This little sideboard cabinet goes together with all wood to wood joinery, no glue, nails, or screws needed. The framework is made up of quarter sawn red oak and quarter sawn tulip poplar. The panels are flat sawn red oak on show sides and poplar on the back and bottom. Framework goes together with draw bore pegs and through wedged tenons. The top is joined with draw bored free tenons and attaches to the base frame with sliding dovetails. The drawer uses wedged dovetails and stopped grooves so it needs no glue or nails to hold the bottom in place.
The finish is just some canola oil cut with citrus solvent, but really brings out the grain.

Very nice build! I was looking forward to seeing another video from you. I love your original joinery, very interesting. I just built a table and was thinking of joining the two parts of the tabletop like you did. But I went a different route in the end. But I'm glad to see the concept works! Thanks for making cool videos :)

Thank you, Ive enjoyed your videos as well! How did you end up joining your table top?
@DorianBracht
@DorianBracht 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I ended up joining it with a tongue and grove glued with 2k epoxy. I made it out of Bubinga, which is pretty oily and extremely heavy. Wood glue didn`t hold properly. That seemed the best way to go for this particular table.
@MrChickadee
@MrChickadee 6 жыл бұрын
I find if I do use a glue joint, I prefer to use it in concert with joinery as you described with your T&G table top. If time is no conscraint, of course as you know, joinery trumps glue, espcecially when serviceablility is in play, what joy to be able to take apart and move, or fix a piece at any time!

Notguilty Yourhonor American people have huge amount of talent and faith and courage. We are not bankrupt despite what hollywood and cnn and the dregs of the media portray. It is people that try to move onto positions of power without a clue how actually do anything that make a country look bad. Craftsmen like Mr &Mrs Chick have always been the backbone of the good things in life.

Nothing short of brilliant , man ! I re-watch your older vids often . You inspired me after 24 yrs of woodworking with power tools , to start collecting , restoring and making things the way you do and my grandfather did . Its fairly hard to find old tools here in Canada but I'm off to a , Half , decent start . I've been experimenting with some oil finishes on wood , olive oil turned all moldy on me , maybe I live too far north haha but what is citrus solvent and generally where is it sold . Thanks Cyril

Amazing work as always. Watching you since 2016 from Brazil and applying your lessons to my craftsmanship since then, which is inspired most by you and Proenneke... The 93-year-old grandfather of my wife, in one of his visits to my home, being well acquainted to carpentry in his youth, was really amazed to see the joints and the way I was dealing with wood (someday I'll show you and he'll jump of his chair). People only believe in machines and I really get a heavy conscience when I go to buy wood and see the machines processing them for me somehow... My opinion is straight that a machine is the opposite of progress. Best regards and once more your work is really mind-changing.

Im both flatered and overjoyed to hear your comment! It reminds me of a famous quote by the Patreon Saint of woodworking, Mr Roy Underhill, "these are not the tools and techniques of the past, no, they are the tools and techniques of the FUTURE!" Roy has 5 books on traditional hand tool woodworking and over 30 years of his TV program "the woodwrights shop" all dedicated to traditional woodworking, if you can find them I would highly recommend. The last 10 seasons of his show are available to watch free online here www.pbs.org/woodwrightsshop/watch-on-line/watch-season-episodes/

Mrs. Chickadee is toiling away, somewhere there, away in the background ,peeling, chopping, stirring, serving forth, the wiping &washing, the drying& folding, canning and putting up, ensuring food store enough, of gathered, and tending necessaries. In the equally paced, the quietude of the ordinaries, domicile domesticities, regularly left out of shared His/Herstory of any success. Probably not fed BirdSeed to fulfill Mr. Chickadee's caloric need; while wielding iron, saw, scythe & chisel, bellows, anvil, block&tackle. Breakfast FlapJacks, butter/maple syrup slather? Bread,&butter, cheese & pickle, wash it down with apple cider? At least, the is the image you conjure up. Ms & Mr, Chick -a-dee-dee-dee ! I believe that even skilled carpenters make/made mistakes, and maybe for some complex parts they would not do it all over again. At least back in the day when these hand made furniture etc were common and made for living. So how to make things look nice when wood cracks or measurements are not just right? You could imitate mistakes if you can't do them spontaneously :)

Great Job! One question: In minute 3:47, why do you start drilling the tenon just below the mark made? I've seen you doing it in other videos, is it always like this? It doesn't make much sense to me, as it looks like the markup would already be right in the center.
