Width is not necessary historically speaking. In fact some think stereo is an unnecessary gimmick. The great producers (and some masters today) who mixed all these great albums from the fifties and sixties worked in mono and concentrated wholeheartedly on depth. Thus we get the term: “Deep mix”.

Thanks, Marrcello! The thing I noticed right away after you made it stereo again is the open hat. To my ears it had way to much reverb from the send channel, but it's purely a matter of taste.

This is a helpful walkthrough of the mixing process on the MPC, thanks for taking the time to do it! I was a little surprised that you wouldn't use any sidechaining between the kick and the bass - that's my go to method for carving out the necessary space for the kick. I need to try your approach to put the kick and bass on a shared mix bus with a compressor to see how that sounds in comparison. Another thing to note is that a lot of inserts across pads, programs, submixes and master seems to be what really brings the MPC down to a crawl. Since you're adding eq on basically every pad, you might want to consider downsampling the pads to free up cpu. For a simple beat like in this tutorial, it makes no difference of course, but on a full fledged song, it would probably help. I found is surprising that you would add eq on the master when determining that the mix lacked some bass. Why not just add the extra bass on the actual bass/kick submix instead? The tip to mix in mono using the Stereo Width plugin was helpful. I'll give that a try.

great video! I am struggling with from which side to take that MPC, when it comes to EQ. That thing can have so many tracks, it can become very quick confusing and not sounding anymore due to over-cooking. Now you gave very precious hints on EQ/Comp and also some new ideas how to organize. I will try to setup my tracks: 1 to 4 are lows (kicks-basses), 5-8 percs, 9-12 chords, 13-16 leads. Each "layer" (meaning horizontal) going to a different submix. SO if I am adding some new tracks (which is exactly that easy thing to do on MPC but that gives that mess), it goes almost directly to the corresponding sub. I think that could be a nice workflow.. thanks for your video!!

Either a tascam model 12/16/24 or a behringer 1820 with ada8200 adat expansion and a mixer like fx16ii (direct outs after the mixer to each separate track, if you have a double set of those behringers you can have 16 outs into your daw. I got 1 1820 and a 8200 for 300 second hand, and that is the best soundcard in 20 years of producing for me, if i heard myself saying that 10 years ago i would say i was nuts but it really is a stable, low latency good converters soundcard) that would be the easiest way to mix on the mpc. Use a real mixer for mixing, and get that analog sound into it would be the ideal solution imo. Not saying it can't be done in the mpc standalone but for some time is of the essence.

Hi. Found this Video very helpful to me cause i m triing to find the best and easiest way to arrange songs with variations and e.g. snare fills, so not too static just with the same sequences. so i saw your single programs does usually not contain a complete drumkit right? e.g. Program 1 contains just Kick Drums, Program 2 just Snares and so on. (just dumb you can not creat a drumpattern with only one program?). But you can mute the Programs via the track mix/mutes later easier for the arrangement. But you still need to do copys of the sequences, right? So at the end a complete song would contain e.g. 50 sequences if you wanna have a couple of fill variations inside verse bars and hook bars. Means a 8 Bar Verse would be made of 8 different 1 bar "Miniverses". so 8 x Miniverse Variations of each 1 bar = Complete Verse Nr 1 which is 8 bars long.
