Thank you for featuring my channel! I truly appreciate the effort you put into your videos-it’s inspiring to see how you’re helping others. This setting isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution but serves as a solid foundation that can be adjusted for individual setups. Some users might face challenges due to their DLSS base option or Sim Base resolution, while others might experience no issues at all. Keep up the fantastic work! 🎉

Hi! I usually follow your videos. You give good tips for performance improvements and talk about new drivers and new dlss files. All great work! This topic deserves better investigation since it's not talked about the developers. I messed with the secondary scaling in the good old 2020 with mixed results. If you turn on the internal "fps counter" from developer mode, you will see that it presents 3 different resolutions. A "pre", a "post", and an output. Secondary scaling is effectively changing the "post" resolution. It is indeed an upscaling. From what I gathered it's not related with dlss at all. The primary scaling is the "pre resolution" and its the one you set in the graphics settings of the sim. The secondary scaling is the "post resolution" and its taking the primary and doubling it if you use 2.0. So you are really asking the sim to render all the screen, all the frames at twice the resolution. It's like the slider for TAA to increase the resolution. And finally the output resolution is what is affected by DLSS or FSR. From my tests, if you keep the secondary scaling at 1.0 and double the resolution in the sim and apply the DLSS it has almost the same pratical result. Its not exactly the same I don't know why but in terms of performance its very close. Like someone said, doubling the secondary scaling, or any other value above 1 is demanding more from the gpu, increasing vram, increasing frametimes, exactly like increasing the base resolution. I think that option exists in the config file to give the user the option for resolutions outside the normal ones your screen can output. And the option exists from prior the release of gpu drivers that allowed adding resolutions above the max default resolution of the connected screen, aka prior to Nvidia's DSR. I haven't tested it but I bet if we change to TAA and increase the slider to other than one, save the setting and check the config file, the secondandy scaling will reflect that setting. Just a guess... Cheers and keep up the good work!
@DopeEx
@DopeEx Ай бұрын
It's exactly as you say. I wanted to test it and still had TAA selected ingame and the slider for TAA was at 100, if I set secondary scaling to 2 in the config, I only have a handful of frames in the main menu with TAA and a 4080 because the resolution with TAA is twice my normal resolution (4K). With DLSS performance it still looks much worse for me than with unmodified TAA and I have the same performance.
@TheAcousticCitizen
@TheAcousticCitizen Ай бұрын
This is the right analysis. 2x times secondary scaling is basically rendering your resolution at twice the size. Which can can take up a lot of GPU. That said, maybe running your usual resolution lower, than using secondary scaling times 2 would be good.

This is awesome! I did noticed a big impact on FPS in 2024, then I did a little test. If you change the "2" and input "1.2" instead, it has almost the same improvement on the ghosting (there is still a little bit but almos non noticeable) and the hit on FPS is not that hard. If you are struggling with FPS impact, try different numbers lower than 2 but higher than 1 and it might help as well! (tested on a 4070 Super)

The one thing missing from your video is the effect this has on your FPS. It definitely eliminates the ghosting, but also halves your FPS resulting in stuttery performance. Hi!! Just a quick one. Don't go for great FPSs in VR. Search for OculusDebugTool videos. There is an option to limit FPS in order to sync it with your headset's refresh rate. So, if you use 72Hz you want to find stable 36FPS. 80Hz -> 40FPS, etc.That way you will lower the computing load going to your visor and will keep a smooth experience. Hope it helps!

Thank you for the video. What you experience at 5:32 also occurs frequently on my end, but in my case it usually solves itself by turning Frame Generation Off and On again - in short, I found that the GPU sometimes gets confused with the frames and turning it off and on solves the problem. If that solves the problem for you, too, you may be able to use secondary scaling with better quality instead of setting DLSS to Performance.

Very good tip, feel like everything is sharper with a faster frame rate. I think I know why the menus get lighter, they are running a reflection / transparency layer on it, and when the sub-rendering is 2x it makes that texture layer twice as big, bet the image used has a light to dark gradient on it. I noticed when I was looking around the cockpit with the communication menu open and I panned over a canopy frame and it looked like a scaled reflection more then a transparency. So the down side is the fancy menu transparency is a bit more blocky, for having crisp gauges and LCD, I think I will go for sharper cockpit any day. It is also possible it will make reflections look different I have not noticed that yet.

Secondary Scaling to 2 just destroys my 3080ti. Performance is appalling unless I drop right down to the lowest DLSS setting. Native is 4K so it is attempting to render at 8K but with the DLSS its showing 2K in Dev Mode. Vram is well and truly blown. Tried this before in 2020 but it was the same results in the past. FPS went to a grand total of TWO with a 500ms cpu latency. Returned Sec Scale to 1 as it was jittery on lowest settings

You are still rendering in 2x your screen resolution, giving yourself hella lot more VRAM usage, core load and FPS hit. Check it out at in developer mode. The way that MS implemented DLSS in MSFS is messed up in FS2024 too unfortunately, all the glass cockpit gauges have ghosting (to a different extent, GA units are the worst), but ie. A400M Hud hasn't any - so I guess its possible to avoid it

"You are still rendering in 2x your screen resolution, giving yourself hella lot more VRAM usage, core load and FPS hit." Well, potentially, but that's where DLSS Performance mode comes in, rendering the overall image at 50% of your monitor real estate and then upscaling it. When I'm on DLAA it gets crushed, with Performance (which I never, ever would have thought of using) it runs like a top. Thanks to Air Bossman.
@sfl.simianflu
@sfl.simianflu Ай бұрын
@@IslandSimPilot What I'm saying is check your usage with DLSS set to DLAA and secondary scaling at 1.0, against DLSS set to Performance and secondary scaling at 2.0. It is not the same at all, settin to performance does not make up for it. Try some busier areas (and/or more resource-intensive aircraft like FBW a380). What you are actually doing is having MSFS scale your image in postprocessing to 2x of your resolution. Secondary scaling isn't even a DLSS term, it was there in settings of MSFS2020 before DLSS was even a thing

That white line in the water is the bane of MSFS. It really ruins an otherwise perfect image (apart from SSR which I can forgive for it's performance). If anyone knows how to get rid of this white line that I always see in MSFS2024 between the reflections at the edge of every lake, please let me know (if it can even be done). I've messed with the settings and nothing seems to work

I tried this with msfs 2024 and it didn't work so great. I get 12 FPS when I got 50 FPS before the change. The wierd thing is my GPU goes purple and runs at 100%. So I reverted to .1 and everything works again! RTX4070 super GPU.

And yet Asobo claims they can't figure out a fix for this. I gave it try and it works for me, but I didn't really gain any FPS. I use triple 2k monitors, with a 4090 and an I913900k processor and get the same performance on just TAA.

Great finding! Although I am on AMD GPU, but I think it also works for AMD GPU with DLSS enabler mod which also able to use DLSS scaler though it's FSR. But the base algorithm is still DLSS I think, the mod just intercepts the pathway and change it to FSR. I'll come back to give the result.

@IslandSimPilot I tried use the 2.0 setting provided in the video. But unfortunately, this trick didn't work with AMD GPU. The DLSS mod may use a totally different way for upscaling this time. I can see the post resolution actually doubled to 8K (I am on a 4K monitor). I have to use ultra performance level if I use the in-game DLSS super resolution setting to achieve a render resolution of 2K, which is the same as native DLSS quality. The performance isn't better compare to default secondaryscaling set to 1.0. Most importantly, it didn't fix the ghosting on glass screens. Glad you guys on Nvidia finally fix this issue, I will stick with FSR2 until asobo import the FSR3.1. Cheers.

Hi, I was disappointed in my sim, in the sense. The "trick" works very well and the sim would also be fine, except that I practically "continuously" receive the DXGI error with the related crash of the sim. As I reset this parameter (to default value), no dxgi errors and everything works normally, albeit with the problem of ghosting on the instruments.

If DLSS-Performance uses 50% of the resolution then this simply cancels itself out because secondary scaling to 2 doubles your render resolution. First doubling and then cutting in half just gives you your normal resolution, but you're creating a lot of overhead, so you're better off just using your resolution without all that stuff. This is the reason why so many people write that their performance drops completely because the card first has to achieve the double resolution before the fun runs through dlss.
@IslandSimPilot
@IslandSimPilot Ай бұрын
I tried simplifying it, but yes you are using 50% of the rest of the resolution, but the electronic flight displays are a different story. They are separate from the DLSS-Performance setting, and they use a lot of overhead. So reducing your GPU/VRAM usage with DLSS-Performance gives you the ability to then double the render scale of the electronic flight displays. If that makes sense.

Weird, I saw others who tried this with a GPU with less than 12GB of ram and it was killing their systems. It was also substantially lowering their FPS. You use a 4090 correct? I wonder why others were seeing the opposite performance after moving from 1 to 2. Maybe they weren't lowering DLSS setting like you did. Just saw your test was in 2020, did you have same results in 2024? I'll have to give it a try with my 4060 8GB. Thanks

Hi all! Without doing this ghosting fix (which i will try out) I quiet often get that stuttering when I start a flight (737-600 PMDG is my go to plane). I will pause, go to setting and lower the sim's resolution by one factor, save, then go back and restore to my desired resolution, and save. Back into the sim I go and tadaa!!! that stuttering is completely gone. This works for me every time, I mean every time. I don't know why the issue happens, I don't know why what i do works, but it works (at least for me). Cheers!

@ I have it as performance. Yes, DLSS and driver are up to date Edit: Apparently, the latest update to FS2024 lanucher rolled back DLSS to the original version. I have now swapped it with the latest and things improved a little bit, however performance is still far worse than with the scaling param set to 1.0 (and DLSS set to quality). I think I'm gonna stick with my original settings, but thank you anyways!
