Note that when it comes to NiMH, you need at least 0.5C (half of nominal cell capacity) charging current in order to terminate with -dV (or dT though the SC4 doesn't seem to have temperature sensors for the cells). With slow currents the microprocessor won't detect a voltage dip (or temperate increase if a sensor exists) and will not terminate the charge properly.
@MrBazReviews7 жыл бұрын
I might try some more tests when I get the chance. Sometimes they increase the charger current at the later stages to detect the delta V termination seen a few chargers do that when using lower current charging. I think this is aimed more at Li-ion users with the fast charging, maybe the i8 more at mixed battery users.

Compared to D4, it's faster and it measures capacity, that I like. But I found it being reliable in measuring the capacity it puts into a battery when only one slot is occupied. Otherwise it shows nonsense for some slots and you really can't tell whether it's accurate on any slots or not. I tried all four, three and two slots, but in all cases the readings would only make sense in one slot, not the others. So now I only measure one battery, that works fine. Also it does not like when I remove charged cells. Sometimes it stops charging the others, claiming aaa batteries are full at 1,4 volts. And mine shows 2 amps charging for every battery even if I put four 18650s, which it can't, because it only outputs 6 A in total. So there are flaws, and upsides as well, so I'm not giving away my D4s anytime soon.

Many thanks for this review, I bought mine beginning October 2017 based on this review and I am not disappointed. it is a fantastic charger. In my opinion much better than the d2 and d4, the ONLY con and I mean only con is the same as what you said the slight whine when no batteries are in but as its normally switched off soon after removing batteries I can overlook it. I did actually send the first one back to my supplies thinking it was a fault but they checked theirs in stock and spoke to Nitecore and apparently it is ok and normal. Best price I found in UK was ecig1 at around 39 quid. Again many thanks for the indepth review.
@MrBazReviews7 жыл бұрын
No problem djs glad it was of use to you. Yes there is coil whine (a bit) as noted in the review when not under load, not uncommon but I would like it to be addressed. The charged is good for a Li-ion charger if you need quicker charging, I'd change a few things though as mentioned but it's far quicker than the D4 which was just too slow and it's also better for smaller Li-ion cells no need to adjust the charging current it does it automatically
@-djs7 жыл бұрын
Mr Baz Reviews Yeah I agree a few little changes here and there but overall I think probably the best available that I know. Many thanks again.

Mr Baz Reviews Hi there Mr Baz again, Had my charger working overtime this last week and I am still of the opinion that I think its incredible, that whine we talked about goes away when there's batteries in. I have one other related question if its ok, I used to only buy Thrunite 18650 protected cells for all my torches but for months Amazon keep saying 'unavailable' and even the Thrunite website says similar. Do you know of a genuine brand and trusted supplier I can buy protected 3400mah 18650's from? I'm willing to pay up to £20 a pair similar to what I was saying for the Thrunite. I hope you don't mind me asking. Many thanks.
@MrBazReviews7 жыл бұрын
The Thrunite cells are re-badge Panasonic ones all the top makers use them just put their own label on them. So really any 3400mAh from any larger maker is going to be the same cell eg Olight, Lumintop, Klarus etc etc. Doesn't really matter which one you buy. Hope that helps a bit
@-djs7 жыл бұрын
Mr Baz Reviews Hi there, that helps an awful lot mate, I was thinking of purchasing the Panasonic ones off GearBest, I've had a lot of vaping hardware off them and its all been genuine gear but I've always stopped myself from buying 18650's from there, have you had cells from them and would you recommend? Precision charger with a very clever charging algorithm. The voltages are correct until the third digit after the decimal point of a laboratory voltmeter! Something very rare in Chinese chargers. I recommend it to everyone. In my version of 2019, there are no errors in the calculation of the capacity received by the battery when charging. The only downside to me is that I have 16 pieces NiМh AA size and they do not contact well, I have to put magnets for better contact.

How is this the first I've ever heard of this particular Nitecore charger? I bought an I4 way back in 2011, and it was my only charger for 6 years, til i damaged it and bought an Xtar VC-4 as a replacement. Although the VC4 has more comprehensive charging info than the I4, ive had some frustrations with it that i didnt have with the i4. But ^this new Nitecore charger looks like a great step up.
@MrBazReviews4 жыл бұрын
It's more expensive where as the i4 range was more affordable (and the D4) so it's probably less popular. There are some niggles here, but it is quite a useful charger to have if you need more control over charging speed

Hi Mr. Baz. I Have a question for you. I bought this charger about 4 months ago. Worked always well. But recently I put two LG 18650 3000 batteries and one told that is poor, I left them charging and then an error on display and some sparks on the battery that was with the poor status. I disconnect the charger from power removed the batteries and after a minute connected again and was not working. Now it is on warranty service. Well if we see a Poor indication on a battery should we remove it fast ? And never use it ? Other question is how the Recovery mode works ? We enter this mode only after the batteries are in right ? pressing the two buttons for a while. Then what we should see on display and what to do ? Thanks for the good review that made me bought this charger device. All the Best.

Trying to decide between this charger or the xtar dragon. Mainly looking for quick efficient charging & knowing battery health.
@MrBazReviews7 жыл бұрын
Well the Nitecore is pretty decent but..it doesn't show capacity discharged (which is the most accurate way to check battery condition), only shows charge put into the cell and resistance. Both are fast for testing the Dragon is likely to be more useful. I'm surprised Nitecore didn't add this feature to the charger it's something some users will want. Saying that it's decent enough for Li-ion charging. The Dragon is a bit better for Ni-MH (more accurate) and tends to charge Li-ion cells a little higher 4.19-4.20 to the ideal. Dragon downsides can't do individual charge rates per slot, can't do other Li-ion voltages, and it's either charging or testing can't do both at the same time (ie capacity test). Hope that helps in short no ultimate charger around right now, though for testing the dragon has some advantages

You must mean the i4 charger all lights flash if there is an error. That can mean not just a short but also it cannot charge the cell. No the activation feature (C and V at the same time) works for Ni-MH and Li-ion cells. You are much more likely to find it on Ni-MH. If voltage is very low it won't charge. If the C and V activation isn't working after a few minutes the cell is toast RIP. Had a few not that many but it happens

Mr Baz Reviews the other batteries of the same type don’t display all four lights flashing with the red on top. I think the manual that came with my i4 says that indicates a short circuit but something is wrong either way and I guess it isn’t charging. Red lights always seem bad to me off the get go. We’ll see if the reset fixed it. Either way I guess it’s a bad battery.

You can charge the Olight cells if you use a spacer on top of the contact point. The UM series does protected 21700 cells and they are OK (IR is miles off but they charge alright). If you charge AAA or AA they're not great as the cells can slip around. You can get this single or dual slot for a cheaper charger, 1.0amp speed so fine for larger cells. They also do protected 21700 batteries and don't cost too much charger.nitecore.com/product/ui2 I keep the single slot one around for solar charging too. They're OK simple but do the job. Most chargers still don't work with protected cells in the 21700 size a few but majority don't for some odd reason.

1.0amp speed for larger cell been the power storage or type? i imagine 21700 would be ok either way with 4000 or 5000 amp but what about the 18650 battery types? i got 3400 and 3500 types, would would be considered as larger cells just wondering, i believe UM could do 3.0 speed ?im thinking even 2.0 speed might reduce the life span of a battery, also u know any good spacer brand and seller for on top of the contact point?

Hi bro. I am a new visitor to your channel. I really like the way you review and to the point which led me subscribe your channel without a second thought. Indeed you are doing a great job and you deserve millions of subscribers. I would like to ask that I usually use 18650 batteries only from thrunite as I have few of the thrunite flashlights. Need your advice as to which is the best charger in your knowledge for 18650 li ion batteries. I really like the nitecore sc4. But do u have anything better than this in your mind? Or this is the best one.
@MrBazReviews4 жыл бұрын
This one is fine, Li-ion is simple to charge so really any of the better makers (ie not unbraned eBay stuff) will do the job. It's Ni-MH which is harder to terminate accurately. Depends if you want the nice display and other things. There are cheaper ones that also will do the job

Rip Gearbest and FastTech which where I bought the D4 in 2016.
@MrBazReviews Жыл бұрын
Yes I heard about that with Gearbest I gave up a good while ago before they closed, it was obvious they were in trouble. But I read they briefly re-opened for a bit. They did supply quite a few review items which was useful. I've been removing the links when I see them so will update this one too. I'm not sure Banggood is doing great either, I get 0 sales off that for a long time.

I bought this at work so luckily not my money but the UI is terrible and the time sharing makes it very awkward because you don't know what's going on. You can also prioritise slots which makes it even more confusing and this makes it a charger for which you should keep the manual within reach. I have a Liitokala 500S at home and the display and UI are so much better. Only downside to that is it charges Li-Ion to 4.25V which is above what I like.
@MrBazReviews3 жыл бұрын
I was hoping they would update it and the D4, but so far nothing. There are some areas to iron out as such!

Anything over 1amp charging In absolutely punishing your batteries and they won't last 1/4 as long the internal resistance will climb really fast over a really short period. Do not charge your vape batteries over 1amp
@MrBazReviews6 жыл бұрын
That's not entirely correct. Charge speed is directly related to cell capacity so larger 26650 cells can happily take a 2.0 amp charge without degrading performance. 18650 cells quality ones can take a 1.5 amp charge no problems, some high drain cells can take higher. I would suggest 1.0 amps max for 18650's 2600mAh, higher capacity 3000mAh and over 1.5amp max to ensure longer cycle times. High discharge and charging on cells can shorten life so if you vape you will be high draining cells unless you use lower power settings.

lol so if I only need the 2 slot version, I have to give up the digital display ... What the fuck are you doing Nitecore ..
@MrBazReviews7 жыл бұрын
Fair point aka the SC2 charger. Solution is simple don't buy a Nitecore charger Xtar and Miboxer make some very good 2 bay chargers C2 6000 capable of 3.0 amps per slot, LCD display, USB port for charging and measures internal resistance. I'd take that every day over the overpriced SC2. The SC4 is decent for the price overall, your choices extend far beyond Nitecore for chargers.
@vBDKv7 жыл бұрын
I've been using a Nitecore D2 for the last couple of years and it has performed fantastic, but it is getting rather slow (only charging at 500mA), so naturally I want to keep using an awesome brand that I trust. I have also come to realize that I absolutely must have a digital display as I take battery safety very seriously, so the ability to check charge time and voltage is a must-have for me. I will take a look at the chargers you just mentioned, thanks :)
@MrBazReviews7 жыл бұрын
The D2 is slow by modern standards as you say 500mA. I'm not sure if the company will update the D2 and D4 chargers or if the SC range is now the replacement. Part of me suspects that there is a place for lower cost ones D2/D4 with an LCD display. Even the VC2 Plus master can charge 2 bays at 1.0 amp and that came out a while ago. Look around though there are alternatives the C2-6000 is a good one very accurate termination and fast charging capable to date probably the best choice out there In some ways Nitecore are falling behind rivals, this one is good but the SC2 is overpriced yes it can charge fast but LED's no LCD? At that price and a peel off sticker didn't even engrave the markings...nah not even on my test list let alone buy list! Perhaps they will come out with an upgraded LCD version ie a 2 bay one like this with a proper display
