When I think of Marlin, I think of the models 336 and 60. The 60 was a legend when growing up. It wasn't fancy but it was reliable and a work horse for small game hunting. The 336 felt like a solid hunk of steel. Again not fancy, but it felt like it was meant to slay deer. Whether it had a scope or not, you felt like you knew it was going to do what it was made to do. I don't currently own a Marlin firearm. But I can honestly say that if I was still into hunting, I would have another 336 for medium game, and a 60 or 75 for small game.

For the field, I carry a 4 inch revolver (sometimes an SAA) and a lever gun. All in 38/357. Same manual of arms for all the hand guns. Same manual of arms for all the long guns. Same ammo for all guns. Where I live, 38/357 will address any 2 or 4 legged issues that arise. 38 for practice (and snubbies), 357 for home defense and game. Reloading only requires a single setup. Oh, I also have 22lr models of each for plinking on the real cheap.

Both classic walnut and blued steel. But…I think this rifle is worthy of a video where you explore some of the different levels of 45-70 loads…Cause you where using loads that are more like smokeless loading of historical performance, stuff that nowadays would be considered good deer or pig rounds…but on the other end of the spectrum, modern full house 45-70 is only a few hundred foot pounds short of 375 H&H, and I’m quite certain those rounds will…well…you won’t be waxing quite so poetic after that experience.

@topturretgunner... Paul Fix portrayed Marshall Micah Torrance. Also one of the Enterprise's earliest doctors in Star Trek, along with John Hoyt. Josh Randall's cut down lever gun was a Winchester 1892 chambered in (probably) .44-40, as was Lucas McCain's, although I distinctly remember one time it being referred to as a .25-20. For show purposes, Josh Randall's cartridge and holster belt was loaded with .45-70 ammo that was utterly useless in the '92. In the opening sequence of The Rifleman, Chuck pumps out 12 rounds while walking along with a camera on a dolly before he looks directly into the lens. The way his '92 could hold 12 rounds is because the action was worked to reliably cycle blank cartridges which were shorter than live rounds due to no bullets adding to the length of each round. Removes any recoil as well.
@finngamesknudson14573 күн бұрын
Honestly - part of why I bought 357 lever gun is because it is light and small enough to carry on horseback. So far have only shot 38 and it is surprisingly fun to shoot! Mine is not threaded so unsuppressed yet with 38 special it is far quieter than suppressed 556 - more like 22LR from a rifle. Suppressed this thing would be approaching Hollywood sound levels. Subsonic, complete burn inside barrel, no action noise until you work the lever, no exhaust port pop - probably quieter than 300 blackout from suppressed AR. Plus the gun just feels nice in my hands. Ergonomic, light, balanced, and points naturally. What’s the downside - only 10 rounds, tough and slow to reload, manual action if followup shots are needed, more expensive than a lower end AR, ammo slightly more expensive than 556, and iron sights for my old eyes. Sights are fine in good conditions but I suspect I’d struggle in reduced light, rain, or even with dark background lacking contrast to the sights. Higher ammo cost is more than compensated by smaller number of rounds you’re likely to shoot in a session. I can empty a standard AR mag almost as fast as I can empty lever gun’s tube mag (30 rd vs 10 rd) then swap magazines virtually instantly versus slowly stuffing individual cartridges through loading port.

My father inlaw purchased the Henry Big boy in 44 mag a handfull of years ago. I fell in love and back then my big pistol was the S&W 686+ so I fancied the 357 mag version. Well time has passed and now have the Taurus Raging Hunter 44 mag in 8.38" barrel which is a blast. Lever action came back to me for my collection and went with the S&W 1854, I love it and the stainless that matches my S&W pistol collection and although I do like the black polymer stock set (makes it more tactical do appreciate wood on these fine guns.) I didn't see the Marlin more closer first and is one bad b*tch. Either case I'm happy as all can be still and yes, a lever action is a great one in the collection. Nothing like the full interaction with each shot, like pumping a shotgun only cooler with each action!!!!

I love the lever guns even though I don't currently own one. Right now, they're pretty pricey where I live. Marlins are beautiful rifles.

I have a 1941 Marlin Model 36 in 30-30. I'd like to have a new Ruger/Marlin 1895 in 30-30 (haven't looked to see if they make them in that caliber yet).

I think they have a 336 in 30-30. I had a late 40's 36 in .32 Special. We used 30-30 brass to hand load the 32. I wish I still had that old rifle. Got passed to me from my uncle, and stolen from me by an ex when I was overseas... Along with all my guns. Pretty shitty deal, but moved on and since made up for it. Don't have the 30-30, but .357mag, .44mag, .45-70 Marlins, and a .22lr Henry... lever guns are fun.
