Papa supervises him until schooling and Arun is sent to Massachusetts, America. As an immigrant, Arun tries to find his own place in America. Similarly, Uma's isolation is compared to Melaine the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patton. Melaine's parents fail to pay attention to her eating disorder bulimic. Mr. Patton never cares for the family. The novel revolves around the themes of deprivation, abundance, and being trapped in society's claims. It also deals with male and female roles in two completely different cultures, Indian and American cultures. The title of the novel Fasting, Feasting reciprocates the difference between two different cultures.
