I’m still shooting with my D810 bodies, a D3s and D700… as well as two D7100 for wildlife. This Lens is my go to 50mm… using it for the environmental portraiture, landscape and product photography. I also use it for event and street photography. I agree, I used to use the Nikon AF-S FX 50mm f/1.4G, but like this lens better for what I use a 50mm for. Great review!

I like the lens it ticks many boxes and I even use it adapted to the MILC Nikon bodies as well as the DSLR's. It's small and light with good image quality and it's pretty affordable too. Little to fault really, one of the better 50mm's out there.

Appreciate this video...I have the 50mm f/1.8D on a full-frame Nikon, but it compares favorably with your 1.8G lens, in my opinion. Thanks for the information!

There isn't a huge difference, the rendering is different, but that's down to taste there. Glad it helped.

Such an amazing and focused review of this lens, very educational and helped me have a better understanding as I am new to using different lenses. Question, will this lens be any good for food photography?

Glad it was helpful! It depends on the type of photography for food you are doing. For example plate shots or normal shots then yes the lens will work well and has mostly a pleasing look to out of focus areas/low distortion. As with most 50mm lenses it doesn't focus "that close", so if you want to do much closer shots a macro lens might be an alternative. In short depends but it can work quite well overall

Yep, you covered it all on this lens. Refreshing to see a youtuber who does! Maybe later on review the D version in comparison or something, that one is quite popular because of the mechanical differences (aperture ring and screw drive) ironically. Seems to have some "soul" to it I suspect that is the appeal- rough around the edges seems to be kind of popular today. I like the G version myself have it too, just a lens you have to have in your bag.

I'll try to get hold of the older D one too at some point. Pros and cons with both from memory, but I think the G has better performance wide open/less CA, but as you say sometimes the flaws add something!

Hi... thanks :) I have a Nikon 3100... taking photos at night... my photo's look 'orange'... will this lens stop my photos looking orange? Or is my settings not set up correctly? I have it set on auto... 5f.... shutter around 150/200... and iso 3200 and auto iso -off.. Many thanks for your help :)

Check the auto white balance settings sounds like it's set to a preset value

Try using 2700 Kelvin color temperature in your white balance. Or try doing a custom white balance if your camera allows it. Google how to do it.
