Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 - 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

Mozart wrote three rondos for solo piano in the period 1786 - 1787, the K. 494 and K. 511 being the other two. All are late works, the tragically short-lived composer still only about 30 years old at the time of their composition. This D major effort challenges the K. 511 rondo in popularity, and both outpace the less-encountered K. 494, a work that is hardly neglected and captures its fair share of attention in recitals and on recordings. All three feature memorable themes and Mozart's typically skillful piano writing, this D major effort in particular offering an infectiously chipper and graceful melody, one, however, that the composer borrowed from Johann Christian Bach. The work opens with this jaunty, playful theme gracefully skipping across the keyboard in spirited writing that could only come from the pen of Mozart. After the second appearance of the melody, the composer begins transforming it, adding greater weight and muscle to its previously delicate frame. The melody appears in various colorful guises throughout and also periodically reappears in its original form, making this a fairly complex rondo form. This charming work typically has a duration of six minutes.

Seems easy, but so difficult to tackle. It´s a very fun piece to play, just don´t trust its apparent simplicity.

I can see why you'd think that. I've also seen resemblances to Eine Kleine Nachtmusik in 2 of his opera overtures, especially when all the pieces are arranged for piano solo. Those being The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, with the Don Giovanni one being perhaps a bit more obvious in the resemblance, both being resemblances to the first movement though. The Marriage of Figaro one is really only noticeable when you slow it down.

Finally! This is a great Interpretation. I practicing this. Me: *Tiffany* (Poon) *!* [I don't know why?] Though so titled, Mozart's Rondo in D major actually has nothing in common with the form. It is, in fact, a quite regularly structured sonata form. The principal melody is lively with a characteristic "Scottish snap" in its opening and third bar. Repeated again and given a more definitive close, the principal melody is followed by a short melodic figure bearing a strong resemblance to a passage in the first movement of Eine kleine Nachtmusik. The motif of this short passage then becomes the building block of the second theme. Concise and routed in the dominant minor key, the second theme, after only nine measures, gives way to a varied form of the principal melody in the dominant of A major. Shortly thereafter, a brief melodic idea closes the exposition in the dominant key. The development section, beginning with statement of the principal melody's first two bars in octaves, focuses entirely on the melodic material connected with that theme. After passing through the related keys of B minor and G major, the main theme returns in the tonic key of D major, thus beginning the recapitulation. The outline of the exposition is mainly followed in the course of the recapitulation with the exception that the brief second theme is omitted. In its place, instead, is a statement of the principal melody in the key of F major. The same melodic idea that closed the exposition closes the recapitulation (in the tonic key, of course) and a brief coda based on the first measures of the principal melody bring the piece to an end. This charming work was composed in 1786, while Mozart was working onThe Impresario and The Marriage of Figaro. The main rondo theme is based on a melody by J.C. Bach, Johann Sebastian's youngest son. This theme is heard in various keys and registers, but even when stated in the minor key, the mood is prevailingly sunny and optimistic. Despite the title (and the description by Mr. Cummings), this piece is actually written in a freely-composed monothematic sonata-form. Mozart's K.382 is another "rondo" that isn't in rondo form (it's a theme and variations).
