Warblerab 295 It was to make a point more than anything. The prorogation of Parliament couldn’t take place until Bercow went to the House of Lords to make it official. They were right to put up a fight, what the government has been trying to do is a disgrace to democracy. The Conservative party has been hijacked by a group of far-right populists. The Tories used to be the party of law and order, now they are the party of chaos and disorder.

The speaker gets an additional salary on top for their work as a speaker of the house. Yet to become in such a position isn't a day's walk. It is years of parlimentary accorymn and orders.

It was the prorogation of Parliament where the parliamentary session was (unlawfully) suspended. The speaker was summoned to go to the Lords Chamber to listen to the announcement by the Queen. By trying to stop him from standing I think they were trying to make the point that it shouldn't be done.
