The Best excursion I ever went on was one of the Reading and Northern RR Iron Horse Rambles excursions. It’s an amazing all day affair with 6 hours total of ride time (3 hours out from reading PA to the historic town of Jim Thorpe, and 3 hours back with a 3 hour layover in Jim Thorpe to explore the town and etc), pulled by amazing mainline steam. The star of the show there is the Reading T1 class 4-8-4 number 2102, and let me tell you, it is amazing to witness. I rode in one of the cheap seats in the old Erie commuter cars with the windows that can be opened, and getting blasted in the face with coal soot with my head out the window was absolutely amazing. Track speed behind a big 4-8-4 is awesome.

I like Train Travel. My wife and I have taken the Amtrak Auto Train to Florida many times. It is really cool , they put your car on the train in Lorton Virginia and you get off in Sanford Florida which is near Daytona and Orlando. The food on the train is exceptional. We love the Auto Train

Thanks for sharing this. I have ridden passenger trains in Scotland, and the U.S. from Indiana to the West coast when passenger trains were common modes of transportation. More recently, I have ridden several excursion trains, including some pulled by steam locomotives. I highly recommend train travel when possible. I also was hired about 40 years ago to photograph one of Henry Flagler's personal observation coaches, and spent four four hours in the car documenting every detail. It was somewhat like the car you showed her, but even more luxurious, except in the crew accommodations. It didn't have a microwave oven.

We'd love to see you post a video compilation on your hours with that train car. We'd help if you have questions or need any help. Gary

Looks like the trip was a good time for all. The look at the private car was a high point for sure. I've also come to appreciate the orange Genesee and Wyoming diesels since more and more of them are showing up on our local shortline, the Huron and Eastern. We have ridden a couple of excursions in Michigan's "thumb" area on the Huron and Eastern (behind a GP38-2 in the old red, white and blue RailAmerica scheme). For one of them, we drove 45 min. to board just to ride the train to our home town, taking advantage of the layover to walk up the street and have lunch at home. We also rode an excursion on Lake State Railway (ex Detroit and Mackinac) behind one of their ALCO C425"s.from Bay City, MI to West branch and return. Another, and really the highlight, was a trip behind Pere Marquette 1225, which included watching someone in Ithaca, MI who had left laundry on the line receive a rather sooty reminder of what the steam era was really like. (Bet they didn't do that again.) Although 1225 has pulled many excursions, we have enjoyed chasing rather than riding them and have compiled a nice collection of photos and video. I apologize for the long winded comment, but the memories are good ones.

Have you noticed? Wherever those Genesee & Wyoming family of diesels are they're kept spotlessly clean. VERY impressive! And I'm sure that self pride gets them a lot of business.

That looked like a fun ride! Thanks for bringing us along! We've ridden a number of excursions but it's been a while since the last one. We've done the old Norfolk-Southern Steam Program excusions behind Class A 1218 and Class J 611, which the wife called "MY engine!" Also we rode behind Ross Rowland's C&O Northern #614 on the NJ Transit-affiliated excrsions in the 1990s. Also in the 90's we rode behind Susquehanna's Mikado 142 from the Hackensack Meadowland to the NJ Skylands. A superb run was on the Durango & Silverton between the namesake towns in 2000. Take my advice should you ever ride on the D&S spend the extra money and ride the parlor/observation car, it's worth it! A great ride with a cash bar (Woo-hoo!) but at the start of the trip the "breakfast mimosas" were free! (Double woo-hoo!) AND that parlor car is a part of railfan history. The pioneering railfan photographer and writer Lucius Beebe rode that car and second parlor on a chartered excursion of the Colorado narrow-gauge railroads back around 1950 in the company of other railwriters and rail executives. We've also made th Strasburg pilgimage but it's been a while. I'd REALLY like to get up to Pennsylvania for a ride on the Reading & Northern, their Reading T-1 #2102 looks incredible! Oh, before I forget, you're very photogenic, you know that? You look great beside that train! And it looked to be a long one too! Thanks for posting!

Excellent video. I always enjoy excursion and tourist trains, since they are a step back in time. I've ridden a number of them, including the Arkansas And Missouri, New Hope & Ivyland, Adrian And Blissfield and the Toledo, Lake Erie And Western. Chris, at RBP, would really love that Texas Special car. Once again, a fine video, as always.

Strasberg Railroad is a nice train ride. It is short but so much to do & see around the area. The PRR museum is great and the toy train museum is awesome also. There is even a Caboose motel if you would like to stay overnight and sleep in a caboose.

You really need two days to get the best out of Strasburg, in addition to the Strasburg RR there's the incredible Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, the Train Collectors Association Museum ( Trust me folks, it's like Christmas morning gone berserk in there!) and the not-to-be missed Choo-Choo Barn! Lots of other things to see and do in that part of PA!

Thank you for the enjoyable video and pictures of your excursion! In the area I live we have the Cuyahoga Valley that has a short train ride from Cleveland to Akron but if you combine with either a bicycle ride or a kayak trip it makes a fun trip! You can take your bike and or kayak on the train so one way is the train ride and the other by bike, kayak or car. Thank you again

Fantastic. I havent gone on a train ride in years! Most of the ones around here are pretty short. I have been able to ride in a steam engine once. I'd pay extra to do that again! Looks like you had a great trip.
