Hi Bert, have you ever tried the Denon AHD 9200? I am curious how they stack against the Sony MDR Z1R. Another pair comparison Im curious about would be the Beyerdynamic T5P 2nd Gen vs Sony MDR Z7M2. I currently only own a T5P 2nd Gen
@bertreviews
@bertreviews 5 жыл бұрын
I haven’t heard the 9200 yet but am curious, and I hope to eventually own a T5P second gen; I’ve heard it and I like it. I will be doing a closed-back comparison video next, where I’ll have several high end headphones to demo, so you can hear how they sound against each other. Some older closed backs will be included in the test too, because some of them just sound so darn good.

Thanks very much! I’m a bit of an oddball in the headphone community because I own so many, and I can appreciate each for what they offer. Of the ones I own, I love the ZMF Eikon, Z1R as an comfortable all-rounder when I just want to relax after work, TH900 when I want the best bass, AH-D7000 when I want the Denon flavor without the TH900’s treble zing, and the amazing Sennheiser HD 250 (Mark I and II) which still competes with today’s headphones and does all music genres well. For video editing (not really for listening) I like the Sony 7506.

@@bertreviews I guess thats the reason why audio enthusiasts have so many headphones. Its hard to have 1 favorite. I mean, I only have the T5p 2nd gen for the upscale closed headphone. Im not sure where my go-to would compare to the average audiophile but I currently use my AKG Q701 to listen to headphone comparisons since I feel like they are the flatest sounding headphone. Im gonna give the HD250s a try if you consider them all arounders. I only wanted the Denon AHD 9200 since I liked the idea of the headphone being handcrafted in Japan. It gives off this exotic feel, just like the Beyers from Germany and my AKGs from Austria. But I guess the part that should always be a priority is the sound. Comfort I can compromise due to being used to my Grado RS2i for so long. The foam pads kill my ears. Haha

Really like you're review Bert...this one no exception. And that Metal571 'intro' LOL... the outro though nearly killed me... LOL Notice Santa wasn't playing with the more fragile E-MU...smart man! LOL If you ever are looking for a specific headphone to review I'm sure quite a few of us viewers would not mind lending them if you let us know. Keep up the great work you do... in all honesty you are my favorite headphone reviewer. Oh, my favorite in the comparison would be the E-MU's... (I'm biodyna biased for dynamics) second favorite is the HD6XX's. FYI, was listening on my Porta Pro Xs with Yaxi pads, because that's what I use on my tablet. Agree 100% if only it had killer extension and oomph down low :'( (and HD 800 stage/imaging and HD 800 ergonomics and HD 800 resolution and... well there is no perfect headphone the HD 800 has low bass quantity and a treble peak they're all compromises but one can dream)
@metal571
@metal571 5 жыл бұрын
@@woopygoman yeah I still don't understand why the HD 800 didn't follow the 600/650's signature, considering the immense resources Sennheiser has and their previous experiments that led to them discovering something "like" Harman way before it was a thing. You can also now see why I upgraded to the LCD-2C, which improves on the bass extension of 650 and soundstage but with the same (well, actually even moreso) subdued and relaxed treble.

The Teak sound demo is a bit weird. It seems it's not the stock pads that were installed on this one in the video. But some kind of Lawton pads. Sounds a bit brighter than with stock pads. I own a pair of CD1700 and they sound as good as what can be heard in this video. Very balanced, a bit bass-light, slighty warm (warmer than most vintage Sony headphones). Impressive for 1996.

oh wow now it makes me wonder how it originally sounds with the stock pads, since i found the bass too inadequate at the amount of highs that goes with and skipped purchasing the teak after watching this demo, thinking that the high will limit me from increasing volume to hear bass amount i like.

LOL thanks for the shout. The really weird thing is I thought about making an intro just like that with a simple metal guitar riff for a couple seconds at the beginning of each video, but never got around to it. fun comparison. The Z7m2 is the most pleasant sounding for sure, it's just the richer, more detailed sound. and it better be for that price. the sennheiser is just way too flat for taste but rich in details. the emu is a less richer version of the HD6xx. The other sony just lacks in details, and the Tazcam shouldn't even be in this discussion lol

What are your impressions on the Sony Z7m2?
@bertreviews
@bertreviews 6 жыл бұрын
Sony has put a lot of tech into their recent headphones which I find interesting. To my ears, the bass is very big but a little boomy (you can hear that in this video), and the treble can be a little hot. Soundstage is not bad but imaging is a little vague. A little over priced at this time for the sound quality, but the fit and finish, build, comfort & ergonomics are outstanding. I'm not sure they will be an everyday "go-to" headphone for most, but they do well with certain genres. I suspect they will get mixed reviews, some will like them, others not as much. I always say though, that ultimately, sound preference is a personal choice so for those who love them, that's great. Thanks for watching!

The TH-02 are Studio Monitor headphones, which are just for mixing music as opposed to listening to it. The responses are flat so as to get a congruent mix across devices. That's why they have an "interesting" sound. For mixing only.
@bertreviews
@bertreviews 3 жыл бұрын
Yes of course, but what I meant was - they sound cheap. But that was on purpose, I included cheap headphones so that people could hear the difference. I did the same in the first listening test video as well. You bring up a fascinating point though. Interestingly, plenty of people use and have used monitor headphones for music listening. Some people just like a flatter response. For example many reviewers have discussed the ATH-M50x & ATH-M40 here on KZbin strictly from a listening perspective. I remember this being true as far back as the 80s. For example, back then, the Sony MDR CD-6 technically a small monitor on-ear headphone, was (and still is) sought after by Sony collectors for its sound. Thanks so much for your comment.

Great high quality channel. I noticed that none of the headphones sounded overly bright, sibilant or harsh. Yet people say some of them are. Is it because of the recording gear? The music you used? I would like to hear them play acoustic music. Not just that electronic dance stuff. P.s. i intended to write this on the review with fostex th900, beyerdynamic t1...
@bertreviews
@bertreviews 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! One thing I am noticing is that different people like different sounding headphones, as the feedback I'm getting has been very varied. It's also possible that people have different levels of tolerance for sibilance for example. Some really don't like it, while others comment that they don't mind it at all. There are many possible reasons for this. I think the recording gear in my tests is good, the binaural mic is very high end and to me, represents the sound accurately. Of course what is heard on KZbin is also affected by the listening equipment (headphones especially) being used by the listener watching the video. Thanks for your suggestion to use different types of music, I will try to find a royalty-free acoustic track, and will possibly make an acoustic version of the testing videos, especially if there is a lot of demand for it. Many thanks!

the tascam DEFINITELY do sound like they are 15 bucks.. personally i dunno if its worth buying though... its way too tinny and flat.. little bass extension and the trebel feels a bit too flat.. basically id recommend saving up more money for something else like a koss portapro or cheaper studio monitors like the 7506 or AKG line but then again none of them really passed my warmth test on the bass or vibrancy... even though my main use headphones are similar sennheiser 56x (aka 660s)

Thanks for your thoughts on these. I agree, the Tascams are extreme low end. They could maybe work as a child’s headphone, as kids aren’t usually interested in fidelity and the Tascams are reasonably durable - but even if they break, well, it’s only 15 bucks. I included the Tascam just a an extreme point of comparison for the other headphones. Appreciate and enjoy reading your comments!

how is it that nobody seems to have issues with the hd 600+ series having no sub bass since they all roll off drastically below 100 hertz? i know they are ez for long duration listening but still, does it qualify as reference grade if it doesnt do sub-bass? or is it because with the sub bass done well u have to redo the mids and high all over again now that sub bass is added to the tuning and is it that somethings got to give or it will be a muddy mess if we have excellence in all 3 departments of low mid high? also, im no headphone expert but the mdr-cd1700 seems to be born in a time that emphasized crazy highs over lows but happen to be that near perfect tuning model that does all 3 areas of lows mids highs really well, but if u listen critically it doesnt really do bass well enough or that the wonderful forward vocals and highs are concealing the bass quite a bit from being a nice and adequate enough bass. having said this, i still think the mdr-cd1700 is better than hd650 :O, beating the supposed best all rounder headphone? wish i could get a new pair of them. also what if the sony mdr-r10 made a comeback? lol
@bertreviews
@bertreviews 5 жыл бұрын
These are really very excellent points, thanks for your comment. I’ve been in the hobby since the early 90s, and it’s only in the last 10 years or so that sub-bass has really become an essential, even expected component of higher end headphones. It’s not that people didn’t like sub-bass before that, because they did (I had a massive subwoofer in my ‘92 Honda Civic. Aw yeah!). It’s just that people didn’t expect great sub-bass from headphones. Speakers, yes, but not from headphones. I’m not sure if it was a technological limitation of earlier headphones or the fact that high end headphone listeners back then didn’t really listen to music with heavy bass, but nobody really expected headphones to be akin to speakers in the bass department. For example, if you look at advertisements for high end headphones from the 90s, they talk a lot about listening to classical music! (Which doesn’t need sub-bass). You’d never see advertisements like that today. The HD650 was released in 2003, before sub-bass became an expectation in headphones. Heck, the HD800 was released in 2009 and it is definitely not great with bass in general. So it’s really been in the last 10-15 years that things have changed, and sub-bass is now a bigger part of today’s modern music than it was in the past. People expect sub-bass now in headphones; this was most definitely not the case before. We’ve seen this with headphone revisions, for example the T1 and HD800 were revised to produce more and better bass (hence the HD800S). The iconic R10 have the best, smoothest and realistic midrange I’ve ever heard, but I think people today would be disappointed by the bass roll-off in those headphones and wouldn’t be happy with their level of bass reproduction with modern dance, hip-hop, or pop music. But for listening to say, the Beatles, the R10 is just surreal.

I'm not an expert, but I'd say that if you're really into bass, then the MDR-Z7M2 is for you. Otherwise, I'd say that the Sennheiser is more balanced overall. The E-MU Teak... I don't know, it just sounds dull to me. Personally, I'd pick the Sennheiser any day. P.S. I've been listening to this test with the Koss Porta Pro :P

LOL! I like to add a cheaper headphone in the mix in these tests, so people can really hear the difference that higher end headphones make to the listening experience. There are still many non-audiophiles out there who don't get this hobby and tell me they "can't hear the difference!"

The Tascams are pretty terrible indeed. The only thing they have going for them is decent bass and low mids, the rest of the spectrum is crap. For the same money or less, a Koss KSC75 or Sporta Pro destroy the Tascams in sound quality, or if you want a closed back over the ear, the Sennheiser HD206 also destroy them for a similar price.

To my ears, the E-MU Teak are classic "old people" headphones who hate bass. Typical "audiophile" garbage you see all over the place. One thing I HATE about "audiophiles" are their love for crappy headphones with piss poor bass response. And when you get NEUTRAL headphones, they cry "too much bass" when in reality, its just right. Clearly they never heard sony's EXTRA-bass lineup. Those things are so bassy that the mids and highs suffer. The z7m2 sound decent to me. And sound better than my sony 1am2.... good bass, good mids, good highs. but obviously the highs aren't as bright as others nor as awesome as the z1r. The Tascam TH-02 sounds like CRAP. Super tinny and flat with zero bass. Just hell no for those. 19.99, you can get better sounding cheap end headphones, like KOSS brand.... During the 6xx you mention, how "sound should sound" except that isn't entirely true. Because if you compared the 6xx to the Sennheiser HD800s Reference, you would squirt. Granted, there is a price difference. But the "reference" part of the upper end HD800s makes sure you get TRUE NEUTRAL response. Flat EQ or "as flat as possible". These sound like the typical sennheisers.... which I've grown out of. CD1700 are pretty clean sounding. Lacking that bass though.... but the mids and highs are pretty damn good. I bet those were cheap back when too. But those too, are "reference" headphones, meaning they are meant to be as neutral as possible.

Interesting comparisons, but your test audio is unnatural, synthesized, and frankly, horrible. How can we tell what sounds better when it all sounds bad? You should use a recording of real, non-amplified acoustic instruments and/or vocals. We should know how a piano, saxophone, human voice, or violin should sound. This would make it easier to judge the headphones.
@bertreviews

Thank you Robert for your comment, I appreciate it. It’s electronic dance music, and I can understand that not everyone likes that genre. In future individual (single) headphone reviews, I plan to use several different genres, including acoustic music, for a more complete perspective on a headphone’s range of musical reproduction. KZbin is extremely strict on using copy written tracks, so I have to find music of different genres that are both high quality recordings and copyright-free. It’s proving a little difficult, but I’m working on it. P.S. You play soprano, alto _and_ tenor sax? Wow!
