I work on the west highland railway line that runs adjacent to that river and every year I say to myself I must come back and do a bit of gold panning in the summer time. I never expected to find that much on my first visit to this place. It can take years to learn river systems so maybe the river gods were looking down on me. The ground is too shallow to support trees like oak its mostly rock with a bit of top soil.

@@garethzero Scotland was once almost 100% covered in a vast Forest, some of the ancient Caledonian forest which formed after the last ice age can still be found in areas of Tyndrum, most of the deforestation of the Scottish Highlands was a result of subsequent Wars and the need for fuel and building materials for the British Army and Naval forces.. and also the industrial revolution... When you remove a forest you also remove the soil from the land and the ability for people to sustain a living from that land. Tyndrum/ The Highlands could easily have supported Oak trees, before the deforestation.. but the Caledonian Pine tree was dominant in the Highlands.

Last place I went camping was tyndrum with my dad back in 2016. You panned right where I did at the beginning. I also went around new the tiny bridge. I have to get back there sometime soon and pitch myself a little tent. For the memories.

Hello Gary and thanks for the comments. If you can pop over to Scotland you will always be finding gold many locations like Leadhills, Wanlockhead etc. You could try the river Coquet or the rivers in the Northern Pennines near Nenthead. I would research why the Romans wanted to settle near Vindolanda too (Just a thought) The best thing about prospecting is to try your luck on any nearby river or stream and find the bedrock with cracks in it or where the gravels are covering the bedrock.

It's all about using the timeline to tell the story. Look at unsyncing the audio too. You can over lay your narration with a B role shot. They use picture / story boards in the film industry to give the camera man an idea of what they want. There's a lot to learn and it's a great part of any hobby that you might be trying to film.

Most people try the main mountains in north Wales and snowdonia, but the Brecon Beacons especially the southern end and the Black mountains are geologically similar and may be worth a shot too - keep up the great work I love the high production values, which beats some production quality on TV.

@@martin096 he said "renewable _panning_" -- presumably the idea being that he is panning for fun, not for profit, so the gold is returned to the river so other people can partake in the hobby. The natural processes by which the gold becomes available in the stream bed take much longer than the human processes to extract it so if the gold was not returned it would become depleted at that location and the hobby would be less sustainable.

In the late eighties BP had a team prospecting not a million miles from there. They found a discreet deposit that was nearly economic not least for the rare earths found in association. Lots of mineralisation all around Argyll.

I enjoy developing my editing and film making hobby and find the gold prospecting a great subject to work with. For me it's about proving it is there or not. I have received strongly worded replies for showing the tiniest of pieces in other films but to me it's never a waste of time or about finding that £50k nugget. This is my prospecting journey so far and hopefully a few more trips to come. I wouldn't even know who to sell it to. Thanks for the comments and dropping by.

Cheers buddy, It took me a while to get the confidence to fly a drone . It's a lot of money tied up into a technical gadget where the slightest mistake could be game over. They have a mode called "Tripod " which slows the controls and the speed down by loads which makes for some cinematic footage in tight spaces.

nice haul, liked the comparison pics at the end, you can see the difference in the different areas, not being biased or owt, the welsh gold stands out more, it is more buttery than the others, I've been prospecting an area in mid wales as I live in that area and the gold i'm finding is 22ct, did an acid test on a bit

I have that same sluice box, set up differently . however , at least in the states a plastic soda pallet, like a pepsi pallet(its a good blue to show gold) actually will fit on the end of the flair to be used and a unitized classifyer/screen . flip the pallet upside down and set over the flair, lightly push it in the flairs direction until it holds, it will have a natural pivot point to adjust the water flow slightly and pitch to get the large bits to both fall clear and be propperly washed as they do so.

@@MrDazP1adv3ntures we only have placer deposit gold dust in my area for the most part ,so im not going to be seeing any big gold that i know of. This isn't known to be a gold producing area and nobody has officially found any lodegold so nuggets are super super rare. However i have studied the history of the area and read alot of old news articles , study the geography and found a portion of the bedrock here is connected to a massive formation that is known to contain precious minerals and gems of great variety. I have read alot of accounts of people finding a few grams a day throughout the local mountains as well. Both in past and present times.... I live in new york state , u.s.a. Im not even supposed to keep any gold or silver i find. It is supposed to be handed in to governmental authorities of newyork to claim the gold in ,get this...king george IIIs name!. Called the kings law and has been on the books since 1771. I think this has alot to do with why everyone says there isn't any gold to find . what i do find alot of is ore samples and gemstones. I know in the late 1880s a 104.6 gram platinum nugget was found in my town...combined with the Local mindset of disinterest in prospecting and the like on general, it is kind of inspiring and motivating to know that im the only person to seriously hunt minerals in my area and then read that stuff...if noone has looked, i have a good shot at finding more chunks like that platinum nugget.

Nice, Ive always wanted to try panning for gold in Scotland. Ive done a lot of forestry work in Scotland and every time I go up a hill and see some wee fresh water river or a dried up fountain I want to pan it =D. There is a lot of Gold in Scotland but you better watch what you take or the Duke wont be happy =)

I always have a fond memory of a childhood holiday where we went up and over past Glen Lyon dam and me dad parked up near the mouth of an old gold mine there, needless to say adventurous chaps we were back then did wander in a bit but no lights and my mum told us right off, sadly no gold to be found there or in the waters but always wanted to go see if its still there lol

I use only tea spoons and a hand scoop to move small and the barest of materials . On the walk up there was literally a crater exposed ! Now that would shock most people rather then my wife wondering why the kitchen draw was a bit a shy of spoons to stir the coffee. Thanks for watching buddy.

@@MrDazP1adv3ntures it was great, got taken in there by scotgold, quite wet inside and some old workings have a foot or so of water. My masters project at uni was comparing the gold to silver ratio of the electrum (gold ore essentially, its a mix of native gold and silver) from a bedrock source near the mine to placer gold in the river orchy to see whether they had the same geological source. (Spoiler, they didnt)

Nice vid yeah there has always been gold we found a 1 grammer inside a quartz rock on our last day as we use the hammer and grinder for breaking up rocks as well as the usual panning but not tried a sluice that looks pretty darn good - you missed the whirpool but you need to dive to get to the bottom of it but its a good choke point in the river and great for a swim after a hot day. Might also be good to take the old XP Deus - just depends how much you can carry as those fields when you move off the path can be treacherous even in summer! Connonish has loads of gold still to be found! The mine was empty when we were last there - did you not try the small stream that runs out of the mine entrance or have a go on the mini railway carriages lol

Go for it Liam, there might not be any gold in West Yorkshire and the Lancashire borders but it's always great to practice on a nearby river and see if you can find lead shot or fishing weights, that way you know you can find the heavier particles. Black sand is a good one to learn how to separate too. Best of luck Liam.

That's a good point Liam, this was in the gorge of Walsden high up. I need to go back there and have another go. The only thing that you have to make sure of, is that your equipment is 100% clean from when you have been to proper gold bearing areas. I did give everything a good clean before hand so it is possible to find a diddy spec.

Gold panning in the UK doesn't allow dredges but you can use a hand suction pump to draw gravels up into a bucket.

Hi Luke, the campsite in the village allows you to pan next to the pitches where the river runs by. It is a popular place to visit these days, more so after the BBC iPlayer series - Gold Town.
