friend of mine is keeping them outside in small pond, sometimes top level gets some ice, so they can tolerate wide ranges of temperatures, you won't make them breed in winter outside but at least you can keep them in unheated aquarium inside - big savings on energy

@greenmachinesweden2 ай бұрын
@SerendibAquatics And they do fine in my unheated tank that goes down to 5c in winter. However they do not breed during that period. In summer they go outdoors in a black tub that goes up to 22-23 degrees in peak of summer. Then they breed like crazy. I cant help to wonder what keeping medaka in unnatural hot water does to the metabolism and life span? There are studies on koi and it affects life span greatly.
@SerendibAquatics2 ай бұрын
@greenmachinesweden brother i agree with you. Medaka will thrive in asian contries that naturaly have high temperatures also. Yes as you mentioned that high T may be a cause of reduce lifespan of the fish. According to my expeeience medaka can easily tolerate wide range of water parameters.

Mine are outside (in shaded shade house) Temps are reaching 35, they are in a planted tank no filter or bubbler. - just like in a standard pond or very slow moving creek -nirth Queensland aus
@greenmachinesweden12 сағат бұрын
@danielthompson3205 my medakas is outdoors in summer as well. Outdoors may mean different conditions to us. The water rarely go over 20 degrees. In winter I move them indoors. This year I missed one by misstake. I do not dare to move it in now that the temperature difference is that big. We have had two cold spells below -10. Approximately two weeks each. After the cold spell I remove 10 cm of ice, do not want it to melt in the tub stressing the fish with 0 degree melting water. It is still alive and thrives, althou a little slow and obviously not breeding. I am not supriced. They live naturally in Rice fields in Japan which also gets frozen over in winter. I do not question that they can tolerate 30c, just that it should be needed for breeding. My fish breeds the best in late summer at 15. By that time they do not need that much protein and will not eat that many roe or babies. Most of the late summer fries survives without me doing anything.

I have a small tank set up for the eggs, but what do you do once a few of them hatched but some of them haven’t? Do you transfer the fry to a different holding tank and wait for other eggs to hatch separately?
@SerendibAquatics8 ай бұрын
No.no. keep them in same tank until 3 or 4 days. Feed them very small am9unt of egg yolk solution. After day 5 you can transfer if you want. I put eggs 3 days into same tank. Next 3 days to a another tank. It is easy.
@afifahzulkefli8 ай бұрын
@@SerendibAquatics i see. do you do small water change to this fry tank until day 5 when you move them? i guess i worry the feeding would contaminate the egg that hasn’t hatched.
@SerendibAquatics8 ай бұрын
It is according to the fry count and amount of egg yolk you put to the tank. Purpose of water change in fry tank is maintain the water quality. Most of the time when we use egg yolk solution , remain foods produce ammonia and waste products. When we do daily small water changes it is better to maintain water chemistry of the tank. I also feed them but contamination may be their. Tanin contain water give some protection and low dose of food may be effective against contamination.

I find the cooler temperatures somewhat better for keeping and breeding. In the UK we'd keep them outside in small ponds or rain barrels without a heater and they survived ice and snowy conditions well. Temperature: 64.5-71.5 °F (they tolerate a very wide range, but this is considered ideal)

What should i do ? and if i use your method by taking the females out , how do i know that the eggs are fertilised ? Thanks in advance 😄
@SerendibAquatics10 ай бұрын
Good. you confirmed that there are 2 males. If males are mature enough to spawn. At the time they lay eggs males will put sperms at the same time. Then when you see females with eggs alredy fertile. No matter take the females and collect eggs. But put all eggs into same water from same tank. And parameters should be same. Planeria and snails should not be in the hatching tank. Then after 5 to 8 days you will see fry.

Yes correct. But i kept some more fish with them. To confirm the stability of tank I aerate all my tanks. 1) it will help to give proper oxygen into the water. 2) toxic gas ( ammonia and clorine ) will go out with it. 3) water movements give the active aquarium feeling. You are correct without aeration we can keep medaka rice fish

If we put very small number of fry into very large tank with much more plants without any other fish they will survive. If we separate 3 fry and try to feed them most of the time it will fail. If you have less number of fry. Below 10 please keep them in a large tank with much more plants they will grow slowly. Next time try it.
