Enjoyed this, Thinking about getting back into bikes purely for a bit of commuting and Sunday afternoon rides, In my early 50's now and thought I needed a big sports bike again, Seems these older GS are a bargain suited to what I want 👍

Yes since the R1250 and R1300 came out, the older R1200 models have tumbled in price! so a good time to pick up a bargain tourer 😁

I have a 2006 R1200GS Also. I love it. I actually traded a Harley for it. It was a nice Wide Glide, but I have a really bad Back. Between the Heat off the Harley Engine( Very Hot) and the Ergonomics. I would hurt bad before getting a Mile down the Road. No Heat at all on the BMW and so comfortable I can Ride 65 Miles one way to my Dr.s Appointments. I Love the GS. I wish I could get a Newer one, but being a Disabled Veteran, I can’t afford to survive hardly. Probably couldn’t without my Wife. Anyway, Great Video.👍😁

Not really ridden any Harley myself, but it's something I must do! And your right about riding 50+ miles without any issues on the GS, getting older can be a pain (literally) so a nice comfy ride just makes things easier 😁

yeah i bought a 2006 1200gs as well this summer and did the nc500 on it beautifull bike and a great mile muncher i agree for short stints around the neighbourhood i could afford a second bike besides it. A one size fits all is just hard to find at least one that i like ;-) This winter it is valve adjustments and doing the replacement of the shaft rubber boots.

I done exactly the same thing on my GS re the fuel cap and smelling petrol. Like the video format of going to a dealer and having a nosy at their stock.

Thanks for doing this review mate, I agree with pretty much everything that you mentioned! I have a 05 R1200GS, with the ABS (still working fine, touch wood!). Bought it with 76,000 kms for only NZD 6,500. I'm living in New Zealand and with the gravel roads here, a dual sports bike made sense to me. Also, like you, I'm approaching 60 (closer than you :)) and have sold my 200 bhp bikes (B-King and ZX-14). I love the bike, especially since it is so tall (I'm quite tall as well). I have a different nav set-up, using a IP68 Android tablet, wirelessly charging and running DMD2 plus all the various nav apps that Android has. I also have a bluetooth wireless OBD-II unit hooked up, so I can look at engine management live on the tablet :). One thing I really like about this bike is that it is very robust, I "bumped" into both walls of a tunnel here (Moki tunnel, Forgotten World Highway) and despite some broken stuff (including headlight) I could continue riding fine. The damage was easy to repair and the cylinders (with the full crash guard) prevented any damage to my feet (I also wear full motorcross boots and all other protective gear, so only a small bruise on my upper arm). Point being, these bikes are tough as nails and that is what I really like when going back-country New Zealand. The lack of liquid cooling is a good thing in that sense, less likely to sustain damage that stops one from going on after a back country fall !!! Even though I originally wanted to buy a Japanese bike (I just like them for their reliability), in hindsight I'm glad I got this one (only affordable option at the time). Enjoy the bike !!!!

Totally agree that if I were considering a bike for long distance riding regulary, I would more than likely choose the GS1200, But for me the 1200 and 1260 Ducati Multistrada just offers so much more for the money, although the GS is an amazing budget adventure bike, even a 2013 can be had for £5k now here in the UK, which makes it a real bargain for anyone thinking of trying these types of bikes out 😁

@@Budget-Cars-And-Bikes I hear what you saying about the Ducatis, they do offer a lot. The thing is, would they stand up to the beating they'd get offroading on a regular basis?? I don't mean hard core racing, just overlanding like Ewan and Charlie, Itchy Boots, my good friend Gilles (around South America and Africa on the same R1200GSA) and the likes. I wouldn't risk it with a Duc. If we're talking about UK/NZ/Europe/US type "vanilla" overlanding, yeah that would be fine I'd expect :).

@@genieb No I would not be comforable taking a big Ducati off road, but a cheaper GS no problem at all, the GS is a lot easier to fix at the side of the road too I imagine 🙃
@genieb9 ай бұрын
@@Budget-Cars-And-Bikes , exactly, the air cooled BMWs in particular can be fixed with No. 8 wire and duct tape. I love Ducs, they're beautiful bikes, I have had the pleasure of riding a few unique, extremely rare ones (including a one-off superbike build). They're nicer looking and sounding than pretty much any bike in the world, but they're still not very reliable nor robust :).

If talk about being old, I swear that I will not look out for your videos ever again. I am in my mid seventies and when I’m riding any motorcycle I still feel like a young man. Just get over your self and ride it like you stole it and bloody well think your self lucky that you are still able to get on a motor cycle and enjoy what time you have left. Stop being so damed negative. Just get on with it. M J W

It's certainly a great way of testing the water when it comes to the GS. These can be had pretty cheaply these days as you can see from this video. And will no doubt go on to cover many more miles. Oddly enough I was discussing the Silverwing with a friend only a couple of days ago, and how I hadn't seen one many years on the road.
