Different HP designs expand differently, dia. of the cavity, depth and taper of the cavity all affect expansion, so those are the parameter that are set in stone with that particular bullet design. The only thing you have left is alloy and velocity to play with to find the expansion characteristics you are looking for. A HP expands by the amount of fluid and the force that fluid is applies to the cavity, i.e. the velocity, larger cavity HP's have thinner walls and will expand more rapidly while smaller HP cavity designs require more velocity to obtain the same expansion because it takes more fluid pressure to push out and expand the thicker walls. My 357 mag HP of choice is the Lyman 358156, I use an alloy of around 11 BHN for loads in the 1200 fps. a little softer for 9 mm and 45 ACP loads. Basically, it just comes down to finding the right combination of alloy and velocity with the HP bullet design you're working with to get the expansion you like.
@TinManReloading Жыл бұрын
That makes total sense. I think this alloy gave me around 11.5 BHN, but the cavity is deep and wide, so it wants to tear apart. If 10:1 doesn't hold up at 1250 fps, I might try the round HP pins to see what I can get. That Lyman bullet looks really nice. Thanks, 7sixtwo!

tbh for me, dogs and two legged critters are my biggest concern rn, punching threw a skull or dropping a big guy means more to me then a perfect mushroom
@TinManReloading Жыл бұрын
That is a good point. So, I guess what I'm after is high velocity and a .720" diameter bullet that stays together to make a big wound cavity. Idk if thats possible with cast, but I'm sure as hell gonna try 😂👍🇺🇸

tinman I have great luck with lower antimony alloys as long as tin is equal or higher percentage in the alloy. 1-1-98 works in my opinion better than 16:1 because it holds 100% weight retention at higher velocities and it expands all the way down to 800 fps. 2-2-96 is also great and holds 98% weight retention up to 1350 fps in HP molds. When water dropped after powder coat it gains 2 BHN and 357 rifle solids make great 65 cal mushrooms from 2000 fps down to 1500 fps with 100% weight retention. Don't be afraid of antimony alloys. Most wheel weights are 2.5-3%. Melt them in large batches and you will have a consistent product to alloy with. Same thing with your bullet alloy- make it in large batches before you cast. When you get a great load with 100% weight retention and good accuracy you will wish you cast 1500 of the same bullet on the same day rather than casting 150 and having to try to re-create a past alloy that worked well.

Any time you can double the diameter, and still have 100% weight, you’re on track. I haven’t been able to cast in over a year. Or do much shooting. Hopefully soon, though? 🤞

I was really pleased with this! I hope you can cast soon. How have you been, Jerry? Its been a while!

Be careful going with a very high % of tin. You can actually tin your mold with it too high. It will ruin the mold. Go to roto metals and buy some antimonial lead. Add it so your ally will have 0.5% to start and go up to 1.5% max.
