This is unreal what's happening to owner operators we need to band together and demand that if we are gonna spend 200k plus on a truck that they take better care of us this is going to put us out of business.

Actually, it was the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company that manufactures 82% of America's chips for military and civil computer systems including trucks, cars, etc. At the onset of Covid, they sold off their entire inventory to computer manufacturers that had the greatest demand for their semi-conductors because of the learm/work at home needs for computers/laptops. Our trucking companies cancelled orders when they severe slowdown occured when Covid first hit so Taiwan needed to survive and sold/sell the chips to computer companies. They are running 24/7 trying to get chips for our trucks of which Freightliner to Peterbilt stopped manufacturing and laid off all employees until the get chips in. There you have it.

As long as there is no wire issue, the plug will see you have def fluid . Leave the ground cavity empty. All it does is provide ground. Ther other 2 are power and signal. You have obviously not done research into the sensor. It communicates over the CAN bus, so if you short out the bus the whole vehicle will be inoperative because the CAN bus controls everything. The older sensors (hexagonal) are analog, similar to any other fuel tank level sender, but the square sensors are digital.

The worst part is PACCAR overseeing shops and shops having to do exactly what they say. My first truck was a 1970 Peterbilt truck and I kept that lipstick red truck looking new everyday I drove it. 220 cummins, with the five and four transmissions. At the end of five years I could pull in and park next to a new truck without feeling too bad about its age, I did look at the lower door handles and think, I wish I had them on mine. So my door was bad worn out and I got the new door and all the parts to change mine out and let me tell you it was not easy as one would think. I go into buy another door and kit for passenger side and spot a new Kenworth with fancy paint and scroll work done on it plus set up with air scales, and a new spring suspension.... had to have it so ask and believe it or not, sold them my old pete for almost as much as I paid for it and got the KW on payments and never looked back. A few years later and down in Denver saw a older red pete go by and feel a little pang... turns out he stopped for food at same place as me so I walk up to that truck and its no way that it could be my old truck, looking tired and dirty. We talk a bit and I pull out my photo album... and show him the pictures of my old red pete and he told me it really never gave him any trouble but he had put the new 350 cummins and a thirteen speed in it and was running some really tired 38's under it but were the same ones I put in just before I sold it. We chatted a while and then I told him I was headed back up to washington and turns out he was too so we traded rigs for a couple hundred miles. We promised to stay in touch but you never do. I did some checking and found a four hundred cummins engine with a thirteen speed as it was so easy to drive. I had that set up for years and decided to look for another new truck. I found my friend looking at the same time! He said, how much will you sell yours for and so he bought mine and I got the old red pete back for a very little as it was real tired. Didn't matter as I took it home and set it up on blocks and got me another KW because of the trim on the inside and wide cabin. In spare time I rebuilt the little red pete and my son was looking for his first truck... you guessed it, and he was the right person for it as he really kept up on it. One day he asked me, do you want it back as I have found me a truck I like better. That truck was seventeen years old and I told him no, I am thinking another new one and they are not cheap as they used to be. A month later my boy got killed down in denver when someone dropped a bowling ball off of a overpass. I quite driving and moved to Alaska where I was a mechanic till I got hurt. I still am and walk on crutches. I miss that first truck tho and of course my son

Many people have not done their research on this issue. There is no simple fix to this issue, aside from a software update from Cummins/ Peterbilt and waiting for the parts to be available. This sensor (labeled "module" on the DEF wiring harness) has four wires: power, ground, CAN+, and CAN-. It is a digital sensor. It senses both DEF temperature and DEF level. Checking the resistance won't do anything aside from verifying that the CAN interface chip is not totally fried. All of the analog things happen underneath the square metal housing, and that cannot be repaired. The older (around 2013) engines use an analog sensor unit, which has a hexagonal case.
@Lenchv13 жыл бұрын
I've heard that sometimes the problem isn't the sensor itself but it's the wiring harness shorting out.

That sensor has been a problem for me as well. Luckily it only took 4 days to get it. Now it would take 4 months. We wanted to buy one to put on the shelf, then it would just take a trip to the shop for the computer reset. No such luck. It is a level, def quality sensor. It is the quality part of the sensor. I am sure it uses resistance to "test" the quality of the def. The resistance will change with the % of urea in the DEF vs. distilled water. I am sure it would be repairable. This is not rocket science. It is a patent infringement deal mixed in with a supply chain problem, partly from Covid, and partly with the manufacturers being in bed with overseas (China) manufacturers of parts. Someone can fix this. We need to find them.
