1.42 onwards is bloody great playing. Wayne Shorter doesn't sound a THING like Coltrane 4.20 Wayne quotes Dexter consecutive major thirds whole tone drop a step... I love these guys playing so much . Thanks for this!!! : )
@jampoles5 жыл бұрын
I thought I heard this pattern before... thanks for pinpointing. Wayne Shorter's "triplety" runs remind me of his duets with Joe Zawinul. The amazing thing about these players is how their sound merges in and out of a perfect sync especially when they switch to octaves. At about 1:52 Dave Liebman struggles with overtones that he usually gets so easily but this doesn't discourage him from making some "in-between" tone/overtone haunting sounds that are just out of this world.

To have this video is truly a blessing of this event. My hats off to the great artists. How can they play like this everytime out??????

I realize you've probably already figured this out, but for those who are just learning this one, play concert Cmi6 instead of Cmi7. Cmi6 is the I, the tonic, for this tune. Cmi7 is a II chord in Bb, which would make the tune sound more like it was a II-V-I tune (Cmi7 - F7 is II-V in Bb maj). This tune never resolves to Bb. It's concert Cmi6 - Fmi6 - Cmi6, then Ab7 - G7 - Cmi6 for the turnaround all over a 12 bar blues form.

@theeviltwig minor7th chords are usually played as minor 6th, its a blues standart with minor 6th chords everywhere so you can play dorian or harmonic minor and still be inside the tone (at least that's what i hear in coltrane's version)
@scotscheer Жыл бұрын
Both shredding like crazy, fabulous. It just goes to show though how coltrane had chops beyond but kept the harmonic content of the blues never repeating anything. These guys alt out on patterns but coltrane was just ....Untouchable

Both guys sound contrastingly beautiful - Dave, 'Tranesque with some Multiphonics and lots of movements; Wayne, being his own man with his deliberate organization, coherence and improvisational progression. Sometimes during one's ad lib, one has to avoid the appearance of demonstrating a classroom of exercises. I am learning to utilize commas, semi-colons and colons, periods, quotation marks (to a lesser extent), paragraphs, exclamation points, paragraphs, tension and release, etc. during my improvisation. Needless to say Charlie Parker and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley were masters at punctuation and organization. The pianist explains these winning ingredients ably during his ad lib.

@kostor1991 I see. I was looking at the chorus of the song in Bb. To solo over in standard key (Cmin) Chros is Cmin7 2 bars Cm7 Bb Cm7. Bar 5 - Fm7 2 bars Cm7 Bb Cm7 (anticipated Dm7) G7 D7 G7 Cm7 Bb Cm7. Solo Section Cm7 4 bars Fm7 2 bars Cm7 2 bars D7 1 bar G7 1 bar Cm7 1 bar (G7) You can play more than the blues scale over this tune. Perhaps the bebop scale or the Dorian scale to avoid the blues notes all the time, also helps to hit those juicy sevenths.

Yeah, Lieb was playing the hell out of those changes. Both great and different
@jampoles5 жыл бұрын
Actually the sound Dave Liebman gets at 1:52 is not intended for getting high notes but about producing a sound that is normally impossible to play on a soprano because it's a mix of over-tones and sub-tones. This meeting was definitely not about showing off or schooling one another but two masters come together to pay a tribute to another master to whom they both admit of being indebted.
