Great explanation... Many thanks for sharing. Picking my first D5 car tomorrow and need to know as much about things like this ;)

Thanks for this, very very very informative explanation. The swirl control arm has broken off on my D5 2.4 2009 Volvo XC90... couldn't fathom what it actually did. Found the name in the Haynes manual and then your brilliant video explained what it does! So now I know and know why it's also covered in oil!!! The boost is leaking!!! Got a bog job ahead of me now but at least I know it needs to be done! Cheers bud! Sammi x

Thank u for making this video. Great explanation.. A small query. What is the point in adjusting the air flow direction using swirl flaps.. How the combustion could be better while adjusting the air flow direction.

Hi there, nice demonstration, it's clear how they work. But...no explanation why are they foe and what is advantage without them ? If the car maker install them, then why ?

Fantastic explanation. One question if these control air into the engine where does the soot come from that I have seen on them. I like your video's alot.

Had one fall to bits on a alfa romeo mito. Sucked the flap in and distoyed the engine. When I showed the customer she just cried. We sold the car as a going concern rather than swap the engine

aye for sure, hard to explain to the punter there are moving parts in the inlet and it has wrecked itself
@basketballjones67823 жыл бұрын
And all this time, I thought they would variably block off one of the two intake ports behind one of the two intake valves, causing air to actually swirl *inside* the combustion chamber due to the imbalance of pressure and air volume between the two (asymmetrical) intake ports versus simply getting a bit turbulent as you purport. If your theory is to hold water, please explain how this butterfly valve creates turbulence when it is full closed or full open.

Hi Dave, came looking at your KZbin uploads for info on VW/AUDI 1.6 TDI CAYC air intake manifold swirl flap motor. Having watched your vid on 1.6 tdi EGR cooler valve how it works. I am assuming swirl flap motor also uses 5.0+ & 5.0- to actuate the swirl flap shaft. Please can you provide 5.0+ & 5.0- pin numbers. As l cannot find a wiring diagram for this motor.
@MalavDesai4 ай бұрын
Hi Colin, did you ever find out the pins? As I want to test my swirl flap motor as it hasn't ever moved from fully open and either it has been mapped out or is broken. It is supposed to do a full range movement every 6 cycles of the ignition.
@alouisschafer7212 Жыл бұрын
So when you lock these fully opened does it improve anything? Probably not by your explanation.

For swirl flaps electrically actuatted, the default position is open?
@gasgas26893 жыл бұрын
That was very interesting but I don't think you emphasised enough that it is exhaust gases that are destroying the swirl flaps and clogging up all the pipes and EGR valve on the way. But at least the repair is a job that an average DIY person can do: no heavy lifting, no special tools, no getting underneath the car. I hate the fact that the designers have to do all this to meet emissions in a lab test but once it has done a few thousand miles all the good intentions have gone out of the window leaving the owner with big repair bills.

Hi , very good JOB! i have a question regarding flaps on Volvo D5 , mine when i push the rod ( i disconnect the commande side) with my finger , it seems that is very easy and without any resistance. Yours is the same? it could mean that the flaps inside do not move? how can check it without removing the intake manifold? best regards

Started changing my swirl flaps and one of them is missing, the one opposite the linkage end. Do they get sucked in the engine if they fall in the port. Tried vacuuming out but nothing is coming out of the hole. Waiting for a camera to arrive

Can bē that new swirl flaps can be harder to turn?
@gasgas26892 жыл бұрын
I noticed that when I fitted new swirl flaps to my Volvo D5 the actuator seemed quite stiff to turn. I am hoping that is OK and the actuator motor won't burn out. I did squirt oil on the bits that moved before final assembly.
@lyudmilvarbanov7294 Жыл бұрын
The actuator must be adapted by VIDA-it is free.Go to diagnostic/vehicle communication/double click on ECM/advance/expand ECM/choose swirl actuator adaptation
