FN 15 Guardian Review
bit.ly/2CHLudt
Why would you buy the cheaper AR over the more expensive one? We're comparing the FN 15 Guardian and the Tac3, and trust me, there are some interesting differences.
First up, weight matters to me, and the Guardian 15 comes out on top at 6.6 lbs, just a hair lighter than the Tac3 at 7 lbs. Every ounce counts, right?
Next, the rail length on the Guardian 15 is slightly longer, which I prefer for a cleaner look. Just like I prefer no-show socks with shorts, I like a no-show barrel!
One key area is the charging handle. The Tac3 sports a fancy FN branded radian charging handle, while the Guardian keeps it standard mil-spec. A top-tier charging handle can be a game-changer, but hey, it's easy to swap out!
Shooting-wise, both rifles perform amazingly, and the triggers are identical. It's just baffling that I can run the Guardian's mil-spec trigger like a pro!
But the real deal difference is the barrel. The Tac3 has a government profile chrome-lined barrel, ensuring a longer lifespan, while the Guardian 15 boasts a nitride-coated barrel, which could mean a slight accuracy advantage.
So, why would you buy one over the other? Well, you'll have to watch the video to find out! It's time to settle the debate once and for all. See you there!

As a 40+ year firearms dealer, when asked about what firearm someone should purchase, I always steer them towards a reliable but less expensive firearm instead of maxing out their budget on the firearm only. My response when asked is, they're better off buying a $800.00 gun and $800 on ammo, training, and magazines than buying a $1600.00 gun and not being able to afford to practice.

@@wesleycristman3278 The Ruger is good for the price. So is the SW M & P 15. For target shooting, and other "routine" shooting, there's nothing wrong with a cheaper AR. If you're getting into competitive shooting, or something like that, get a better platform.

@@wesleycristman3278 I'm a Ruger fan boy. My first firearm I ever purchased was a Ruger 10/22 that I purchased in 1977. I've sold thousands of Rugers and can recall 2 times in 40 plus years that I've had to involve Ruger in remedying an issue. And, both times they couldn't have been more accommodating if they tried. Saw on Reddit PSA was selling the upper and lower parts of an AR15, minus the rear sight, for $450. $450 for a virtually complete rifle is insane. Just goes to show how dedicated PSA is of their goal for arming everyone with an AR.

Bought my first off-the-shelf Colt AR back in 1993. After changing almost every OEM part on the gun over the next few years, it made sense to simply build my own the way I want from scratch. Been building every single one of mine in my collection ever since.

Building your own is the only way to go. Why spend more for a bunch of parts that you are probably going to want to change to your liking? The exception is for the first of that platform that you buy since you may not know what you want yet. In that case, start on the cheaper side as there is no reason to pay more for parts you are going to change out anyways. Furniture is a big one you can save money on since a lot of it is simply cosmetic.

I smell a lot of exaggeration. Or you spent $1500 on superfluous parts that don't matter. There's a lot of things that are generally worth the difference between a $500 ar and a $1000 ar, but as you go higher you get drastically diminishing gains per $. "Premium" ar parts aren't "overrated" if you're buying the right parts for a reason. Just depends what you're wanting it to do though.... like don't spend over $1k on a match barrel if you're a plinker who goes to the range once a year

I didn’t load all my money on to the most expensive rifle I could afford and then go cheap on accessories. In the end I wound up with a rifle that works so well for me, I can’t believe it cost me as little as it did. Most people don't even know why the expensive AR is better. Smith makes an excellent AR that would do just fine as a go to war or duty rifle. Smith saves money in the barrel...which the barrel performs just fine. They use 4041 CMV steel. Whereas, most companies use 4150 CMV steel. What's the difference, the 4150 is a slightly more carbon in the barrel making it a bit stronger. All euro made AK's...have been and still use 4140 steel. SO that should tell you 4041 steel is just fine. And 4150 is essentially overkill. Another cost saver is, buffer tube made from 6061 aluminum when 7075 is much better, Smith uses 7075 buffer tubes. The true cost saving are in the BCG, why most companies don't list all the metal uses. Only the carrier and bolt. When the extractor, cam pin, and gas key use a different metal. I know this because the family business is gun manufacturing and we've been doing it for close to a century.

I bought a DB15 and, frankly, after learning so much about AR manufacturing, steel types, etc. I'm very, very glad I did not pay more than I did (~$680) for a completed DB15 - it was entirely made with satisfactory (some more than satisfactory) methods and materials. I don't see the big perk of buying an even budget FN Guardian. Since then, I've modified it. To be honest, I should've built my 1st AR from the ground up and would've saved money compared to buying the completed DB15. That said, I'm glad I didn't buy a more expensive completed rifle above the DB15 since the only things left original from the DB15 are the barrel, BCG, buffer, and lower.

I have one of each, both built by me. After retiring from the Army I got into local Mid-Range Prone matches. So I built the best rifle I could with part of the VA lump sum payment. I followed that up 10 years later with a hunting carbine. Both built on YHM lowers, slick side uppers and both are 6.5 Grendel. Both came in under $3k. I'm not saying mine are better than anyone else's. But the Army gave me the skills, I'm going to use them. That said, my distance rifle isn't going to be carried very far. With the heavy profile barrel, piston system, Magpul PSR stock and all the other parts. It's beyond 10lbs. I'll build another upper for it someday to broaden its use potential.

Having shot both, the difference between a contemporary cheap AR and a contemporary expensive AR with all the extra gadgets, the difference is thinner than the margins on Arizona iced Tea. Forward assist is valuable to anyone who brass checks to make sure the first round is picked up and chambered, which I highly recommend. I was a Marine rifle and pistol instructor, and this is a built-in habit for a reason. A lot of M-16/M-4/AR-15 rifles will not get all the way back into battery when you brass check. Train and develop habits to fire reliably in adverse conditions. I do appreciate the points in this video. I own a $700 16” medium weight barrel profile Del-Ton AR-15 with MagPul furniture that is an extremely rugged and reliable platform. On the other end, I own a JP-15 with an 18” match barrel chambered in .223 Wylde, muzzle brake, match trigger, and a Low Mass Operating System that is the lowest recoiling and flattest shooting competition level gun I’ve known…. With the optic and mount, that one is about a $5k gun. Key point though… it’s a competition gun with unnecessary features for a decent combat rifle.

@@gregoryseguin5073 Honestly, it’s a great rifle and I would trust my life to it. There are definitely better platforms and features between the 2 rifles I mentioned… like free float barrels, improved triggers, better bolt carrier groups, etc… but I’d wager I could possible the 500 yard line prone on irons with this rifle. It’s not the best, but it is entirely adequate. Some people whine about how dirty DI systems are and that a piston w/adjustable gas block is better if you wanna run a suppressor. That’s fair, but I’ve never had a problem keeping my guns clean, and I still might throw a three lug on the end with a Flow556 or something and I could run suppressed no problem.

I remember when I was making my 1st AR purchase. I really wanted to go all out and buy a Daniel Defense rifle, but it cost around $2000-$2200. Before just jumping in head first into the vast world of AR’s, I wanted to make sure I would learn the AR platform and how it functions. I ended up purchasing a Radical Firearms RF 15 for $450. Not gonna lie at first I felt like I should’ve just gotten the DD rifle. Not that there was anything wrong with the RF 15. Right out the box it was accurate & has had zero malfunctions. It just felt like a cheapy. My homeboy has a DD V7 Pro and man I can feel the difference in quality between the 2. No disrespect to Radical Firearms. But after some mods I got that RF 15 running better than my homeboys DD. I upgraded the BCG with a LaRue Tactical spring kit & a V Seven cam pin & Ti firing pin. Then I installed a V Seven enhanced H1 buffer & Teflon coated spring. Also put a V Seven muzzle device. Last I put a LaRue trigger. Got that boy running like a champion. Guess my point is you can make a cheap AR run just as good if not better than a name brand rifle. You just gotta know what works for you & your rig.

I purchased my Colt AR15 off the shelf in 1976. The SP-01 didn't have a forward assist, just a stock Colt trigger, and the standard 'mil-spec pencil ' barrel along with the triangle handguards. So advance to today and I am working on my custom AR because of medical conditions. The platform offers a lot of improvements for little money as you mentioned. It is a great platform to modify for those of us who have 'busted' bodies and handicaps. I have worked with FN-FALs, G-3s, AK variants among others. But the AR platforms are by far the best and easiest to work with from a disabilities standpoint. Don't forget that the physical abilities you have today may not be as good as tomorrow's abilities. All it takes is one small accident that can change your life or turn it on it's head and your hobby, along with everything else, must be rearranged around your new physical abilities.

@@marlu6373 there’s a lot of carbon build up after shooting several magazines. Combine that with the dusty environment, sometimes the bolt has a hard time going all the way forward.
