It's 2024, the low barrier to entry for creatives and the ease with which they can reach an audience is unparalleled in human history. Unlike when we were young, though, it's not going to be served to you on a platter like radio did. You have to go out and look for it. I'll even give you a band to start with: the Stereofidelics. While they unfortunately broke up, it's still probably my favorite band of the 21st century so far.

Saw them open for The Cranberries at a small club in Portland OR on a random Tuesday for $3 at the door. It was months before this album dropped. Small venue, open floor, I was right up front. Counting Crows blew the roof off the place, pure energy. It was amazing to see, and I was an instant fan. After their set, as roadies were hauling out their gear, and The Cranberries loaded in, Adam Duritz was simply chilling side stage, pouring in sweat. Girlfiend and I walked up, and he chatted with us for a few mintues, nicest guy in the world. He told us they were from the Bay area, and he was so excited for the new album to come out. 6 months later, he was on the cover of RollingStone. (The Cranberries crushed it too, I stood 10' from Delores O'Riordan as they played most of "Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can't We" which had just released, and a few other tracks. She mezmorized me that evening, I swear she smiled right at me, and I'll never forget that show. Can't believe she's been gone 6 years now.

It's the sycopation! Music nerd time: The heavy hits are on "got", "be", "someBODY", and "me". If you notice, he doesn't even fully pronounce "there's" (drops the 'th'), "to" ('ta'), and "for" (something like a more rounded 'fuh'). There are other ways he could emphasize the line: volume and changing time are what occur to me. But the sycopation allows him to use enunciation to create emphasis while simultaneously giving the rest of the line a drawl that fits the conversational tone of the rest of the song.

I love how his perspective evolves during the song. The first couple of choruses, it's "she's looking at you / I don't think so, she's looking at me" but by the last chorus, it's less about competing and more about them finding their own happiness, so it's "she's perfect for you / man, there's got to be somebody for me."

The original Mr. Jones by Dylan was, among other things, about Dylan looking into his own soul and finding utter and pathetic emptiness. Adam Duritz lyrics is about how that emptiness is his constant friend, haunting every moment. Duritz puts his heartache out there. His heartache is so intense all he can dream about is being a "big big star" that "everbody loves" and that he will "never be lonely." (Don't we all dream of that?) His wanting to be a beloved rock star puts such an edge on the song -- how he fantasizes about 100% fulfillment -- and now he is a "big big star" it's heart-wrenching in some special way. Compare this to "Rock n Roll Star" by Oasis. The lyrics are about that kind of affirmation. I read Liam Gallagher recalling that when Oasis was nobody, they played this song and Liam was sure everyone was looking at the them funny, like "who TF are you guys?!!" Oasis sure showed those doubters! 😉

At the 2022 Beale Street Music Festival (which actually wasn't anywhere near Beale Street that year), caught Counting Crows on one night and Van Morison on another. That weekend I also saw Sarah McLachlin, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Stone Temple Pilots, Death Cab for Cutie, Indigo Girls, Soul Asylum, Third Eye Blind, and more. Best lineup, I think, since the headliners were Dave Matthews, Alman Brothers, and Van Morrison back in '96.

Amazing song. I'm around the same age as you guys and this song blew me away the first time I heard it. It sounds extremely like a 60s folk rock/jangle pop song, but with an alternative lean. Perfect for the 90s.

Waiting for this to play. Can't wait. Think you'll be wowed by it. I was hooked the first time I heard it on the radio. When I listened to it carefully all the way through carefully, I saw creativity, if not genius. And I go back to seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan as a kid.

I have seen a bunch of reactions for this songs but you guys had the most in depth observations and yours is the only one I agreed with on about every level. Back in the day, I have had a couple occasions that almost mirror the song's lyrics. I just wish that I could have captured that moment in song like this. It could not have been more perfect.

This is a "back to back" album- where you could pop in the CD and just let it play- no skipping tracks required and every song has it's own sound and emotion while unmistakenly being from this album. Give the entire album a listen- even if it's just you by yourself and you want to hear something new to you and just great.

This group had something special. Great songwriting, atmosphere, guitar work, raw yet effortless vocals. All their albums have some really top tier work and they’re all different. One of my faves from this era

I'm surprised at how much more popular this is than every other Counting Crows song. I wouldn't even put this in my top ten. Rain King, Long December, Goodnight Elisabeth, Angels of the Silences, and Round Here blow this one out of the water.

HS grad 1975. I’ve listened to music going to sleep every night since I was 4 years old & got a stack of 45s from my aunt. Became a jazz freak in college & about 90% of my listening is jazz. However, From at least 1975 til now this album & STP Core are the only 2 pop/rock recordings I can listen to all the way through. This one is gold for my ears from beginning to end. ROUND HERE next - just like everyone else says. Special props for the crystalline reverb-drenched guitar tones & gorgeous acoustic drum sounds. Producer T Bone Burnett I believe - masterpiece sound quality.

Probably the 4th or 5th best song on the album. For me, "Anna Begins" is 1, "A Murder of 1" is 2, "Around Here" is 3 and "Sullivan Street" is tied for 4.

Not from this album, but "Hanginaround/Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" is a must listen. You don't have to listen to them together, but on the album it directly transitions so I would recommend it that way. Also, if you want a hearty dose of melancholy, I recommend "Colorblind".

An album that just put lyrics on a whole new level. Every song on this album is phenomenal. Lyrics are so real so deep and so relatable. Just on another plane. Would have to put it as my number. One album. And I hate making lists because it’s so incredibly hard. You guys did a great job dissecting why it’s such a great song ❤

I saw these guys and thought they were great. My fondest memory though is after the band left the stage, the lights came on, the PA music started and Adam Duritz came back out and lead the remaining crowd in a sing-along to Mamas and Papas California Dreaming.

@@fenderfox5080 Ha, honestly me too. I was drawn to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. But there was always that "open door" in me that liked most anything that just struck a cord. Actually, Counting Crowes, particularly this song was getting close to boring me because it was SO over played and inescapable for so long, but it never did cross that line and always made me happy. I guess the somber "Round Here" evened it out, and "Long December" shockingly didn't get the play it should have! Then the 2000's came along and music was never the same again 😁

Song is one of the best of the 90s, but the video takes it to another level with how well it fits the song. Every song of the 80s and 90s I instantly think of the video. Some obviously make me think of other things eventually, but usually first thought is the video.
