Reason Saves Cleveland with Drew Carey, a Reason.tv original documentary series that proposes viable solutions to some of Cleveland's biggest problems, premiered in March 2010. The release made the front page (twice) of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and ruffled the feathers of at least one local writer.
The film also caught the attention of the Cleveland City Council, who invited Drew and Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie to Cleveland to discuss the ideas raised in the documentary.
This short video is a collection of highlights from Drew and Nick's 2.5 hour conversation with the Cleveland City Council on May 27.
Approximately 10 minutes. Produced, shot and edited by Paul Feine and Alex Manning.

As a Clevelander I can tell you this; the biggest problem facing this city is the criminals and politicians and you can rarely tell the difference between the two.

I am so glad Nick broke it down to them without any sort of sugar coating. Drew's celebrity and Reasons sound idea's together is a great force for good.

Drew Carey is schmoozing them. He's trying really hard not to let any doors close. This is good. Well done Drew. You might not have got any oh-my-god-I've-been-wrong-for-decades moments right then. But lots of people will watch this and think.

Lmao! I live in Collinwood and Drew is welcome here in that jacket. Good points made and it's easy to be a critic of Cleveland, but all in all its a great city. Been here for a couple years and it's suffering but on the right track.

Trash and roads should be private. Government is a legal monopoly on the use of force. In other words, they are the cops. And they should not be anything else.

I used to work trying to get signs approved all over the country. Flint, MI was the only place without any regulations. I called the town zoning office and lady told me they don't have any rules. Who cares how big a sign is or the colors? The permits are very expensive and sometimes really strict. Sometimes the bureaucrats tell approve the sign verbally, and then reject it later. And btw, my town doesn't take our garbage, it is done privately, and there is no problem.

The politicians see that their city has problems, but they want businessmen to just deal with it and bring wealth to their city anyway. This is evident in the chairman's ridiculous comment about Carey bringing the Wheel of Fortune to Cleveland, which came following the discussion about exactly why businesses do not come to the city. The politicians see relinquishing their power as out of the question, so they are blindly hoping that businesses selflessly come to their city's rescue.

Kudos for getting an audience with the Cleveland royalty, but I'm skeptical it will affect real change. My only suggestion: Keep at it. Appeal to the citizens, not their keepers.

Polensek's comment at 0:05 sums up everything that is wrong with every single person sitting on the right side of that table. Animosity toward privatization. Every statement that followed was some derivation of what Polensek crystallized in 2 seconds--We're happy to loot the spoils of any business that might come here, but we won't get the hell out of the way and allow the city itself to rise.

The City Council members seemed, to me, in a different zone. Here in Cleveland, we need a new slate of Council Members. New ideas. YOUNGER and INNOVATIVE ideas. Are these guys more afraid of losing their Council seat, than willing to try and look outside the box and take a chance? I've lived here my whole life and I am so dismayed with the stagnation in the City and the City Government.

5:30 This entire segment on regulations for a sign (in this case the regulations that could govern the sign for a car wash) are quite frankly absurd and just another reason the city of Cleveland is suffocating small businesses.

Except for the one black council member who seemed to understand why two moths for a sign is ridiculous, the rest of them don't seem to get it all, especially Mr. Snappy Dresser. Clevel and remains a doomed wasteland.

Through the whole thing I wanted Drew and Nick to play a good cop (Drew) bad cop (Nick) role. City council likes that they have the power, and the fact is all of the things positive about Cleveland that the councilmen said, are supported by them. Not by the marketed culture that desires them there. City Council in Cleveland still does not get it. GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!

That chairman or whatever he is, sitting at the far end of the table, looks and acts like a thug. It really is amazing that these are the types who rule over everyone and impose strict limits on production. It's like the people who would be unsuccessful in business are the people who are successful in politics.

I don't hate the message, although it appears to me Drew Carey doesn't know how to argue the laissez faire / free market position with any great competence and perhaps a new celebrity reason tv spokesperson can be attempted? Please? Emma Caulfield maybe? I think we can all agree that god damn Drew Carey is a talentless hack, he's never been funny or likable. Also...
