Sean is actually a good person. He participates in charity too, he just doesn't plaster it all over the place. Sean and Mark (Markiplier) have been around for basically as long as youtube has been relevant and both are very actively charitable. They both make insane views, have a massive subscription count, but neither of them scream from the rooftops about the charity they partake in. Mr. Beast will always be problematic because he makes content under the guise of charity. He is just some dude who got lucky and has a lot of money and he wants respect and power. Every single one of his charity videos screams 'KZbinr records themselves giving a homeless person $100'. There is a fundamental issue with blasting your charitable acts all over the place. If you are doing charity and expecting something in return (the very act of uploading videos of such charity for money and views) you are doing business, not kindness. If you need credit for giving, you are not giving.

His line of "I guess I'll have to be the bigger person" made me roll my eyes so hard they almost stuck. The "bigger person" doesn't draw attention to something no one else is talking about while whining about how someone on the internet doesn't like you. The way Mr. Beast always reacts to stuff like this just shows that all he cares about is praise and attention. I learned at 13 that some people just aren't going to like you and there's nothing you can do about it except move on with your life. He's 25 and still hasn't figured that out. It also just backs up what Sean said--if he was really having fun, he wouldn't care so damn much about what other people think about him.

The biggest part I find bafflingly stupid about all of this is that the entire tone of the video is NOT SERIOUS IN ANY WAY. They were answering silly and "controversial", and very obiviously pointed, questions in order to be funny. Jack's comment wasn't a carefully thought out official statement declaring war on Mr. Beast. It was a gripe with the explosion of channels making content that can feel empty and soulless, content-farm style. I personally like Mr. Beast videos, but the sort of challenges or street giveaways need to be filmed in a way that isn't exploitative and a lot of people who are inspired by him don't seem to either get it or care. Not all of course. Often times Mr. Beast's clones are superficial imitations that take the content format, but not the behind the scenes practices that make sure you aren't grossly exploiting people and justifying it by just throwing them a hundred dollar bill in a video.

exactly. like it should be obvious that when youtubers do lie detector test videos, the entire point is coaxing each other into saying mildly controversial stuff in order to be funny because everyone knows lie detectors are bullshit. it's so weird that mr beast took it so hard and went to the point of saying it was "insanely disrespectful" like no matter how valid either of their arguments are that's such an insane overreaction and it does Not bode well with all the talk abt how mr beast has a massive ego. i'd understand if jack said something truly offensive abt him but his claims were like. the mildest shit ever. everyone and their mothers has said that about mr beast before. in my opinion it's just embarrassing for mr beast that he overreacted so much to claims that were like, extremely mild and unserious

The difference between Jack’s vs MrBeast’s statement is that Jack’s was said off-the-cuff in the middle of a video and so I doubt it was 100% reflective of his actual opinion on MrBeast’s content. If he had time to actually formulate a legitimate argument then I bet it would be more comprehensible than him going “he’s not having fun because his videos are short”. The thing that has always rubbed me the wrong way about Mr. Beast is the explicit power dynamic he holds over his participants & audience. Every episode I’ve personally seen has been him collecting dozens of fans and having them compete for some prize while, in turn, humiliating them and putting them in uncomfortable situations - which is always downplayed because they ‘consented’ to it. Although they may have agreed to participate, there’s obviously a clear power dynamic in terms of Mr. Beast’s audience, wealth, and popularity that is evidently impacting their contribution…. Maybe it’s just me, but it’s always given me Hunger Games vibes and I just don’t enjoy watching working-class individuals be exploited & paraded around like zoo animals in order to receive some sort of financial gain. It just seems like his videos are going to greatly skew what “charity” means for his young audience (I.e. the ‘do something for me and I’ll do something for you’ mindset), which is just sad. I don’t mean to hate on Mr. Beast, as I’m sure he’s just doing what he sees on his channel as popular, but I do wish he had more parameters in place to deal with these widely-held concerns head-on rather than continue to profit off of it.

that's exactly why the squid game video made so many people uncomfortable. the show was explicitly a critique of how working class people have to sacrifice themselves to the rich if they want to make enough money to live. so when this super rich guy comes along and is like "haha what if i recreate this show (minus the deaths) using working class people for entertainment because they really want or need the money, wouldn't that be cool" it comes across as very tone deaf and ironic. i don't think jimmy is some cartoon villain intentionally exploiting people using his power in society, i think he's just so disconnected from how normal people live that he can't wrap his head around how we view money. you could also take the "curing the blind" video as an example of him really just not understanding how power dynamics work. personally, i would hate my disability being used to make someone else money. appearing in a very famous person's video just so he could use my disability as entertainment for mainly nondisabled people would make me extremely uncomfortable. but if that famous person offered to pay for a medical procedure that would improve my quality of life? i would absolutely do something i'm not comfortable with if it means even a little less financial strain on my family. in that case, you could argue that i "consented" to the situation, but the power imbalance means i'm willing to put up with something i absolutely wouldn't be okay with otherwise. and i don't think jimmy even realizes that he uses his power over others to essentially reduce them to props for his videos

Fun fact; there are many people who do charity not just out of the goodness of their heart and do it for the glorification and gratifications from others. It doesn't mean what they are doing is bad, but it doesn't make them good people either and Mr.Beast does a lot of questionably ethical content and treatment of people for his content that I don't think can be saved by just 'he does charity.' And I don't think he's a bad person necessarily, but he is has been a blueprint for many creators and the changes to KZbin just like how back in 2012 the big KZbinrs were and in 2016 they were such as thumbnails and push for content. All of his content feels somewhat out of touch and comments like this make it show how disingenuous he kinda is to everything he has because he does some good while still being a millionaire. Also charity work and donations making a creator 'good' feels like a low bar because most creators I know of have done fundraisers and charity content without it feeling feeling like its done for the gratification of proving they are better but that's just my own take on how people argue for Mr.Beast.

Donating to charity is a MASSIVE tax write off. Most explorative businesses and billionaires do this too, it doesn’t make you a good person or a good company. Mr breast has promoted and encouraged rampant, uncritical consumerism, particularly to young boys and kids. His content makes him millions, charity gives him a tax write off and good public image ( which the rich have been doing for centuries) and his content doesn’t even inspire himself let alone contribute to culture, be it socially, informatively, creatively, inspirationally (other than making money to trash stuff) or within the industry of video content. I disagree with your initial take on this one. Mr Beast literally helped start the idea of high production youtube which made people think you have to basically have money to produce a game show to be successful on youtube, which immediately is shutting people out of the platform these days. He is a rich gatekeeper on a platform that was originally meant for people of all backgrounds to be able to participate and share their experiences, and whether he meant it or not, he is giving off vibes that you need to be rich to be popular on here. And I'm not against his messages, but yes if you are rich enough to drop $10,000 for people in need, then use it better. Don't use disadvantaged people as bait for your videos. Find a better way to help them. "I can't do anything wrong, I'm helping people". Okay. So then find a better thumbnail that doesn't belittle them like you singlehandedly saved all of the blind peoples' lives or something. He comes off to me as some sort of self-designated hero that no one asked for, sorry. His videos are fun and well-intentioned, and I agree he most likely has good intentions, but he can do wrong and he isn't infallible. He is conceited.

Sean was more reasonable and respectful than Jimmy in my opinion given he would not have expressed that opinion in public if he were not in that exact scenario of being directly questioned. I remember when he took a break for a bit because he felt like he was getting caught up in just pushing videos out as quickly as possible that he wasn't proud of the quality of his work, and wanted to step back and re-evaluate what he wanted to do on his channel. Mark has done this as well. But I just really feel like Seán doesn't see it as a huge thing if they basically had to bait him into saying it.

Like they said, caring a bunch about what some random person thinks of you is insecurity. Whether it's your favorite celebrity or KZbinr or actor or whatever. Also people are allowed to ask questions about what you think about other people. It's on Jimmy to be a mature adult and not be insecure about what people think about him. Unless I am actively friends with someone, I generally don't care what people think of me, lol? Like have you never been called ugly by a stranger? Or had people shit on you for no damn reason because they think you're weak or lame? It's like a part of life. Not everyone is going to like you or your work. It's ridiculous to care what everyone thinks. It's just a situation where you go "huh, that sucks" and then you move on because you're a grown up with a shit ton of money and a lot of responsibilities that don't include trying to manipulate your audience and fans into thinking you're the messiah of philanthropy. Frankly, I feel like you leaned a little hard toward Mr. Beast, especially in the middle half. A lot of my perception of Mr. Beast is through commentary KZbinrs, specifically FilmCooper's video giving a thorough rundown and history of controversies as well as Jake Doolittle who spoke about why the blind and deaf videos came off as ableist. Mr. Beast has been on KZbin for a long ass time because he wanted to be seen. He wanted attention, views, etc, and that is NOT a bad thing inherently. Every KZbinr wants views thats how it works. But when Sean would upload at his height it was clear that he was doing a lot of it because he loves video games and knows other people wanna see these games so they watch him play them. A lot of people in Let's Player's audiences deadass cannot afford to see wonderful stories that video games can and it helps indie game developers as well (like the guy who made the kids game about dead kids and a serial killer; FNAF. ;)). I don't think Mr. Beast is a bad person but he did make KZbin...different. A lot of KZbinrs like Sean have had to censor themselves aggressively, they can't make the exact content they want to make anymore because that doesn't get the platform views. That's not solely Mr. Beast's fault but he is the biggest KZbinr after the notorious vulgar Let's Player Pewdiepie. The platform did an entire 180 because Jimmy has short punchy loud censored videos for the kids to watch when Parent is busy. I'm not saying Sean doesn't make content for kids but spoiler he doesn't and never has made content for kids. He might have had to fall in line with the algorithm so he could continue the job he loves but he also just came back from a LONG ass break. I feel like Sean and Mr. Beast have their respective audiences but Mr. Beast was very clearly butthurt that a legendary KZbinr (that he used to look up to :'( ) gave his honest opinion during a lie detector test video

@bekcha4170 "notorious" = well known. "Vulgar"= he makes sexual jokes and swears a lot. Hes made some jokes in EXTREMELY bad taste. I will say the same about every let's player I've loved. Game Grumps is a big one. Mark has done it. Sean has done it. Me acknowledging their flaws isn't an attack, in fact, their vulgarity is why people fell in love with their content. The lack of censorship and unfiltered joy/rage/sadness is what made the legends legendary because we did get to see some raw emotion (Pewds crying at the Walking Dead, Mark crying at his 8 million music video, Sean crying over The Last Guardian). These guys defined my childhood but that doesn't mean they're absolved from choices they've made. But that also doesn't mean there still can't be love for them as a *current* adult fan.

Personally. I one hundred percent agree with Jack. Though I feel that KZbin was becoming more money based way before Mr Beast got popular, Team Ten being a good example. Also, Mr Beast acting like Jack hasn't ALSO done a shit ton of charity work. I remember the fundraisers he would do back in 2015 when I actually watched his content. If Mr Beast really wanted to help everyone, then he would do things like, advocate for government provided healthcare, advocate for affordable housing or PROVIDING AFFORDABLE HOUSING SEEING AS HE'S SITTING ON MILLIONS. But things like that don't make him money. They don't boost his image enough. Thus. He doesn't bother. It isn't about helping people. It's about power.
