My mom is a perfect case for this gun - I took her to the range with the array of carry/nightstand choices (working our way up from .22) and she picked the Smith&Wesson 380EZ. Yep. A friend of a friend helped my 68-year old older sister learn how to shoot a handgun. All she wanted was a nightstand gun - and he put her in a Glock 43. She could barely rack it, could not load it, and the tiny gun jumped all over when she shot it. Bought her a S&W .380 EZ performance center for her birthday. Has a tabbed follower in the mag so like loading a .22, easy to rack, easier to hold, less recoil, and far better, day/night sights - and a safety, so she is not afraid to keep one in the pipe. Now she looks forward to practicing. This is not the gun for everyone, but they serve a growing segment of older and newer shooters.
@daltongarrett7117 Жыл бұрын
I'd bought my mom a 380 ez and it didn't work well for her, it constantly stovepiped and occasionally the recoil would cause the safety to engage. Almost every time the last round would jump into the slide and stovepipe the last live round. We had several friends who have 380 ezs of their own and they work perfectly, so the one we got was a lemon I suppose but she isn't comfortable with that gun or another ez so I got her a p365 380, it's been a dream for her she loves it, it's just as easy to rack and it has 2-4 more rounds on tap, but no loading tab, which is a plus for her as that hurt her fingers to use that in the first place, but a minus for most.

To me, the reason to get a .380 ACP would be to have something super tiny that I could conceal almost anywhere. If I'm going to get something this size, I'll get it in a 9mm. I'm sure that this guy would be more enjoyable than a similar 9mm, but I just wouldn't see as much point to it. None of that is to disrespect the .380 ACP as a caliber. From what I've seen, the .380 ACP has similar real world performance to the .38 Special, and I love .38 Special. Mostly, I love revolvers. I spend more time practicing on pistols because I believe that they offer tremendous advantages, but I still love revolvers. In a revolver, the .38 Special round is great, particularly in the smaller-framed, shorter-barreled revolvers. Maybe I'll never own this model of gun, but I'm glad Ruger is making this model. Right, have a Ruger and like the .380, told by a trainer, disabled Cop, that the 9 is too much, it can go through someone AND a mailbox, whatever you carry, that projectile leaves your gun, YOU are responsible for where it lands.

With a reputable jacketed hollow point that isn’t a problem. Get some Federal HSTs, Speer Gold Dots, or Hornady Critical Defense and you’ll be fine as it relates to over-penetration. 9mm JHP’s aren’t known for over-penetrating. Although, it’s your gunfight, so carry what you want.

Terminal ballistics are important but more important is to have a gun that fits your hand, that you enjoy practicing with, can shoot one handed with either hand, and (if you carry) something that you won't leave home because it is too heavy. It also helps if it is easy to take down and maintain.

My burly neighbor is a retired federal agent who bought a 9mm Ruger LC9 for when he couldn't conceal his .40S&W Gock 23. On the first trip to shoot his LC9, I carried my wife's Ruger LC380, which was the same gun as the LC9, but chambered for 380. I shot the LC380 much faster and more accurately than he could shoot the LC9. He demanded to know how I could shoot so much better than him and I let him shoot the LC380, which he shot very fast and very accurately. There was simply no way the 9mm pistol could be fired as quickly and accurately as the 380 version of the same pistol.

Nice video, Colion. I've been considering a .380 for either a "bedside" gun as you put it, or perhaps as a back-up piece to the .40 S& W Beretta I normally keep as my primary sidearm. The Ruger Security .380 is now among those I will consider for that secondary roll. Also, I think my wife will be impressed with the Ruger offering as well. She is disabled and needs something that is easier to rack, but also has higher capacity. We had been considering the S&W 380 EZ for her, however, if the "easier to rack" requirement would be fulfilled by the Ruger, that would be another point in its' favor.
