I ordered the newer D4 EU model (2016) from Amazon UK (supplied by Amazon) but they sent the older D4 (2014 non-EU). Is it worth trying them again or should I use another seller?
@MrBazReviews7 жыл бұрын
Hi Leigh was it from Amazon directly or fulfilled by Amazon? I'm not exactly sure what the changes are with the EU version if any over the previous one.
@leighhaynes7 жыл бұрын
It was Amazon direct. I paid slightly more as I thought direct would be a safer bet. I am also not sure if there are any real differences or if it is just cosmetic to distance themselves from the clones. Was your EU edition from Amazon direct? Great review by the way. On balance, I prefer the Nitecore for the extra battery support, clearer display and mains power connection. Just a shame it doesn't have the charge rate and LED indicators of the Xtar. How would you score these two? Would be interesting to know how you rank them vs the other chargers you have reviewed.

I have the Nitecore D4, just like in this video. I also have the older Nitecore Intellicharger I4. In the newer Nitecore D4, If I charge an 18650 to full charge, remove it and replace it back in again, it continues to charge more. so it will not charge to 4.2 volts. On my older Nitecore I4, I charge to full and take it out and replace it again it will not charge anymore. If I then put it into the Nitecore D4, it says 4.2 volts and will not charge anymore either. My conclusion is the older I4 does charge batteries to the full 4.2 volts where the D4 doesn't charge batteries to their full 4.2 capacity. Did you test the batteries in the D4 to see if they actually reached the full 4.2 volts or was it less on your unit?
@kosztaz877 жыл бұрын
If that's true, then the new charger is a lot better. Battery lifetime drastically improve if you don't charge them to 4.2 volt. I wish there was a charger, where you could actually set the voltage threshold. so it wouldn't charge the cells above 4.1 volt.
@marvelydecena49417 жыл бұрын
I've also experienced that to. When the AA batteries is fully charged in nitecore D4, I remove and replace it again but still charging. Is that an issue ?
@mshelton996 жыл бұрын
zoltan87 There are chargers that the user can set the terminating voltage, but you have to move to hobby grade chargers designed for the RC Hobby. Charger cost also goes up along with the need to actually set the charger for each type of battery and the charge rate. Look at iCharger and Powerlab chargers as well as ISDT chargers. Look up ProgressiveRC to find all of these. Like I said be aware that you won't find these type chargers for the low prices of the Nitecore and Xtar plug and play chargers. Also, the hobby grade chargers can discharge the batteries and monitor the mah taken out so you can find the actual capacity of any cell. I use and love the Nitecore D4 for 18650's, but I wouldn't trade my hobby chargers for anything. Plus I charge large high capacity Lipo cell regularly so they re a requirement.

I have had a Nitecore D4 running(24-7) non stop for the past 2 years, i have been using it nearly exclusively to charge some high end 18650's. Now my d4 died like 10 days ago and i will get a new one and will be getting a new Efest Luc Blu6 Oled. Now this is my personal opinion the Nitecore D4 is one of the best all round charger out there now a days, oh and remember its not because you can charge AA and AAA bats on this type of charger that it means its a good idea to do it.
@MrBazReviews8 жыл бұрын
Interesting stress test! I suspect new models are due from both makers next year though I find the D4 to charge better than their newer i series chargers I hope Nitecore do a better job on a new D4 than their other models both the new i2 and i4 tend to undercharge a bit particularly NiMH cells.. I'll try to get some 2 bay Xtar chargers to test too. Due to the lower charge output the D4 is probably a better bet if you regularly use AAA or AA cells. Would be nice to have a 0.5 amp across the 4 as an option. The VC4 has the advantage there if it's a factor.

Hi Ken my take is...I would go with the D4 if I were charging a lot of Ni-MH cells and sometimes lithium. The VC4 is probably the way to go if you charge more lithium cells or need the two bigger bays for wider batteries. Both are equally good at charging (no signs of over charging or premature termination on either).
@MrBazReviews8 жыл бұрын
I would tend to agree for bigger 26650 cells the faster charge rate might be a factor and you can charge 2 at the same time. I use this type only sometimes so single charging is fine for me. Now if Nitecore offered a D4+ with a choice of charging rates a little higher maybe even a test function that would appeal to me. I use AAA's quite a bit so the lower charge rate is useful to me. Not that I've had a problem with the VC4 for any cell types.

The problem with the VC4 is it doesn't charge all 4 cells at .500 ma instead it charges at .250 for each. It is super slow, so I used a usb meter to check the amps and voltage it draws and it was under 1 amp charging 4 batteries through USB, so I used a 5 volt 2 amp transformer and it was faster, but USB is slow. I used a usb adapter that is capable of two amps output as well. I wished I had purchased the Nitecore instead. It plugs into the wall, so it must be better than the VC4.
@MrBazReviews7 жыл бұрын
I've not found that problem I use a smart USB charger and it's capable of providing over 2.0 amps output so with 4 cells you can get 0.5 amp per channel. The D4 is the slower charger real world though both are quite good for what they offer
@adoniscmj32127 жыл бұрын
Nitecore has a new charger that I may get, It gives you up to a three amp charge, for those times when you just can't wait, but in reality that is too much current. My go to charger is still my 6 bay Efest charger that can fast charge two of the cells at 2 amps each or it does all at 1amp or .500. I love it, but it gets hot, so you have to keep an eye on it. I don't understand why they didn't put a fan in it. I may add a small one eventually.

Hi, wish to ask, I am aware of charging with low current Ampere is better for extending battery lifetime As we only charge two battery with Xtar VC4, will 1A too high for a new battery so we should always prioritized using inner two 0.5A slot or it is okay to use the 1A slot? Will the trade-off be significant for charging time and battery lifespan?
@MrBazReviews5 жыл бұрын
I use 1A for 18650 or larger, for smaller cells Li-ion CR123A/16340 or 14500 0.5A is better AA I charge at 1.0A and AAA at 0.5A It is true high current will wear cells out faster, but those speeds are pretty safe for those battery sizes. If you fast charge a 16340 at 1.0A is will wear it out quicker. Most 18650's will take a slight hit at 2.0A (not much), but higher charging will increase wear on them.

There are other chargers I have reviewed that do (ie test the internal resistant and others that have a full discharge and capacity test). Depends on your needs I use NiMH cells quite a lot as well as lithium so I find the D4 better (I can set it to a lower charge for AAA's for example). If you use a lot of lithium cells the VC4 has some advantages (faster charging) Other consideration is USB power or mains the VC4 needs a decent 2.1amp USB port to work at the highest charging speeds, the transformer is built into the D4. Pros and cons for both models there isn't a lot to pick between them in charging performance (both terminate correctly and don't under or over charge). Hope that helps a bit

Hi I have not used any myself that charge 4 26650's at the same time I'll have a look around to see if there are ones available
@DeksZagreb7 жыл бұрын
I've been looking at the Liitokala chargers because they can show both the internal resistance and the capacity of the battery cell on the display. Yet even their largest model Lii-500 can hold only two 26650 batteries at a time. Ideally, a good charger would have these qualities (capacity and resistance on display, among other things) and enough place to charge four 26650 battery cells at the same time. This would allow us to leave them charging over night at 10% charging rate (500mA for the 5000mA cells) so that we could use them next morning during diving. You've made some awesome reviews, did you consider the idea of making a video test of the best 26650 5000mAh to 5500mAh battery cells available in UK/EU at the moment? This is the battery test I often use to shop for 26650 batteries: lygte-info.dk/review/batteries2012/Common26650IndividualTest%20UK.html
@MrBazReviews7 жыл бұрын
Well I'm working through the batteries slowly I sometimes buy some in to test got a few sent, over time it will build up. I test the capacity and internal resistance and add anything else I have to say if applicable. It would be very time consuming to do detailed tests so I'll leave that to the site you mentioned. Only other option is to get 2 x smaller chargers say the VC2 plus which can handle 2 26650 cells at a time (and can charge 0.5/1.0 amp). Why not charge at 1.0 amp? It won't degrade the battery performance in any way, you can charge 18650's at 1.5amps without hurting the recycle performance
@DeksZagreb7 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm old school and we were taught that the lower the rate (8% to 12%) - the longer the duration of the batteries (less capacity percentage drop). It does not have to be that way with newer LiPO cells with advanced BMS but I guess old habits never die. I did notice that SOME LiPO and LiFePO4 cells capacity drops drastically if charged at a higher rate. But that could be up to the quality of the manufacturer. More than five years ago some A123 cells were extraordinary compared to the rest, but today there are many manufacturers who have caught up with the LiPO and LiFePO4 demand. This was noticeable on largers cells (which we were buying), but smaller cells would have a very abrupt capacity and power drop. Thank you for your fast replies, it's a good idea to get two chargers. I'll definitely buy a Lii-500 cause it has a neat resistance and capacity check on display and a reserve unit with only two 26650 cells.

Depends what cells you are charging if it's high capacity Li-ion the Xtar is faster, if you use a mix and smaller cells then the D4 might suit better. Neither are hard to use, the Xtar adjusts current based on the slots you use so middle ones 0.5A, outer 1.0A..or more than 2 it's 0.5A. The Nitecore is 750mA unless you adjust it down for 2 slots so you will want to us the Low mode for CR123A/16340 or AAA cells

Both will do the VC4 is faster, also there are quicker chargers if you need it but at 1500mAh you can't charge as fast as higher capacity cells. MC4 is also worth a look cheaper and same charge rate as the VC4 (single LED though) half amp for 4 slots or 1 amp for 2 slots.

VC4 charges at 0.5 amp for 3/4 cells D4 0.375 so the VC4 is faster. Neither are what I would call fast chargers you can charge 2 cells at 1.0 amp on the VC4 or 0.75amp on the D4. If you are using 26650's a lot (ie more than one charging) the VC4 is the better bet it can fit two cells, D4 one if it's button top (flat top might fit 2). If you want faster charging speeds ie 1.0 amp on all four bays you'll need to look at a different model.

Thanks for the efforts you putting in to make these Videos for others. Will the D4 allows you to check the true capacity of these 18650 batteries?
@MrBazReviews8 жыл бұрын
Hi Mamadou thanks for the comment. Neither can test the true capacity of the batteries the VC4 can tell you how much charge you have put in (that will only be useful if the cells are fully discharged and it's not as accurate as a proper tester which discharges the cell and measures how much current is taken out not put in). D4 has a timer not a mAh meter. The VC4 might be more useful for a basic idea, but if you look at the timer on the D4 and the approx. charge rate (it will drop off later stages of charging) that might give you an idea of the cell capacity. I use the Foxnovo F4S charger/tester for capacity testing it's quite accurate but has an annoying "beep" when it's finished. I am hoping to get around to a review on that charger maybe in a week or so. I use it mostly for that. Hope that helps a bit

We need a charger, where you can adjust the charging voltage threshold. If you charge li-ion cells only to 4.1v instead of 4.2v, they will survive significantly more charge cycles = much more economical.
@MrBazReviews7 жыл бұрын
There are very few chargers that can do that, this is one... bit.ly/2hIg4tf Two ways of looking at it you can see which chargers terminate a bit less than 4.2V, or just don't let the cells run down charge them at say 20% levels rather than the lowest point.
