but what happened to Marley? If God truly does exist, wouldn't he not take into consideration what Marley has done for Scrooge (and all mortals that Scrooge will help in the future) into account and allow Marley to rest in peace? This bothers me to not know it.

Purgatory is basically the place where souls repay their sins before going to heaven. He probably went to heaven afterwards

In the original context, Marley is “doomed to wander the world.” This explicitly illustrates the character as being eternally damned to the iron chains he forged in life. In Christianity, this principle is taught: God’s judgment is ultimate and cannot be overthrown. Marley is on the other side of eternity in the timeframe of his visiting and is warning Scrooge of a fate much worse, implying Scrooge is in a “do or die” situation. If Marley could just be free from Hell by helping his friend out, the entire stakes of A Christmas Carol are ridiculously lower and the purpose of any spirits visiting Scrooge is useless. According to Dickens, resounding generosity and charity are virtues that can only be executed on THIS side of eternity for God to judge accordingly. If Marley wanted to redeem himself at the point of his eternal bondage, each link and weight he is cursed to drag is there to hinder another good deed….reminding him of how he tethered himself to greed willingly during his life. Christianity teaches that mankind will spend eternity EXACTLY the same way they live their lives….either a slave to sin or a servant of true Love.
