One of the amazing advantages of the internet is that someone gets to post and we get to listen to some of the great recordings of the past. I had the privilege of being the producer for these recordings with John Eliot Gardiner and these wonderful singers and musicians, that we recorded for Philips at the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona. It is great to hear the production again and to notice that the recorded sound and the mixes still work. Enjoy!

Yes, I do too. The two sopranos seem born to sing together they blend so well. And the choir is just about faultless. Superb vehicle overall for music coming from the gods.

There is a video of this same masterpiece being lead by this same conductor several years later, on the Nobel prize, if I am not wrong, 2008. This choir is as great at the Nobel prize presentation choir. Soloists are different in performance, and great as well!

The choir and soloists singing without scores. Brilliant!. I have insisted on this with all the choirs I have directed. I don't have too much time for "lesser" conductors, but Gardiner is on my desert island discs list. (Along with Haitink and Harnoncourt.)

Is the tenor Anthony Rolfe-Johnson? Far from being" out classed" by the gals, as has been suggested, he knows how to sing this - albeit minor but hugely important harmonically - role in the soloist ensemble.

You can't compare her performance to the soprano - Barbara Bonney - they are singing two very different songs, and it is the conductor who decides loud, soft speed etc. that is why he is the conductor. There are no unnecessary parts!!
