My 1st Harley was a 1986 883 I bought used 2 days out of the Army infantry. Rode that bike all over the US, many many states. Have had 9 HDs...just sold off my M8 Limited bagger last year after a 2500 mile trip on it...I got to thinking on that trip I missed a slim, light, agile Sportster! I got an old evo sportster and a wad of cash for my Limited...very, very happy. After 40+ years of riding bigger HDs...the Sportster has returned my joy of pure simple riding. Happy to sub with your obvious love of the Lord! Be Blessed, brother. 👊🙏

Nice trip report, man! Looks like you had a great time. 1) A word about gas mileage: All of my (3) stock 883's got 55-60 mpg. My '86 883 with the 2.2 tank would go on reserve at about 95 miles. My current 1998 1200 only gets about 50 mpg. Then again, I live in relatively flat Florida. To get the most gas mileage out of a Harley, you must must MUST not "blip" the throttle at traffic lights and such. A lot of Harley riders do that subconsciously, without even knowing they're doing it and without thinking about the consequences. But each "blip" squirts gas right into the carburetor throat. Your 1200 seemed to be giving you about 45 mpg. That might improve as the engine breaks-in. If you're putting 1.8 gallons in, then you still had nearly 1/2 gallon left - enough for 20 miles or so. Harley makes a "king" tank that holds 3.3 gallons. Much nicer for long rides! It will bolt right on with no mods needed other than moving the petcock from the right to the left. 2) I've had that same seat you have on one of my Sportsters - WORST SEAT EVER. I researched and found a flatter seat with less of a scoop, so I could slide back and forth a little on long trips. 3) Loosen the banjo fitting where the brake line attaches to the caliper, and then swivel it so the hose moves away from the fender. My '86 883 did the same thing as yours - pissed me right off. 3) Throttle friction lock: Just use enough friction to keep the throttle from closing so you don't have to hold it open. You don't have to lock the throttle in place. Experiment! I love Sportsters, and I'll own one until the day I die. I think they're great bikes that get a bad rap from people who don't understand them, what they were designed for, and the limitations they have. You just proved that a Sportster **can** make a long-distance trip. Yes, they're a little squirrely on the Interstate because they're so light. But even an 883 will go ALL DAY LONG at 80 mph. I've proved that. If I wanted a big, heavy Interstate cruiser like a Honda Gold Wing, I'd buy an Accord. The Sportster may not be the best long-distance highway flyer on the market. But when I get to my destination, you know what? I want to ride a Sportster, not a Gold Wing.
@WildFaith Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for offering up a great comment! You clearly have a lot of experience with these bikes! After this trip I tuned and re-jetted the carb which resulted in more power and a bit more fuel economy. I also immediately purchased a gel-filled Saddleman solo seat.. what a difference! You are spot on regarding the front brake line, (among other things) - all I needed to do was rotate the banjo bolt and I would have avoided rubbing paint off the fender. I did go ahead and replace the brake line with a braided steel version and all is well now. I do still have some electrical issues I need to sort out. Currently I have no right side turn signals and the small lights below the speedo/ tach, (neutral/ oil pressure/ etc.) lights are not working. All in all, however I am really enjoying this Sporty! They are extremely versatile bikes. People like to poke fun because they are the "little Harley", but they can't wipe the smile off my face after carving some canyon roads ;) Thanks again, ride safe, and God bless you !

"If I wanted a big heavy interstate cruiser like a Honda Gold Wing, I'd buy an Accord." My sentiments exactly! I started out in the early 70's riding 650 and 750 Triumphs. Rode 'em 500 miles in a day many times. Mind you, I'm older now and I LIKE some comfort, which is why I ride my 97 Sporty, 1275 'Hammered'. Modern riders are too soft I reckon. ;-)

Hey brother! I'm a Christian biker in Australia who rides a 97 Sportster that was an 883, but which I've turned into a 1275 and done a few mods too. I've owned for 15 years and ridden it on a heap of long rides from Melbourne up to the Gold Coast (1100 miles away) and back, with side trips on the way and so forth. As an 883, the bike was okay, better than the old Triumphs I started out on back in the early 70's, but okay. I wanted the 1275 kit just to give me a bit more power and that has worked out very well. I had already setup the bike for long distance touring and the tank being a third bigger than the one you have, meant that every 160 miles I'd stop and fill up and stretch my legs. I managed to cover 500 miles in a day like that, if and when I wanted to get somewhere in a hurry, but these days I don't care about that so much. I always enjoy the ride, taking in the beauty of God's creation around me and that's WHY I ride. Not to set some kind of record. I've met and known plenty of people who ride big tourers and they all take a stop every couple of hours anyway, so I'm not sure why people make such a big deal about small tanks. If I was heading across the Outback, I'd fit a larger tank and have a Jerry can or two of course, because it's literally a matter of life and death out there. No kidding! Look it up online. People who head across the wide open places of Australia without adequate preparation often feature in tragic stories. The Australian Outback is a vast wilderness and you can drive for hours on a major highway (when there is one) and not see another vehicle. There are pictures of big warning signs placed on the side of highways and roads that head off into that wilderness, that list all kinds of things you should take serious note of. One is to take as much clean water as you can carry. AND spare fuel. ALWAYS let people know where you're going and when. If you breakdown, NEVER leave the vehicle (they're easier to spot from the air, should there be a search) OH! ALWAYS carry TWO spare wheels. There's more, but I can't remember them all. Obviously, on a bike, these things have to be adjusted a bit, but then, so is the route you're gonna take. I have a mate who's done what we call the big loop; all the way ROUND Australia, which is like going around the edge of the USA, staying as close to the borders of Canada and Mexico, plus the East and West coasts, as possible. That's less dangerous because that outer edge of Australia is where over 90% of the population lives, but mostly in the major cities, fo which there aren't many. Davey had some pretty hairy tales to tell when he got home, but he says that the Lord was with him all the way. Love my Lord, love my Sporty and love being out on the road with them.

Great Video and awesome find. The break and speedo line on those old Sporties had a metal thick wire looking piece they routed through to keep them away from the fender (the bracket u showed later in vid is the one) . I found my 93 Sporty with 243 original miles on it three years ago in Santa Fe New Mexico on consignment at the dealership there. Couldn't resist the buy and was able to negotiate a fair price. I don't trade my vehicles and just keep up the maintenance to keep them running so I still have my first bike I ever bought, which is my 2001 Sporty I purchased brand new. The noise is normal, most 883s and 1200s sound like sewing machines.

I thought I would watch a bike video. I didn't know I was expected to spend an hour in your church. Looks like a good Sporty, put some miles on it to break it in and with a few adjustments it should last you a long time. Hope the trip went well. I made it to the 27 minute mark but I can't take anymore praise to a figment of your imagination. Peace.

@@DabsNanime eh, some folks are very verbal about it...I keep my relationship with the Almighty strictly to myself. He did alot of praising, but hell, it seemed to have worked. No crash, no blown tires, no hit deer, no close calls...can't beat that for such a long trip.

When the bible went on to say that Jesus was God, all that really became nonsensical..... j.s. gotta think about those things if you're gonna think about it.

Not much of a video if you don’t even ride it in the video..felt more like an overly religious commercial..

Where was God when my friend got killed by a drunk driver on his bike
@WildFaith Жыл бұрын
First of all, I'm terribly sorry to hear this and want to offer condolences. Its a classic question, and a tough one, "If God is real and if He is good, then why is there so much suffering and loss and evil in this world?" The truth is that God has given every one of us free will. He didn't make us as robots, we can all make our own choices. And because so many of us choose sin, this world is full of hardship. Our choices affect us and those around us, probably a lot more than we often realize. Someone chose to drive drunk and the consequences of that were terrible. God allows us to make our own choices during our life on this earth and often times the results are devastating, but we can also choose to follow His ways and the result is a life filled with peace, joy, and love. The Good News is that Jesus came to this earth and lived a sinless life, the only man to ever do that, and He offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for all of our sins, all of our bad choices. If we only believe in His work and accept His forgiveness, we WILL receive eternal life. You can spend all of eternity in a place with no sin, no death, no loss, no suffering. There will still be plenty of pain during our time on this earth, but when you have the hope of heaven, you can take all of these things in stride. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss and I don't mean to downplay the pain it has caused in any way, but I want you to know the truth that God is still on the throne and He will make all things new in the end. God bless you friend.

@@WildFaith...so well put...and true. My best friend got rear ended on his bike and killed also. He was old, so am I, and so was the driver that killed him. God works in mysterious ways, as the saying goes. I kinda envy him because he made it to Heaven before me, and left me to deal with this goofy world.
