​@@MrGiant Well how funny it is to not mention in this video that this happen also during what was known the Northern Crusades and was kinda part of it. Spreading Christianity to pagans... yea. Or that Slavs them selves took slaves as did Vikings - also from Finland and Finno-Ugric tribes in general during period between say from 800 at least to early 1700's - the Greater Wrath occasion being the last one of those events in church records. And yea - by then - they most certainly were making slaves out of also Christians in Russia - cause they had land slavery in existence until early 1860s. Even if it was first all part of the massive competition between Western Catholic church and Orthodox Church about how far they could manage to spread their faith. No, I don't claim that the slave trade has this origins, but it sure became part of it - cause well it had been going on even earlier. And yea sure Slavs had to put up also with Mongolian invasion. But funnily the video did not mention Caffa slave markets, which were located at Crimean shores, northern parts of Black Sea, where from they sold slaves south of Black sea, while also it was the end part of the Northern side of the Silk Road. It is similar over looking, if in this case due lack of much of data about it all online - as would be not mentioning the reality that it was black Africans who sold other Africans into slavery, when those slaves were taken from there to Americas. I mean, white man could not even go very deep within the continent for some time, because of certain illnesses that were common due mosquitoes bites and for which there was no cure at the time. And locals had been trading in slaves for ages by then anyhow - taking people from enemy villages or such tribes who could not defend against it. No I was not joking about that illness thing either. Apparently locals had better resistance for it. According to my old history text book slave trade had been going on in Africa the same as gold and ivory trade too. African pirates would even raid Mediterran cities and European ships, even sailing up the Atlantic coast and even ending up to raid villages in Ireland. And yes they took slaves. So no, it was not just selling possibly slaves through Europe from Slavic areas to where ever - that's almost more far fetched than, the older already well proven things I have here mentioned. (As a side note, Caffa was buy the way the very city were from in 1346-9 - 1352 lasted Black Death got on the ships to arrive into Southern European ports and thus spreading all over. And this trade was happening right in front of the Christian traders who came there for what ever one bought from Silk Road products at this norther most end port where that famous trading route ends at.) Nor can we ignore that it was white Brits who first abolished slavery, then you Americans, again lead by white actions - fighting the civil war over it. Never mind the reality that for example American ships and Swedish ships fought together against north African slaver pirates, at some point after that particular war to free them in US. In reality - if we think of modern day - slavery still exists, but namely in non-white regions of Earth, for example in certain countries within Africa of today. Anything from servants to child-soldiers forced into fighting. On the other hand, if we think real far back, like say what is told about slavery in the Bible - while god is but a fairytale to explain what people did not understand or know about before - it does record pretty well about how tings were ages ago. And yes it there states, even gives instructions, claiming those to be from god - as to how one is to do about slaves, what short of rules are about keeping them, where to get them, for how much and as to what sort of rights there are regarding to them. Either it is 'god' actually allowing slavery even endorsing it or then it was someone who decided that it's easier to keep slaves if one writes into the 'unchanged holy book' that god has so ordered. As someone in another a video said, about along these lines - slavery was in antiquated world such common that it was viewed as natural, even if that is not the case. The whole concept of human rights or even just that people have equal value is very new - and no - indeed no, slavery was perhaps in US related to 'race' which itself is invented word for which there is no biological basis. Skin tone is just about how much melanin we have and how much our forefathers have needed it due where ever they lived at. Other physical traits are but variety within species. Just think of dogs for a while. Most of those puppies are very different by breeds and mostly still able to breed between each other, which in general is relative good indicator for being of same species. There are no races of dogs, nor cats for that matter. Basically even 'cultivating' the whole concept is NOT allowing racism to lay to it's final rest, because - like said biologically and scientifically races do not exist. And no - slavery was not originally in any way related to what one looked like. The reasons pointed out in video are far more accurate to explain about it in the scale of wider world. And to add here - people would generally end up as slaves if their side lost a battle, a war or were simply captured during some raid. Heck sometimes families would indeed sell their own children or siblings into slavery for which ever reasons from inheritage greed to due being too poor to survive otherwise. And yes sometimes it began due depths to be paid, which too is by the way anything but humane. We humans have long been the wolves towards each other, that is impossible to deny. But you should absolutely not assume that Slavs did not participate in that trade themselves, or that they did not keep or capture slaves themselves. Land slavery was abolished in Russia only in early 1860s - and NO that is not the same even as what was the way western Europeans had serfs during medieval times. And yes, they would hold then Christian slaves too. Catholic and Orthodox churches did not get along that well, especially not so during the medieval times. Now that said, I am not very surprised that the video says nothing about Finns or Finno-Ugric peoples too (in no way related to Slavs) getting enslaved by the Slavs - because that history has very little material to be found about in English, even if those events from for example early 1700s have been recorded also in church books.

In Romania, in Transylvania, "servus" is an informal greeting, similar to "ciao" or "hello". I guess it means "i am at your service". At least, that is how I interprete it. We use it everyday, within our family and with friends (generally people you know). We don't use it to greet strangers. I always think about the fact that it is considered informal, its meaning is quite formal and polite (I am at your service or I am your servant).

"Slav" those not mean a " slave". We call ourselves Sloveni , Romans called us Anti or Sclaveni. "Slaveni" means people who have letter= slovo" and it also means slava= glory. Slavs call Germans " nemci" , which means " mute", " people who cannot speak our language" . It is the western historians narrative to sigmatize us as slaves, as inferior. In fact there was a slavery everywhere Roman were and with Mongoles, Chinese, Africans..too. We have our word for slave , it is " rob". This is the western school of history and since the 16th century it has been argued that Slav means slave. The name Slav appears much later, once everyone was called Serbs and the root of the name may be from the sickle tool for cutting wheat, because the letter p easily turns into b. Otherwise servus is a greeting. And Slav from the Serbian word for letter ie for speech, in the translation of people who understand each other, while we mark the Germans with a negation, we do not understand them and call them Germans - (Serbian for German is Nemac) .

@@SrceSrbije I knew about Vinca culture from my study of archeology - I was on archeology for 1.5 year but it was years ago. After that I changed to law study and now I m sort of historian of law. So Slavic peoples have also Vinca culture ancestors - nice :) My DNA is like 95% Slavic and 5% Baltic though I made only the cheapest of the tests so it very general view - I think that probably this 5% is connected with the fact that the ancestors of my grandma on my mother's side could lived in 19th and maybe also 18th century around Lithuanian capital area Vilnus and even today I can see on the maps of family names in internet that there are lots of persons with name of my great-granddad in this area :) In recent years I see it more and more than western powers via american popculture (Hollywood, which now is completaly justified to be called Hollyweird) :D always present Slavic cultures, nations, history and myths as backward or marginal, and heroes of Slavic origins in movies are usualy marginal or only showed as bad guys (drunkards, spies, gangsters, tyrants, racists, or simpletons and in costume movies we are shown only as peasants), and we are always somewhere on the margins of their culture. Its irritating. :D what they did with the adaptation of the Witcher books is ridiculous but - in the light of their constant marginalisation of our part of Europe - also appalling. I think that we can count on fingers of one hand all good, nice charachters of Slavic origins who appeared in the last 20 years of biggest American productions. My fav was Jacob Kowalsky from Harry Potter prequel series. Yes I m fantasy genre fan :) and the most freaking tolkienian you probably will meet in the next few years :D But even with my adoration for Tolkien and his legacy the problem of how western popculture shows us is still a problem for me. Yes, this propaganda is generally very spread . Tomas Sowell , a sociologist from US use it to justify the slavery in America . He talks about us as slaves who were enlightened by Germans and great western culture. Germans worked in Serbian gold mines in middle ages. "Pagan longer than other ethnic groups" IMO this is important part becouse it gives us picture of why slavery was limited and eradicated slowly from Europe - during 7th - 13th centuries. It was about that in Church laws and most laws which governed more than one European nations were Church laws - for 15 centuries what we can call international law was actualy Catholic Church law - christians can not enslave another christians. Pagans though was another thing :) It was the same in muslim world - they were not allowed to enslave other muslims and so they begin enslaving christians and pagans from the north of Europe - mostly Slavic ppls.

first laws against slavery were made by christian Popes in about 9-10 century. During 7-11 centuries there was this kind of alliance between clergy and aristocratic, rich women (who usualy were victims of robbery and rape and kidnapping for ransom during travels!) to limit slavery esp of women and children and clergy men - and actualy the first laws against slavery were about limit and ban of slavery toward those 3 groups. Why those groups? Becouse the 3 groups were deemed in church laws as "innocents". In medieval law "innocent" was not often deemed as "not guilty" of a crime but generaly as a person who can not protect himself or herself becouse they are not allowed to wear weapons! Innocents mean those who cannot weare weapons - swords. Men can have weapons so they can protect themselves. So as those 3 groups - children, women and clergy men (monks or missionaries) could not wear weapons they were deemed as innocents, so as unprotected and thats why - in time - international law of Popes begun to protect them from slavery, but also from other crimes - rape, theft, robbery. Famous William Wallace was one of the first persons who actualy was executed for WAR CRIMES against civilians. Under not only England's law but also international Church law. The other more protected group who was not to be bothered esp not by slavery and robbery were farming people - not all of them but only those who at the moment are working on a field. those elites knew at least that the law must protect people who grow their food :)

It's all so very interesting, because Christianity was introduced as official relligion in Rome by Constantine the Great and his mother Jelena . Jelena is from Serbia. In fact 1/5 of the Roman Emperors came from Serbia . So, it began here and spread throughout Europe. With the division to Eastern and Western Roman Empire , Serbia took Eastern , off course, the Orthodoxy. Catholic church lost it's credibility with forced expansionism, " sacred wars", intrigues, inquisition, banking and and many crimes against humanity. P.S. - There are good christians among catholics , but the Vatican is a corrupted institution .My mother in law was a very beautiful woman, a catholic from Croatia. When she was a girl many catholic priests tried to persuade her to become a nun. Luckily, she saw through it .

Why I said about 13th century - it was IMO mostly about 13-14 century that even the least advanced and most backyard places in Europe reconfigured their laws in such manner (the earliest such change were made even in 9th century) that what previously was deemed as slave become other kind of dependant but not entirely slave, and slowly it developed into a citizen or into a full subject of the kingdom, and why I think that it was up to the 13th-14th century? Becouse its the same centuries when in history of law we can say about big change of legal systems - such changes that eliminated all remnants of archaic, customary laws of TRIBAL legal systems and installed in most of European countries actual centralised legal systems based on written law (with additions of re-invented, re-discovered Roman law) of king's legal codes. It was the end of tribal law and with it begening of national countries and monarchies and with it the end of slavery - where the kingdom (or princedom or dukedom or Papal Church law, or Germanic ceasars laws) dominated and contributed much to the protection of citizens against slavery. I bet they dont teach it in todays schools :D

I don't get it. Everyone that hates slavery as they say. Then we should have more than enough people to stop the current slave trade of human trafficking. There are people suffering , women, children, and yes men. Used for sex, used for servents, used for human organs. Understanding the hard life people was enslaved in the past. Same things happening . Different people, but still just as horrible. We need to put a stop to this and educate people on how wrong this is.

There is a reason why they all took the Latin version, the official language in Vatican is Latin. And not all the Jews held slave trade. The original Jews are Sephardi and Ashkenazi took Judaism in the 9th century A. D. because being a jew was then an advantage in trading. Only 15% of Jews are Sephardi. Most of the billionaires are from the other group. There are luzicki Serbi in Germany , but they are catholic and protestant . As I said earlier, Serbs spread all over Europe . We are all so intermixed. Yet, the western civilisation finds Slavs intimidating and constantly try to suppress us. That is why they constantly try to divide us between ourselves- take Serbia and Croatia , or Russia and Ukraine as an obvious example.
