As a cook island maori, I must say that out of all of us polynesian's, the samoan's would have to be the most modernised in music making. Not only in tradition, but they also mingle in with other cultural musicians mixing in a spice of multicultural flavour within their music. And a very nice song. I'm very intrigued and impressed!

For those who don’t understand Samoan, I hope the simple translation above might help you understand the meaning of this amazing song. As I was listening to it, I realized that the writers of the song touched a raw-nerve so to speak. Suffice it to say that the cultural context from which this song was written, addresses the issue of the “faiava” or the “son-in-law’ who lives with and serves his wife’s family, As is often the case, these men are sometimes treated as servants (in the song he calls himself a “slave”) of the wife’s family. If the wife’s father is a chief in her village, and her family is quite prominent, the role of the “faiava” becomes even more difficult, particularly if he is from a less prominent family of another village. So this song deals with this issue. In a way, I would call it, “The Lamentations of The Son-In-Law!” Hahaha... to all the “faiavas” out there, cheers man! Somebody finally hears your cry.
@MusMasi4 жыл бұрын
I remember one laughing samoans show I went to, Tofiga said there is a samoan word for son in law, Faiava, it also means .......slave :)
@MusMasi4 жыл бұрын
It can really suck though, even if its a nice girl and all her friends and most of her family, like 90% approve of you, just one or two siblings out of 5 or 6 can make it almost impossible for you, especially if they are brothers, older brothers and she is not ready to stand up to them. the scenes in the video and the words and emotion are really bringing back memories for me hahaha.
