"Do you still have the pain?" And then that ending?!? Total tear-jerker! What an amazing movie! A fantastic example of less is more! Ingenious story, excellent characters & acting, timeless themes! Forget 5 stars--I vote 10! P.S. I noticed a lot of comments say this movie was slow. Actually, that's one of its many points. How much time in a day, a month, a year, a lifetime is abstract, trivial, even wasted? How much time do human souls actually spend focusing on what's real, what's meaningful, what lasts? This isn't an action-adventure movie. It's a profound introspective, reflective film--a soul-searcher that focuses on what really matters in life--and that emphasizes how it's up to each of us how what kind of effects or influence we create in people's lives.

@@squidsquaw Oh, what a great rewrite, SquidSquaw! As much as they need a revolution on their world to change their heartless evolution, she's not likely to command political sway there. Just like you say, to bring about the real & lasting change, returning to Earth with he & his daughter would not only complete their family circle, but also grant her the in-person, hands-on training to *experience* human-ness--to fully understand both its challenges & its rewards. (If she later returned to her homeworld, say, with a grandchild as her fellow diplomat, living evidence, & social mentor, they'd be a force to be reckoned with in the educated / civilized circles.)

Interesting take on the dangers of technological advance. As I've got older I've realised that having the fancy car and spending most of my working life struggling to keep up with repayments on the things we're supposed to want, I left all that behind. I now own a lovely house in southern Spain that cost the price of a family car, have no credit cards or debt of any kind and as a craftsman can work as much or as little as I like. I started watching this movie, expecting little or nothing from it. Then I was drawn in by the realness of the story, beauty, love, hope, pain, loss, that adds seasoning to life. Without the experience of pain and suffering, how do we really appreciate happiness and joy? I wonder what I might have told “the council”. I know that only God and eternity are completely real to me and this life is merely preparation for eternity with God. As a Catholic Christian I meet and love God through the people in my life. More often than not, I fail miserably, disappointing myself and those I love through my own bad decisions. Many times I hit rock bottom, deeply depressed, loosing my wife and two children. I pray for them, wishing I could see them again and ask them to forgive me. I try contacting them and they don’t reply-it is very painful. I don’t know where they live, if they’re married, have children of their own. I have to leave it up to God in His Own good time.
@emetelohim5295Ай бұрын
Trust them to God's hands if you have no way to reach your children ... and focus always more on Jesus, to be like Him, to live like he lived ... in one word, to Live His Word ... keep up brother, in Christ and in His Church (of course, Catholic Church)

Seems only people in wealthy countries hate themselves enough to think we as a species should stand trial. People in many developing countries seem much more happy as their lives slowly improve. Life is simpler. Small improvement make a bigger difference. Where as people in wealthy countries seem to max out on lifestyle so that finding any improvement gets harder. Bigger truck? Bigger house? More expensive coffee? Yeah, maybe coffee beans excreted from an Indonesian palm civet will make my life better? Yeah, that's the ticket.

To me, this is one of the finest movies that have ever seen! It was/is so true to form in many aspects of our lives. While I would not change anything in or of this movie if I could and had the desire to do so, I may consider changing the ending to have the 'girlfriend' remain on Earth with Ben, but then, her intent was to return home to encourage her people to reconsider their own emotionless life into returning it to an emotion-filled wonder...hopefully with improvements along the way.

The whole point of this movie was to put each one of us in Ben's place. Forget your sappy emotional syrup of Love and the other selfish feelings and ask yourself if you will help to advance humanity by changing our stupid pathways OR will we all simply have a cry and continue on to Starbucks and sit in our SUV waiting in line with millions of other numb humans to lazy to restrain ourselves. Between the two worlds available which will we choose ? Which path have we been going on ? Are we taking the right path ? Are we really concerned with others well-being ? Haven't we become like THE COUNCIL ? Think of that the next time you are idling away at Starbucks.
