The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

Got interested in who this Bashtirov actually was so I did a quick research. Turns out that "Bashtirov" is most likely just an incorrectly spelled surname of a guy called Boris Nikolayevich Bashkirov, the russian poet whose pseudonym was Boris Verin. He was a good friend of Prokofiev and is mentioned several times in Prokofiev's diaries as a pretty good chess player. He even played a game against Capablanka in a simultaneous match in 1922 which he had drawn. Thanks, Agad, for making me want to increase my vast knowledge :)

Thanks, John Doe I would like to add that Bashtirov does not sound like a valid Russian surname at all. Bashkirov and Bashirov are much more widespread. Even a simple search in Russian social network VK gives 0 Bashtirovs, 4K+ Bashkirovs and 7K+ Bashirovs. Well done! BTW, hello from St. Petersburg!

And here is a fragment of an entry in Prokofiev’s diary dated April 7, 1914 Old Style, in which he writes about the St. Petersburg tournament: “At eight o'clock I went to the opening of the Chess Congress and immediately got into the enchanted kingdom. An incredibly lively kingdom in all three rooms of the Chess Assembly and in another three assigned to us by the Assembly Committee. The tournament was arranged ceremonially, in tails, right there the maestro, surrounded by a crowd of people. Lasker, who has grown a little gray since the tournament in 1909, with his peculiar face, with a small figure and self-esteem; Tarrasch is a typical immaculate German with a mustache à la Wilhelm and with a haughty face; our Rubinstein is a rough, unintelligent muzzle, some kind of shopkeeper, but comparatively to the previous ones - modest, talented, dangerous for everyone, but not always reliable; Bernstein is a blooming man, with a cocky, handsome face, a shaved head, a huge nose, dazzling teeth, and unbearably shiny eyes. Our talented Alekhin in his jurisprudence jacket, with a slightly shabby jurist of a person, is not a particularly pleasant warehouse, usually self-confident, but nonetheless a little embarrassed by such a magnificent society. American Marshall, a typical Yankee, something like Sherlock Holmes, rampant in the game and ridiculously silent in life. Parisian Yanovsky, who deserted from military service and who, as a special exception, was allowed to come to the tournament without hindrance, dressed in an incredibly chic light gray suit, a conqueror of hearts and a former handsome man, now aging and wearing gold glasses on his top ten. Debater, brawler, vegetarian Nimzowicz, typical German student; and, finally, two old men, doomed to be eaten by everyone: plump Gunsberg and Blackburn with offense written on his face, who, however, despite his seventy-two years, retained freshness in combinations and elegance in party management. Capablanca’s overall favorite, young, elegant, handsome, cheerful and ever-smiling, appeared in all corners of the hall, laughed, chatted freely, and felt himself the winner in advance. So, I found myself in this attractive kingdom and was immediately captured by the upcoming contest. Speeches began in which the unprecedented importance of the upcoming event was particularly emphasized in view of the exceptional selection of participants. Correspondents from England, Germany, Moscow, Kiev, Vienna, chess players from Germany, photographers - all this increased the parade. Tomorrow is the first tournament !!! ”

Bashkirov Boris Nikolaevich (1877 -?) (Pseudo. Boris Verin) Poet, philanthropist. One of the owners of the flour mill concern "Bashkirov brothers". Friend S. Prokofiev, K. Balmont, Igor Severyanin. Boris Verin is dedicated to the collection of poems by Igor Severyanin "The Nightingale" (1923). Vsevolod Christmas. Pages of life “Boris Verin, he is Boris Nikolayevich Bashkirov, one of the flour barons of the Kalashnikov stock exchange, was famous in pre-revolutionary Petersburg as a very remarkable and endowed with many strange features. A rich man and a businessman with a very broad, as they say, "purely Russian nature", he passionately became interested in the poetry of the Symbolists, imagining himself to be called to serve the muses. A well-educated, multilingual lawyer in the university diploma, he nevertheless retained the features of a certain tyranny and extraordinary addictions. Considering himself to be the poet of the refined "decadent warehouse", this strange man was forced to divide his existence between the business interests of "high commerce" and the bohemian environment of the Northenian "poetry concerts". His business card read: “Boris Nikolayevich Bashkirov, a member of the Kalashnikov stock exchange committee,” and on the back was: “Boris Verin - Prince of Lilac”. Sometimes he was mistaken when he turned the card over to the wrong side - and this was the cause of many amusing misunderstandings in business circles. A frequenter of literary collections, an ardent admirer and patron of the Russian Modernism, Bashkirov was a close friend of C. Balmont and shared an addiction to exotic drinks with him. His home has always been a haven for representatives of the New Art who came from Moscow, and he himself dreamed, at the peak of Ryabushinsky, about the founding in St. Petersburg of some fantastic magazine Silver Fleece, without worrying about the mythological accuracy. Unfortunately, with all his business scope and unbridled imagination, he had a very low taste and in his personal poetic experiences did not go further than the most superficial dilettantism. He perfectly assimilated to himself the "Gypsy-romance" northern musician manner and became an indispensable part of this idol of the then public, invariably speaking with him on all pops. He also financed these concerts, and organized a noisy advertising, while not forgetting himself. They told about him that, going to the next “Evening of Poems”, this modernist knight would visit flower shops and order huge bouquets of his favorite flowers, to which were then attached wide ribbons with the inscription: “incomparable” or “captivating poet Boris Verin, the prince of lilac “. These offerings "from the public" always caused a storm of enthusiasm in the auditorium, when the "humble and confused by excitement" poet took them from the stage from the hands of respectful conduits as an enthusiastic tribute to unknown fans. Strong, tall, deftly wearing a tuxedo, Boris Verin, endowed with the features of domineering male beauty, produced on the hysterically-minded female part of the hall a no less vivid impression than his arrogant patron Igor Severyanin himself. He read his poems masterfully, albeit with a purely acting "rise." However, much could be forgiven for this narcissistic eccentric for his sincere fascination with poetry, for the sake of which he often forgot all his commercial affairs. At one time he played a prominent role in popularizing Balmont’s poems and, relying on his exceptional memory, he could recite his books by heart, page by page. Preferred his love enjoyed the collection "Liturgy of Beauty". Collecting occasionally familiar writers, this connoisseur of poetry treated them not only with an exquisite dinner, but also with a workshop with a recitation of Balmont tertsin and sonnets. ... This strange man was known in literary circles - poetic, of course, because at his own expense and at a loss he released a lot of skinny poetry collections of that time, providing disinterested help to poor authors. He was benevolent and non-envious. And although he himself was not distinguished by either talent or strict poetic taste, his love of poetry, naive and blind, was in its own way touching, although somewhat comic. ” tsarselo.ru/yenciklopedija-carskogo-sela/istor ..

Tough loss for Capablanca here, really hard to see how he could lose to The Hoodie Guy but still end up beating the likes of Lasker and Alekhine. 😂
