This video discusses Virginia Woolf's Essay Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown published in 1924 which explores modernity. Woolf discusses an anonymous woman whom she observed on a train carriage journeying through London, she names her as 'Mrs. Brown'. She examines the various literary methods that could be employed to capture Mrs. Brown's character and the world she inhabits. This essay is a key element of twentieth-century literature in general. Woolf in this essay develops her argument through the examination of two generations of writers. This essay is a reply to Mr. Arnold Bennett's work "Is the Novel Decaying?". This essay is a lecture by Woolf given to the HERETICS CLUB AT gIRTON COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE in 1924. According to her, Mr. Bennett is a critic of not just for her, but modern writers in general. In particular, Mr. Bennett's character challenges modern writers' depiction of "reality".
This essay sheds light on a challenge:
"Mr. Bennett says that it is only if the characters are real that the novel has any chance of surviving. Otherwise, die it must. But, I ask myself, what is reality? And who are the judges of reality?"
