This is a great trick. Im by no means an experienced joiner, but ive built about 6 or 7 roofs and love watching videos on it. What a great method for the angle. I personally cut a block the size of the remaining timber after the birdsmouth and measure from top of the wall plate to top of the block ive cut. And that gives me a measurement to where my plumb cuts need to be.

I think these builders who make vids of their work put the others to shame. Your skill, technique, quality control, site safety and cleanliness is there for all to see. Not just the end result but the hidden stuff that is so hard to see unless you are on top of every stage. One single mistake and all those that don't have the confidence to broadcast will pile in! I am pleased to see that there is enough space beneath the sills to install your top flashing, I’ve come across several sets of drawings which ignore this, I think with the intention of getting a specific head height and tiling fall.

We have already fitted the cavity closures in readiness but we use a company to come in and fit the doors so we get the warranty and the fensa certificate. Trying to get all the joints bang on is so dependent on so many variables ie the sole plate being dead level the outside wall being real parallel with the existing wall the nominal timber sizes being all the same size and square generally nowadays from my experience u can’t have all of them things falling in to place ( especially the timber sizes) so it’s always a compromise on a drawing it works perfectly but in reality it rarely does so u compensate as all chippies do on site and make it work but for me u still can’t beat traditional roof construction so great tutorial

Great video, over here most people machinery bolt down their wallplate, I noticed that in the UK you prefer to bed them down.

Hi Dan. We do add the wall plate straps as well as required by building regs but the bedding on is mainly to get it bang on level and flat. If we bolted down into those light weight thermolite blocks they’d shatter. Thanks for the comment. 👍🏻

That’s a good way of sorting the pitch how I do it is bottom of the rafter to top of ridge and lift the bottom to the height above plate I’d suggest trying out the ultimate roofing square

This method of setting out was used by an old carpenter who done nothing but 1st fix roofing kind of fool proof. He used to do a similar way for the hips but he nailed a scrap piece to wall plate be interesting to see how you set out hips.

I have really enjoyed watching the build series. This sort of thing fascinates me. But I'm a domestic gas installer and am very aware that the boiler flue terminal must not be enclosed - not even partially enclosed - and the build is reaching that critical point. What are your plans for that? A bit more info: The concentric flue is used for air inlet and products of combustion (POC) outlet. As the area becomes more enclosed, the dispersal of POC will slowly become compromised with the risk of air with greater CO2 concentrations being breathed in by the boiler. That leads to the risk of more C02 and then the dreaded carbon monoxide (CO). Now unless you have a sensor onsite continuously monitoring the CO2 and CO levels you will not have a clue as to the current situation. The typical "Oh, there isn't any risk; we will be ok" can evaporate very quickly when people begin feeling groggy. And just a bit more "food for thought" - you don't know the condition of the boiler as it is now. It may not have been serviced for years and could be belching out CO. Partial enclosure could raise the risk from [the unappreciated] "high" to "Deadly". I am being purely selfish with this post. If I can keep you alive then we will get the next episode... 😀😀

Hi and thanks for the comment. I’ve only ever used this method to get the plumb cut of a common rafter and therefore the degree pitch of the roof. I then use my roofing square set to the degree pitch on the hip scale to do the hip cut. However, it would be worth a go as long as you have got your height above plate off the common rafter first, transferred it onto your hip using the same batten screwed to the top. Don’t forgot to cut you wall plate corner off first to 45 degrees so you can get a full bearing of your seat cut. Hope that makes sense 👍🏻

Great detailed explanation. I have 2 questions. 1. How do you add stepped dpc or cavity tray over the catnic openings for the weep vents? 2. Where the rafter bevel rests on the ledger board/bolted wall plate, in what instance would this become another birds mouth cut resting on top of the bolted plate?

Once you have a pattern rafter done you can mark out on it. cut trimmers, part rafters, ladder. It looks like nothings got done. And then the nail gun gets it all on in a little over an hour.

The are typically called 'shed-roof' here in the States. I assume this in in Great Britain as his ledger connection only works if that is a structural masonry wall. Anything in the States built after ~1940 has what they call a brick-veneer'. You can't attach a roof like that to a brick veneer as the veneer is not structural.
