Nice train peachy. I didn’t here the classic sound of steam MPC era chuffing. I hope the circuit board inside the tender is ok. You probably already know. But just incase I will let you know. When you get one of these sound of steam trains. The first thing to do before you run it. Is open the tender and replace the foam underneath the circuit board if it hasn’t been already. The foam is old and is falling apart which lets the circuit board short out on the tender. Which blows out the the circuit board. 3M double sided tape is a great and professional looking replacement. I grew up during the MPC era and love MPC era train videos. Thanks for making this video.

I lived through the MPC era and have many vivid memories about it since I was about 12 years old when it happened and deeply involved in Lionel Trains. MPC started making the 6464 boxcars in many different road names that the Lionel Corporation had not. I built a collection of those one at a time. Later on, I bought a Chessie Steam Special set. It is a great set to this day.

My first train set was MPC era, I got it for my 10th birthday in 71 ran it so much we had to head to the local train shop and buy a post war steam engine to replace it. Dad and I had so much fun making a layout in the basement.

Hi Peachy, These are the exact trains I started out with. I starte d buying some trains in 1970 and in 1977 -1979 I bought both the Southern crescent and in 1979 the blue comet. MPC got me into trains when I discovered them in a kidde city toy store. I found a Lionel gp9 in N&W for $37.95 and then I was hooked. I was supposed to be shopping for the kids and I dId but it was a lot more interesting for me at that time.

Thanks for sharing this. I like your layout. I am an American Flyer S gauge guy, but I did buy a couple of the MPC AF diesels and several freight cars during my second phase of life with American Flyer. I think my son still has them. With the exception of my Royal Blue locomotive all of my current locomotives are black, but I have a plan to repaint one of them win the Southern green and yellow. That will add some welcome color to my layout.

Very cool Purchase peachy! You really have yourself a very clean set there. Those sound boards for mighty sound of steam can sometimes be not as reliable but they are very easy to fix by replacing the foam bedding and the capacitors on the sound board it self. Also from what I’m aware is that the southern railway was the one rail line that declined merging with Amtrak back in 1971

Hi Peachy. I am so familiar with This SOUTHERN RAILROAD Green steam train & tender. I happen to work in a Train store & see 2 in the display case. I'm also seen this logo on many past packaging from Lionel & General Mills nee Kenner Toys. I have a box car of one RAIL BOX that has the MPC you mentioned. I think that your sets are very nice. You truly impress me Peachy & like your work on your layout of O scale. 👍🛤️🛤️🛣️🏬🏠🏫⛲🏞️

Hi Peachy. Very nice presentation . These were all MPC cars or Fundimension Era, like you said, however, the next phase of Lionel was the Lionel Trains , Inc , or LTI owned by Richard Kughn,also known as The Richard Kughn Era , 1987-late 1995 , and he made another passenger car for an add on to your set. That was the Southern Crescent Diner car, 6-19001. I think you should have no problem locating one. Just giving you a little info for the complete set. Have fun and enjoy them. I have for years and years. Love you videos.🚂

Very nice. I only run conventional, since that is what I began with 60+ years ago when I started playing with my brother's trains. I brought up doing a conventional video at the York meet and greet and I'm glad that you did this nice presentation with this classic unit. I have the Santa Fe version of that locomotive, which is part of the Famous American Railroad series that MPC put out, along with yours and the Blue Comet. Dave at dagryffyn did a great run with all three sets. They are fun engines and the chuff isn't really that bad, considering. It is nice to see all the new stuff running on KZbin, but I'm an old fogey when it comes to running my trains and classic Lionel is my favorite. Great video. Keep them coming and I'll be waiting for the next one.

I'm a conventional runner myself. I've got all the current-production historically correct models I wanted so from now on it's post-wars, MPC, and LTI Era Lionels. My layout's small, the basic 4X8, so I don't need all the exotic features and have no interest in them. (Although I can't STAND "Mighty Sound of Steam!" I leave it disconnected and run an REA car with a whistle unit installed behind the tender.)

I was 14 years old when my father purchased the MPC Southern Crescent set. Of course the passenger cars were added for a few years as Lionel would introduce a new add-on car each year, such cars as the diner. The following year, he and my mother purchased the Blue Comet for me as a Christmas gift. Of course the following add-on cars were future Christmas and Birthday gifts. Thank you for your fresh enthusiasm for a train set that is approaching 50 years of age.

@wayneantoniazzi2706

That's putting it mildly. I've replaced obsolete sound systems with the now unavailable Williams whistle and bell units and one from ERR by 3d Rail. Others I leave the sound system unplugged and run a sound-equipped REA car behind the tender. I'll tell you, I prefer the old mechanical whistles to the primitive electronic sound units!

This is certainly one of the best looking MPC sets and the baby Madison cars are so cute. It’s interesting to me that MPC trains are becoming collectible. As a person who grew up with them it seems like we couldn’t dump them fast enough once MTH and LTI started making a wide variety of scaleish models with better sounds and electronics in the late 80s. We have sold most of our MPC over the years, keeping a few of the best pieces. I doubt they’ll ever run again though. All the same, now that we can look at these trains as vintage (I guess that makes me vintage too) MPC trains mark a distinct era in O gauge history. It was a time when O gauge was down and out and was revived by some very colorful trains.

Love the color scheme on those engines, I picked up the 2-8-2 Southern in that color scheme without the crescent at the last April York show and I love it. The train is a great runner, but I had to replace the foam under the sound board with foam tape so it wouldn't short out to the tender frame.

beautiful train set! I grew up during the MPC era of Lionel, kinda cringe when I hear the word "vintage" I have the passenger cars but am more into Marx so I painted two Marx E7s in Southern Crescent livery to pull mine. You mentioned there were six cars yet I only saw five in your consist? Wondered which one wasn't in the video? Thanks!

Ah Peachy, I might have known a good Southern woman like yourself was going to grab onto a Lionel "Southern Crescent" set one day! And so it's come to pass! Just a bit of history, the green color on Southern Railway passenger engines came about in the 1920's. The then-president of the SA, I believe his name was Fairfax Harrison, (There's a real Virginia name for you!) had made a trip to Britain and had seen British steam locomotives in various colors. He liked them all but was most impressed with the green ones. So on his return to the US Mr. Harrison put out the word, ALL Southern Railway passenger locomotives were going to be done in green instead of basic black. Southern's green eventually became known as "Virginia Green," Mr. Harrison being a good son of the Old Dominion! Nothing wrong with those MPC Era engines! They're basic post-wars; solid, rugged, and reliable. I've got one myself, the 6-8006 Atlantic Coast Line "Silver Shadow" from 1980 and it's a great runner and puller! And the great thing about MPC Era Lionels is most are VERY affordable as well, a great way to enter the hobby. A fun video Peachy! Thanks for posting! (And since you like the ACL keep your eyes peeled for a "Silver Shadow," they're out there!)
