The subtle hinting in the commercials that Mr. D is a ticking time bomb who's about to explode is so brilliant. The way he calmly explains the increasingly terrible state of his life, from depression, to insecurity, to feeling shunned by everyone around him, even spiraling all the way into full-on fatalism at times. I really wish these commercials had continued. I can only imagine where the bit would've ended up going.

It really was. It’s just sad how those commercials were the reason they almost went out of business because of the ads to most places today are so bland and boring. This one was actually pretty funny.

The irony is, these ads are absolutely genius. They’re just way ahead of their time. If you saw this today, there’d be memes everywhere.
@MDetector53 жыл бұрын
It's interesting that they're trying really hard to put Mr. D over. Obviously it didn't take, as a few months after launching this mascot and ad campaign, Rax filed for bankruptcy. A couple of changes of ownership and a large scale downsizing later, Rax is largely regional with at least 5 locations (mostly in Ohio), and is nowadays owned by From Rax to Rich's, which took over first as a franchisee in 2002, and later bought the entire Rax operation in 2007. Mr. D could work nowadays, but in 1992, when this was first launched, we just weren't ready.

I think Mr. Delicious is the result of bored marketing executives who probably should have left Rax for something more creative instead of staying and trying to make their work at Rax more interesting. It reminds me of these programmers who get really bored with the standard way to do things and then keep looking for new programming languages and tools to conquer their boredom. The truth is, Rax would have been totally fine if they could have just stuck to Roast Beef. Look at their competitors. All they have to say is "we have the meats," and it's a perfect fit for their audience. This is why founders get pushed out of their own companies too. They might not even realize that their boredom can kill the enterprise, and then it's too late. Instead of just selling roast beef, we're casually alluding to vasectomies.
