If you’ve ever tried to write horror in the Smart-phone era, there’s this ongoing struggle about how to isolate a character when everyone has a phone with them 24/7. So there’s almost always a scene where there’s no service or the phone gets broken/lost/demolished etc to satisfy that creation of tension. I feel like this premise is taking that new trope and giving it the middle finger by making the phone the vehicle of the tension. I think I want to watch out pretty much for that reason alone - lol.

Well, "One missed call" did the calls from beyond the grave already in 2003 so it's not exactly new ground. But I'm still interested to see King's take on it. I hope this isn't just Christine transformed into a phone though...

I'm sorry but I completely disagree. The only horror writers struggling to isolate characters are hacks. Cell phones have been used as the vehicle for the tension since they went mainstream in the 90s. This is a Netflix movie, that tells us from the outset it's not going to be great nor ground breaking. Netflix can't afford either of those right now. Good horror writers don't struggle to isolate characters, because they understand tension and suspense is so much stronger without isolation than with it. Terror that takes place inspite of having access to phones, inspite of being in a populated area, terror that removes itself from the off the beaten track and places itself squarely in the every day is so much more resounding. That's the kind of story that changes a person and stays with them for a lifetime. The Exorcist (1973) takes place in familiar suburb settings, involves doctors, police, neighbours, a university full of students and priests from across the other side of the world. Isolation isn't necessary here, it's the lack of isolation that works for the film. Bringing the Exorcist into the 21st century The Ring (2002) makes telephones wherever you are be they landlines or mobiles the driving force of terror. It does so in the setting of high density housing and suburbs, doing things that the movie viewer themselves is liking doing right whilst they're watching the film. In the ring the characters flee to isolation in an attempt at reprieve from the horrors thrust upon them in populated areas where no one can help them. In the Mist (2007), one of the few King adaptions that worked, characters are trapped in a store. But for all the Lovecraft inspired horror outside the store the real terror of the film doesn't come from the threat outside or isolation. The real terror comes from being trapped inside with other people, in an ordinary situation being turned into an opportunity for the demons of humanity to be exposed with full force and to be helpless to escape. To know that you live in a suburb, a city, a country, filled with precisely the same kinds of people and how thin a line civilisation is from human sacrifice. Orphan (2009) turns what should be a happy moment in a families life, the adoption of a child into a threat to the very families survival. It doesn't need to isolate, because the characters sound crazy to others in their claims. If anything that is the overdone trope of the post mobile phone era. Themes where the character is surrounded by other people whom are unable to help, in ordinary situations and yet the threat is unabated and inescapable work best. It follows (2014) is a literal deconstructionist paint by numbers of this concept. Writers trying to isolate characters by denying them their phones are hacks that should try a different line of work. Kings books often adapt poorly to the screen and if this trailer is anything to go by I don't expect any different here. It'll be watchable, but cliche af.

Think the people who went out of their way to write reviews compared it generic horror; a lot of them said it didn’t work or wasn’t even a horror movie because it didn’t include proper jump scares or gore or whatever. To me though, as someone who is easily frightened, I think it’s a perfect amount of horrifying without being straight up trying to make u scream

I just finished watching this movie "Mr. Harrigan's Phone". All I can say is that is Excellent attention to every little detail, just as Steven King always does. This movie is one of the very best I've seen all year. It held my attention from the beginning to the end. It was so good, I didn't want it to end. It has twists, turns with an air of constant mystery! The acting is superior on all accounts! It's good to see the Stanislavski's method of acting applied by all, (which is simply called "Method Acting" I myself studied many years ago, under the tutelage of the late master & director "King Page" @ Norton Gallery of Art, in Palm Beach, FL. I give this 10 Stars! It was so good to see Donald Sutherland again, he was fantastic in his role of Mr. Harrigan. Jaeden Martel should be up for an Emmy...Cinematography and location beautifully done (I adore New England locations!) It's a refreshingly well made movie on all accounts. I would hope that it makes the Emmy Award list! It's that good, in my opinion. Enjoy!

Yeah it was the highlight of the movie for me, for all the ruthlessness and spite that Harrigan has, he is still very much human, a pretty traumatized and spiteful human but still capable of love, that was the best part, but when he died the next part really kind of felt like a generic but a well acted horror segment, honestly I really didn't feel much nor cared, I am more interested in the little bits and pieces for me to speculate on whether this is a final will carried by a hitman hired by Harrigan or something supernatural, this movie is slightly mediocre, not bad but I wouldn't call it one of the greats, they did all they can and it's ok.

Great cast! I adore Donald Sutherland, and Martell and Howell-Baptiste have been terrific in other things I've seen.

A perfect film....Netflix finally did something right. I wish that it would have been released in a theater, and here's why....a theatrical distribution tends to get more critical attention, and I believe Donald Sutherland should get accolades for this.. He is incredible. And you accept his character as real from the first moment.. Everybody is pitch perfect...no complaints at all...Jaeden.was so surprisingly natural.....yes, I had tears in my eyes at points. My favorite part....when Mr. HARRIGAN predicts the future of cell phone usage.. Including the creation of fake news and its troubles...ABC NEWS (,Pay attention). A surprisingly different film than what you expect. Applause and Kudos to.Donald Sutherland and everyone else concerned with this wonderfully suspensful, yet moving, film. I gotta add this footnote...as the story builds, the role of the teacher, I believe the actress' name is Kirby Howell-Baptist, starts padding out and she is a scene stealer. Damn good character AND actress.

When Craig teaches Harriton how to use iPhone.. Reminds me a lot the time I spend with my late father, teaching him how to use his phone.. I miss him a lot...

Nice, this story was great! I also love the fact that Stephen King's son wrote The Black Phone which just had a film adaptation and now this, pretty cool parallel. 👍

I just seen the movie. And after a couple of minutes into the film, i've got a strong feeling it was a secnario from a book of stephen king. I am a big fan of stephen king and has read a lot of his books. When you got familiar with the writingstyle and theme's of how Stephen King tells a story, you reconise it everywhere. This film have a lot in common with a new book of him called a fairy tale. I loved it and i also loved this movie. A great story and great directed.

This movie looks great. I love how Jaden Martell is becoming the Shia LaBeouf of horror thrillers. The Book of Henry, It, It: Chapter Two, and Defending Jacob prove it.

@@waverlyking6045 I miss the great days when Shia LaBeouf used to collaborate with Steven Spielberg. I loved the Transformers trilogy and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull growing up. Too bad, Steven’s ego got in the way when Shia admitted that he mishandled playing Mutt Williams. I always believed Steven would win six more Oscars if he remained close to Shia. Thanks to Shia’s heart and strength, I saw Steven’s worth as a producer.
