg that he had completely to re-write so many arias & ensembles for the demanding cast that ‘I can tell you now that I have written enough Musik for at least TWO Operas’ and his incessant & caviling demands towards his librettist Varesco [sending the libretto from Salzburg piecemeal] ‘was only necessary because I need ev’ry line to be exactiy right and in-line with my intentions down to a T’ (there’s a Virgo-rising for you !) All this despite Wagner’s assertion that ‘Mozart set any libretto that came his way regardless of its value’ - which we now know to be an utter falsehood - quite the very opposite of the truth… which just goes to shew how far we’ve come in understanding Mozart’s lapidary approach to dramaturgy, which following Idomoneo gave rise to such operatic greats as Le Nozze di Figaro, D: Giovanni, Cosi fan Tutte, La Clemenza di Tito & Die Zauberfloete- one shudders to think if he had not unexpectedly died ‘catching ev’ryone quite by surprise’ [Franz Suessmayr, 1801] before his 36th [!] birthday how many other great operatic masterpieces (including several major adaptations of Shakespeare, if we are to believe his Widow Constanza years later) would have enter’d the permanent repertoire of ‘Western Art Music’ !!

Superb playing and soloists .Wasn't sure about the tenor diamante ...But it really works .. Wonderful .to see a period faithful production after seeing so much nonsense for YEARS ! :)
