Yes! More medaka videos. Thanks for showing the shopping portion. It's great to see how they package the plants in small containers. 👍

Thanks Keith!! I agree! also I like how it’s just a regular hardware store and not a specialty shop that sells these aquatic plants! keeps them fairly affordable!

I'm sorry, I keep thinking of new questions. It seems to me, most of your containers are quite small and I'm wondering what your smallest pond setup is and how many fish you have in it. Or how many per gallon do you aim for. When I Google this, I see 6 fish for a 10 gallon tank, but that's seems much bigger.
@Come2JapanDan2 жыл бұрын
No problem. Yea most are smaller in size around 6-8 gallons, but some are larger 16-20 gallons…Ideally under stocking is the best as google recommends but I usually go a bit over that 9-12 fish… just have to play around with the balance of the little eco system to see what fits.

Do you keep them outside in the winter? Does it get cold where you are? I read that they are pretty cold tolerant.
@Come2JapanDan3 жыл бұрын
Yup I keep them outside all year around! It does get cold and I have had them ice over before. Also long as it doesn’t freeze solid and you break up the ice they are fine! Thanks again for the comment!
@joeyspijkers98673 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response! That's what I found after some more research, but it's good to be sure. Sounds like a good fish to keep in the Netherlands, and not too commonly kept here.

Do these fish breed seasonally or year round? Do they need a certain temperature to trigger spawning?
@Come2JapanDan3 жыл бұрын
Hey Thanks for the comment! They are most active in the summer months when water plants are thriving and in full growth. That being said I have seen small fry in the dead of winter as well!
@davidcooper94323 жыл бұрын
@@Come2JapanDan Thanks for the speedy response. One more question, I gather they appreciate being in the sun but is that another breeding trigger or will they breed readily under aquarium lighting?
@Come2JapanDan3 жыл бұрын
@@davidcooper9432 They thrive in the sun for sure! I have heard they will do just fine under LED lights, but tend to do better with natural sunlight.

I want to get my own medaka fish :DD they are so cute. Sadly medaka here is in the US so I don’t want to mess up if I do get them. When they get an outdoor pot pond tank, do you need to cycle the water? Or can you dump tap water and some dechlorinator, some plants and wait? Also for me, the weather here is cold, usually about 29 F in winter and occasionally lower. Would the fish be fine overwintering in these conditions or would I need to bring them in? Thank you 🙏
@Come2JapanDan3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I use tap water and let it sit outside for a few days so that the chlorides will naturally evaporate out. You can use Dechlorinator as well. These fish are really strong and adaptable so I have never cycled the water and they do fine. As long as the water doesn’t freeze solid they are fine. I have had ice in my ponds and the fish are fine. Thanks again! Hopefully this helps!

How many medaka do you think I'd get away with in a tub approximately 20" long, 10" wide and 6" deep? Moving some of my strains around, so I've got 16 in that tub above with lots of devils ivy, but I think this will be temporary!
@Come2JapanDan3 жыл бұрын
Hard to say exactly as its hard to know how much water it holds….after a quick search about 1 liter per fish, maybe more! Always better to have a bit more space and lots of plants to filter the water. But medaka are really sturdy fish and withstand a wide range of conditions so you should be ok! Thanks again for the comment!

Hello, i am seeking to make my very own Medaka pond i have purchased a half Whiskey barrel i was wondering if you could answer the following. What plants do you need? How do you keep the water clear? do i need to treat the water from setup and if so with what? do i need any kind of aerator/pump? can i make a waterfall as i heard they like still water ? (wouldn't want to stress them out) do i need to do regular water changes? what do you feed them and how often? Can i use gravel on the bottom of my barrel or would this upset the fish?
@Come2JapanDan2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Lots of questions. I will do my best. 1. Basically any aquatic plants are fine just make sure you have the right amount. 2. I don’t treat the water but since my water has chloride in it I let it sit outside for 1-2 days so the chloride evaporates naturally. Then its safe for the medaka. 3. I don’t use any aerator or pumps. 4. I don’t have any waterfall, but you are right that they prefer still water, they will jump out to find calmer waters… 5. I basically don’t do water changes as the plants filter the water, but if i do change maybe 30% of the water its like once every 3-4 months… 6. I feed the regular fish flakes, nothing special. I feed once a day. I feed less often in the winter. 7. I use aqua soil and coarse sand. I also sometimes place larger stones in as hiding places. Hope this helps! Medaka are strong fish and can be kept in lots of conditions!

@ChrisJohnsonCJs-Kitchen2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking all of these questions, I was going to ask several of them myself. I have 2 more questions: 1. You mentioned the fry are voracious eaters, do you feed them more than 1x/day? 2. Do the fry actually need to be removed from the adults when they hatch? I see most people are isolating them, but assume that wouldn't be the case in the wild.
@Come2JapanDan2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks again for the comment! 1. I usually only feed once a day. But I have read 2 feedings, morning and early evening, is ok for growing fry. But again I only feed it once and they do fine. 2. I separate them as the adults will eat the fry when they are isolated in the same little pond. In the wild they would have lots more room to hide and survive. Thanks again! Hopefully it helps!
@ChrisJohnsonCJs-Kitchen2 жыл бұрын
@@Come2JapanDan That makes sense. I found a pot we aren't using that I hope is big enough, I'm guessing it will hold 2.5 gallons of water. I'll have to find a 2nd container pretty soon so we'll be set for fry.
