It's weird how underrated Beckham has become; mainly because so many people call him overrated. I think people get distracted by the "Brand Beckham" part and retrospectively decide he was a mediocre player who got famous because of his model looks, but it just isn't true. He was a world class player who happened to have model looks.
@deadforever3 ай бұрын
This is 100% accurate. His late phase at Milan and PSG really showed how great an all round player he was because he basically ended up in the middle of the pitch and didn't really have legs anymore, but was great at making the space he needed to spread play and break lines
@iwrotewords5103 ай бұрын
As a kid back then he came across as boring but also the Spice Girl wife and modelling made guys think he was not for them and just got lucky. lol You think when your a kid/teen you know everything so when you saw his long passes and praised by adults you thought it was not that hard as you could do it too... when you played on a pitch half the size with zero positiong or real rules, and with less than half the quality. lol

It was like the ball was “alive”. Not just a well passed football. It’s like it had a mind of its own. Beckham was in his own league when passing a football.

@@shangwenger7982well no I’d argue his ball control and first touch were excellent and even though his dribbling wasn’t on the level of a flair dribbler like Neymar or Ronaldinho, he was remarkably press-resistant and could beat a pressing defender with his close control quite easily. Even just his long passing alone, this guy wasn’t just “good” at crosses, he’s literally the greatest crosser in history, and not just run to the by line and cross either, but he could stand anywhere along the right flank and pick a spot anywhere in front of him to put the ball into. His vision to calculate the trajectory of the curve and put it directly in front of a running player whilst also playing it with the right spin and power to make it easy for them to control is something only a handful of players have ever been able to achieve. If he hadn’t gone to the US, or perhaps even if he hadn’t gone to Madrid and instead stayed in Man United or another team that would’ve been more willing to make full use of his skillset rather than try to squeeze him into a team of Galacticos, then perhaps he would’ve been better recognised for the godly passer that he is.

Imagine being beckham and having a striker like Inzaghi whos always in the right place at the right time and can just 1 touch finish everything you send to him. Beckham is so underrated but his knowledge of the game, his teammates, space creation, his ability to play a ball perfectly in behind, the bend and whip he can get on crosses, corners, freekicks, long passes etc. If he had learned how to play in a Central position earlier in his career at United he would have been so much better. He had a period of time where he had to adapt to playing in the center because at Madrid you had Figo and beckham would never start over Figo at that time, so he was forced to play central. This is when his game evolved and adapted. I wish he never went to LA Galaxy we coulda seen becks play top level for all those years he spent in the MLS Glad he was able to play 2 seasons on loan at AC Milan this was an exciting time

Could drop the ball on a dime anywhere on the field and what it did was really expand and open up the pitch for his teammates completely stretching the opposition. Even in this video when he plays those cross field balls it usually leaves the player on the left with only one man to beat or a midfielder can make an underlapping run through the middle for the next pass. Honestly, Beckham was a great footballer, world class in his time and what's so great about him is that he didn't need to have all these tricks and stuff to make his style work. He was entirely basic or rudimentary even but he mastered the basics to such a high level that he didn't need any more to his game. Very underappreciated player and it would do a lot of aspiring young footballers the world of good to model themselves on Beckham and get the fundamentals mastered before trying anything fancy.

Bear in mind he had all this class in less than thirty appearances for Milan. One got the feeling that practically every time he touched the ball for the Rossoneri, it would be at minimum a highlight-level ping pass. It's kind of bizarre -- playing a hundred games for LA Galaxy at a much lower level of skill only seemed to make Beckham more elegant and confident than he had ever been before.

That’s not entirely accurate. He was the hardest worker of the ball. He used to run in a normal match what would be a Premier league record for the year (around 13+ lms). Hell he covered more grass than Kante in his prime. He also had a very cultured touch and was extremely press resistant. That’s why ancelloti took him to Milan and then PSG even when he was so old. And he also scored a lot (and I mean a lot) of goals for a midfielder, especially in his United days.
