Pro wrestling today is inferior to what it used to be. One of the many reasons is that today's wrestling lacks the great and entertaining manager. I could listen to guys like Blassie, Heenan, and Hart do interviews all day. Those guys were amazing! Freddie Blassie was born to talk into a mic. Thanks so much for posting!

It needs to be said.... Vince McMahon, pre-expansion, was a great announcer. Articulate, terrific straight man, good voice.... he was our Cosell. I'm on my third cognac btw. Six pancakes seemed like a good idea half hour ago, but now I feel like I'm about to give birth through my rectum. Holy shit, no typos!

This is hilarious!!! Thanks for the posting. People today have no idea how non PC the old promos were, which was actually the fun of it all. I remember the Grand Wizard calling Tony Atlas a "witless burrhead," and Waldo Von Erich referring to Denucci as "that spaghetti bender." The crap they sell today is boring beyond belief.

Watching this interview for the 1st time was when I realized something may have been up in pro wrestling. I started watching wrestling in Hawaii with Ed Francis' promotion. Fuji spoke pidgin which is what we speak in Hawaii. Then he's got this "japanese" accent on WWWF TV.
@RayNDeere13 жыл бұрын
@BottomlessJackDaniel The WWWF and NWA had a working agreement from 1971 to 1983 when Vince Jr. made the push to take the WWF national. There were a number of matches pitting the WW(W)F champ against the NWA champ in the late 1970s, usually ending in double-countouts or double-DQs so neither champ had to put over the other.

@rb62470 back in the territory days, it wasn't uncommon for promoters to work together on "supercard". Most of the time, it was the WWWF and the NWA doing this, with title vs title matches. I even remember from the Dusty Rhodes DVD they showed a match at MSG between Rhodes and Harley Race for the NWA title.

As a kid, I never once imagined that the clean cut guy in the yellow jacket was such a freak. Odd, but Backlund's manner and speech in interviews over the last 20 years seems like they could have been modelled on Blassie's delivery here.

Fuji was a wrestler for over 20 years. He was one half of the WWF tag team champions 5 times. With Mr. Saito and Toru Tanaka. Mr. Fuji was a great heel. He also held various regional tag team titles throughout the 60s and 70s. He was known as the "Devious One" for his mastery of ring psychology.

@fredblassie Sure he was all the things you said he was. But have you ever heard him call a match? He didn't know the names of any moves. He was too much of a face mark. And who can forget, "One, two, three. He got him! No, only a two count." Just because he had a nice voice doesn't make him any good at this particular broadcasting job. And I haven't had nearly as much to drink as you. Except now I want pancakes.
