New Dragy 2.0(DRG70) vs Old DRG69

There is a new version of the Dragy device out now. It is called the Dragy 2.0 or the DRG70. At first glance this may seem like a minor update. However, the new version of the GPS device is much more precise than the previous version.
I tested the previous version DRG69 vs. the new DRG70 version on the same runs yesterday. I didn’t have any issues with low satellites like people have had in the past. However, none of my Dragy devices have ever had that problem so it hasn’t ever been an issue for me.
In every single run I did the new version measured within 3 hundredths of a second of the previous model. However, the most interesting thing is that in every single run the new Dragy measured the same time or a faster time than the old version did.
Now we are only talking about a few hundredths of a second, but it never registered a slower time with the new version. Also, the graph of acceleration was always a smoother line. These two things are an indication that the newer version is more precise and even possibly more accurate.
The biggest difference between the two devices is that the slope varied a lot between most of the measurements that were captured. Sometimes the slope was lower with the new device but it was also higher in some cases too. I won’t know which one is more accurate until I can test it on a track that has been measured for decline. My hope is that the new version will produce far fewer invalid runs at the track.
The Dragy is still the single best way to measure acceleration if you don’t have a timed track to test at. Even at the track the Dragy offers a great backup option to the track’s timing system. In addition the Dragy app is a great way to compare your times with other cars around the world.
While the new version was within a few hundredths of a second of the old version I would still recommend getting the new version if you are going for records or if a few hundredths of a second would matter to you. In my testing I never saw the new Dragy 2.0 measure a slower time than the old one. I have had plenty of instances where 1 hundredth of a second would have made all the difference in my placement on the Dragy leaderboard.

I should have clarified that I tested both devices simultaneously using two phones. That gives you an absolute direct comparison between the two devices.

I was going to ask how you did that. I thought you needed to plug into the OBD2 that would of made it hard to do both. lol . But its just GPS and bluetooth.

@@tommyarmour68 plugging into the OBD2 port isn’t necessary because side that would be incredibly inaccurate. GPS is incredibly accurate for horizontal motion. For elevation gps isn’t accurate though.

Amazon is selling the DRG69 for $99. brand new. While the DRG70 is $159. Used to be you could get the refurbished 69 for 100 bucks. . Of course its always nice to get the newest and best. But if your just a weekend warrior the 69 is good enough. Thanks for the comparison.

You can still use the older Dragy devices as long as the battery still works. The battery can be replaced but it isn’t trivial to do.

the new version has much more battery life and its more accurate! the old one has 2,5m (meter) accurate and the new one 1,5m... but if you have the old one, i think stay with it!

Appreciate the testing and info. But I wonder how accurate the new one is vs the old one. Just because it's giving us a better time, that doesn't automatically make it a better unit. I honestly can't see anyone with an old one getting a new one. It'll just be a reason they can charge more for a device that does the same thing.

True just because it is faster doesn’t mean it is more accurate. However, Dragy is claiming that this new device has new functionality that offers better accuracy using multiple GPS satellites. The results of all of my tests were extremely close and the new version was never reading a slower value. The additional accuracy could definitely come from the updated hardware. To most people a couple of hundredths of second won’t matter. For those people if they already have a Dragy the upgrade won’t be worth it. However, for people chasing records the new device absolutely could make all the difference. I am especially interested in seeing if the slope is accurate with the new device. Once our track reopens I can verify which one is more accurate.

That is a common issue. Usually it is a battery issue. You can replace the battery or get the new one. I recommend getting the new one.
