MQ-25 Program Update with Boeing at Sea Air Space 2024

Troy Rutherford, VP / Program Manager, shares the latest with the Boeing MQ-25 program at Sea Air Space 2024.
The US Navy awarded Boeing a contract to fund two MQ-25 Stingray test aircraft at the end of March 2024. At-sea test aboard an aircraft carrier are expect for 2025 and 2026 right before expected initial operational capability (IOC) in 2026.
The MQ-25 Stingray will be the world’s first operational, carrier-based unmanned aircraft and provide aerial refueling and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities that enhance capability and versatility for the Carrier Air Wing (CVW) and Carrier Strike Group (CSG). Integration of a persistent, sea-based tanker into the CVW will make better use of our combat strike fighters and extend the range of our aircraft carriers. The system will be a critical part of the future CVW and is central to the Navy’s strategic Unmanned Campaign Framework, laying the foundation for all future carrier-based unmanned systems and pioneering the cutting-edge manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) operational concept. The Navy plans for all NIMITZ and FORD-class carriers to eventually be MQ-25 capable.
At Sea Air Space 2024, Boeing unveiled an MQ-25 scale model fitted with two LRASM anti-ship missiles. This shows future growth potential for the unmanned aircraft.

Different use cases though, regular tankers can not take off aircraft carriers

With all due respect, the MQ-25 is another example of a program that was designed very poorly by the Navy. It wasn't required to have a big enough fuel load to refuel the f-35, only the F/A-18 super hornet

The MQ-25's fuel capacity is almost exactly that of the F-35, but unless something has gone terribly wrong, planes aren't running on fumes when they refuel. The Stingray is capable of topping off four to six F-35s or F-18s at a range of 520 miles from the carrier.
