Hey everyone! In this video, I am going to show you how to make yarn wefts for doll wig projects!
Brushed yarn is such an amazing alternative if you don't have easy access to alpaca or other fibers. Its great for beginners too as its cheap and come in many colors! Hope you find this tutorial helpful!
My videos are now open for subtitle contributions! I'd be really thankful for your help! Check out this link ► www.youtube.com...

Instead of using a hair straightener, you can pour hot water over the wefts and then brush them again. This worked for me, anyway.

Tip - Thicker and bulkier yarn unravels much easier, and there's less effort needed to make it into usable doll hair floof. That's something i've noticed while trying out different yarns :3

For those without a straightener, or simply looking for silkier, smoother results; use fabric softener or conditioner mixed with boiling hot water! Let it soak for 5 minutes then hang it up to dry. After, brush it using a fine-toothed comb. Hope this helps!

1. You absolutely do not need that mesh thing, just tie it down the same way around basically anything: barbecue sticks, pencils, knitting needles etc, etc... 2. The length of the weft is limited to the length of the yarns fibers (yarns are made when spinning the ends of the fibers together, when you brush it you will break the fibers apart again as they're not really 'attached' to each other, other than being tightly spun). You can actually collect the fluff when you're done, just hold it down with a finger and brush that out and continually adding the new fluff of the brush to this new weft! With enough patience there will be basically no excess left. 3. Straightening is also possible in a thousand different ways, as many people have commented just pour hot water on them then brush again, you can iron them on a low setting, heck you can probably just rinse them in cold water, brush flat and then put something heavy on top like a stack of books and leave over night, get creative!

Yeah, I have been having that issue, too. * The bits that didn't come apart? Separate them from the brushed yarn and brush them on their own. That way, you aren't re-brushing and tearing the already straight-ish parts. * Don't try to get the whole thing fully brushed while it's attached to whatever you attached it to. Do what you can, clip it off, flip it around and do the "roots" that are still unbrushed. I don't foresee me being able to get nice, long fibres but trying these things seems to yield more potentially usable fibre.

My straightener doesn't have an actual temperature setting so I spent a whole night trying to find the sweet spot to straighten the wefts. On a scale of 1-20, its a 15. Also, the single row wire brushes don't work that well. I would go with the one she is actually using.

This tutorial is AMAZING. Currently trying it with a pastel colored yarn, and the results are coming along wonderfully. I'm trying to make some other wefts as well, but I'm having some issues with those. For some reason, whenever my strings are longer than the one I was using for the other ones, they end up practically shredding, knotting, and getting ripped apart. And this is being VERY gentle with them. They shrink to at least a third of their size. Any recommendations? :( I want to make a pretty long wig

iv been trying this for a couple of days and cant get them as straight and silky as yours :S i tried making them really long as well and all the wefts end up the same length 11cm
@fr0gie_714
@fr0gie_714 7 жыл бұрын
To make it silky straighten it,put conditioner in a bowl of hot water,use a wooden mixing stick to resolve it,dip your weft in but don't let the glue touch the water,hang it up to dry for two hours or more and comb it with a normal human comb. To make it longer,use 50cm long yarn .do this by cutting 1meter of cardboard and rapping 1meter if yarn Arlington and cutting one side to make 50cm hair.then once you fluff it it should be 30cm+

Just wanted to say *Thank You!* This worked out pretty well for me - Granted you can't make super duper long hair this way for your doll, its a great way to add hair on a budget. I manage to get my wefts about 4 to 5 inches using Acrylic Yarn via Micheal's Arts & Crafts however I don't use the "normal" type of Acrylic Yarn. I'm using Red Hearts "Unforgettable" brand, it looks like spun fiber in itself (almost looks like alpaca hair tbh but it's not and its shorter than Alpaca lol) ... I get good length out of it and it looks beautiful when finished. I guess the only drawback that sorta sucks is this particular type does not really offer a *solid* color (or my local Micheal's is just low on stock) since I am looking for a decent white or black color. That's so far the only major drawback I've encountered using this method. I do have actual Alpaca hair as well which I haven't worked with yet - But if I find a better yarn that yields longer fibers besides 4 to 5 inches I'll make sure to come back. Also don''t cut your yarn longer thinking it'll yield longer fibers, each fiber is a *set length* so you're just wasting yarn at some point. The type I use I can't just unravel it via my fingers since it's not like typical yarn.

Btw....this does work with a regular iron (the kind for ironing clothes) if you set it to the lowest setting and are very careful. My iron has the settings labeled with examples of which kind of fabric each setting is used for, and setting 1 says "acetate, acrylic".

No, you can't. It has to be at least 80% acrylic. Wool is not only more expensive, but when brushed out like this it will eventually felt, and heat destroys it. I make yarn tails for sale, you can not use wool for these kinds of fiber products.

Yes, acrylic is made with plastic that is melted into a very thin continuous strand that is then made into yarn, cotton and wool are small hairs that are twisted together to make a strand. I've seen a lot of people use higher end yarns because they think the hair will be better but it will end up extremely short, full plastic is the way to go!

Started trying this out tonight. It's not hard-hard, but you definitely make it look easier than it is. I had such trouble gluing the wefts down, the glue kept sticking and pulling out strands of hair. I also took your measurement and translated it into inches, but everything was so incredibly short by the end of it. I'm going to try it again very soon, this time doubling it to about a foot in length to see if I can make my doll hair longer.

I think you can also use a hot iron if you don't have a straightener. I've used it on many synthetic wigs and it worked out. Usually you'll go for the lowest temp setting, or if your hot iron is marked with fabric types use the setting for synthetic fibers.

So I’ve started, and the first problem I had was that my brush was old and the pins/bristles kept breaking or bending. So I went and got a hairbrush that has a lot of bristles, but that isn’t working as well as I’d hoped. I’m thinking I really do need to get a new dog brush to make these... however that is through no fault of the video, it’s my own. This video is amazing and I’m glad I saw it. I knew about this technique a while back, and tried it before but didn’t get very far (wrong kind of yarn, the project was just too big) but this I will stick to.

I would just like to make a note that this does work. I've never done it before, but today I bought a flat iron, a package of assorted combs, and the de-shedder brush, and sat down at my computer desk to listen to a video while I worked on this. I cut the lengths of yarn from a skein of Caron Simply Soft acrylic yarn that I already have at home. Since I didn't have the mesh, I just attached my yarn to an empty stitch saver that I use for knitting. I took the time to separate the yarn ply. Caron Simply Soft is a 4 ply yarn, very soft and slightly shiny. On top of a scratch piece of paper (as my working surface) I started combing with a plain rat tail comb, simply because I like having the handle. It's important to start at the bottom and work your way up. Make sure to keep a good strong hold on the mesh, or in my case the stitch holder, so it doesn't move around too much and waste time. Then when I had it looking right, I heated up my new flat iron and ironed the hair flat. It looks very pretty, soft and shiny. Now I just need to make about a million more in order to make a wig. Just kidding.
