MR James is the renown author of many classic ghost stories, but 'A Warning to the Curious' is special because the locations it uses are so easily identifiable and accessible. Seaburgh in the story is Aldeburgh in Suffolk. Froston is Theberten, a few miles outside Aldeburgh. The White Lion is the Bear Hotel. Others pinpoint Sluice Cottage as the Ager's place. And the Martello Tower is right there to the south of the town.
This short video is based entirely on the coverage provided by wonderful MR James podcast. I really encourage everyone to listen to them...linked here;

Thank you. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these locations through the agency of your channel. When I was learning my even now rather tentative English, I listened to a lot of audio books, and I felt in love with Michael Hordern's readings of the tales, which I immediately purchased in book form, first in Spanish and then in English. It was love at first page.

I could do improve my Spanish! Excellent idea!

Regarding 'Froston', there is a church at Friston at about 4 miles from Aldeburgh, don't know if there are crowns, also noted that Theberton is a better match for the five or six miles mentioned in the text. Might have just used the place name. I have a book of MRJ ghost stories in my smallest room, its good to top-up from the source material from time to time!

Every small village around there has a nice church, but its the one with the crowns that I think is significant. I went back recently and spent more time at the Martello Tower. You can stay in it...costs a fortune, but would be a nice touch.

I think you will find the church with the porch and three crowns motif is at Happisburgh in Norfolk. and the exterior of the hotel is filmed at Wells next the sea. The woods are at Holcombe beach by Wells next the sea again in Norfolk.

The Happisburgh church appears in the BBC Xmas Ghost Story television version by Lawrence Gordon Clarke. It's one of the best of the 1970s TV M R James stories. What he's talking about is the original published story which is inspired by various Aldeburgh locations described as "Seaburgh".

I think Clark was absolutely right to film the excellent BBC 1972 adaptation in North Norfolk. The woods near Holkham beach extend almost right to the sea and are densely wooded, conveying an eerie atmosphere and deep sense of unease in the film most convincingly. Looking north from Sheringham (the heritage railway here was used to great effect in the film) on a clear day, you can easily see the dark silhouette of this wood on the horizon, extending seaward (on a small peninsular?). It always sends a shiver down my spine, especially when it is cold and bleak, and the day is drawing to a close… Happily, this film (along with most of the others in the series) was shot on 16mm film and the original camera negatives have survived. The BFI recently restored the entire series and have released the whole set on two blu rays (which I eagerly purchased). The restoration looks fabulous and this particular film has been put on YT. If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend you do.

@@FlopMeister71 Its not a big place, and its behind a rough looking hedge. It could be a perfect, gorgeous little cottage if someone had the money to buy it and do it up.

@@GavCritchley Ahh, but would they sleep soundly in it...? ;) Nice video, thanks. I'm a great fan of the area and MR James, but it's a while since I was last there. Your video makes me think I'll pay another visit!

Thanks for that. I can't think right now, but are there any other places that James based his stories? I know there are a few abroad, but I was thinking of England.

@@GavCritchley I see, that's great thanks. I just always get the feeling that James always had areas for most of his stories that he'd seen before. Thanks again.

Nice video. I am assuming these are the locations from the actual short story? The adaptation they did many years back featuring Peter Vaughan was a sterling job. The reason I mention this is because there's a there's a version of this adaptation on KZbin (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWjbe4aHjp2Gqdk&ab_channel=NoRemainingCommercialPotential), as well as a 'location' video which also features some of the original music. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGLJf3uYhbCnrJo&ab_channel=BookOfTheDead

Thats right, its the locations from the story, not the Peter Vaughn film. Aldeburgh is lovely, you could have a great weekend there. You can stay in the Martello tower even!
