MRE Review: Chicken Pulled In Buffalo Style Sauce (Buffalo Chicken)

This review is a little different from most of my previous ones. It's a bit of a family affair. We were camping in the Otter River State Forest recently and I wanted to make a couple outdoor MRE videos while we were there (which in itself is kind of different for my videos). One side of my wife's family comes from the Buffalo, NY area, so I wanted her opinion on an MRE's version of Buffalo Chicken. Keep in mind that she's not a fan of MREs (which balances out the soft spot I have for them), so when she says that the food is "edible" that's a pretty high compliment! My kids (who have been seen in my Mini MRE Reviews) also make an appearance. Please understand that I'm doing something kind of different by putting my whole family in this video. I'm hoping that people will respect me and my family and keep the comments civil. I will pull this video down if it doesn't seem like people will be willing to show that respect. I know that's a very real possibility on KZbin, but just wanted to give my viewers something a little different to watch.
The Buffalo Chicken was pretty tasty. It's definitely got a little kick to it, but it's not too spicy (I'm actually surprised they didn't include some Tabasco Sauce for people who want their Buffalo Chicken really spicy). The Fried Rice isn't anything exciting, but it's pretty good, and mixing the two together seems to be the way to go. I don't like coffee, but the sweet Mocha Cappuccino drink is delicious.
Menu No.24 Chicken Pulled In Buffalo Style Sauce (2010)
-Chicken, Pulled, With Buffalo Style Sauce
-Fried Rice
-Wheat Snack Bread
-Cheese Spread With Jalapenos
-Patriotic Sugar Cookies
-M&Ms
-Mocha Cappuccino Instant Powder
-Flameless Ration Heater
-Hot Beverage Bag
-Spoon
-Accessory Pack (Iced Tea Drink Mix, Salt, Chewing Gum, Moist Towelette, Toilet Paper)

Why don't people like MRE's? I feel like most people are spoiled by the fact that we have so much available they forget to appreciate these foods that are amazingly portable and are able to last long periods of time WHILE STILL TASTING LIKE ACTUAL FOOD. Shit, after hard labor, I can just eat straight up plain rice by itself and it'll taste like heaven shat in my mouth. LOL. Your daughters look like they're having fun though, haha. Granted, while your wife didn't like it, at least she made an effort to try it and didn't belittle you. That's a good sign of love :D

Dev Pandya I get ya. But They are MRE's for a reason though, and if you're still getting good exercise in, the food's going to taste fantastic cause you're hungry, haha.

Fair question. I was in the service a long time ago. A number of years ago I got a bit nostalgic for MREs (which I hadn't had in many years). I decided to try some out and was impressed with how much they'd improved since I was in. I probably would have had enough of them and wouldn't have any now if it weren't for the interest people have shown in these videos.

Subscribed! I just received my first cases of MREs (civilian type) that were discounted due to being from 2010, and I'm looking forward to hiking with them. I've really enjoyed your videos, and it's nice to see you test this meal in the field, so to speak. All the best to you and your family.

Glad to hear it! And thanks for watching! I will say that I always expected the outdoor reviews to do better (view-wise) than they have. Some people asked for them, and I figured the fact that they're done in the "natural environment" of the MREs and they give a change of pace from the standard "tray on a table" review that everyone (including myself) ALWAYS do would make them popular. But, not so much! Oh well.

That's MORE than understandable! I figure these videos are mainly for people who have never had MREs before and are curious to see what they're like and how to use them. While I never had to eat them for a month straight I will say that I was pretty tired of them by the time I got out of the service, but a number of years later I started thinking about them and felt a need to try one again.

Yes it is. I love camping in them. It's certainly not "roughing it" like real tent camping, but it's a LOT easier to do with the kids. We still do some tent camping (like this weekend for instance), but when we can get a yurt we will.

All the genuine MREs (made by Sopakco, Ameriqual and The Wornick Company) contain the most components. As far as commercial MREs the Meal Kit Supply ones are the closest I've seen to Genuine MREs in amount of food included. Most of the commercial ones don't seem to include a side dish along with the main entree, but Meal Kit Supply ones do.

First, I loved the change - and your co-reviewers are precious indeed. Second, you need to bring that rock back to your studios for future reviews, as a giggle. Third, as a suggestion, please show how to heat a beverage sometime. Even if you don't drink coffee, the rest of us would like to see how it's made. Finally, for everyone else, combining MRE items works great. Crumble the crackers or one of the breads as a bed for such things as taco mix, buffalo chicken or meatballs. Thanks

As always interesting videos buddy. Quick question, how many menus are there currently and have you tried them all?
@gschultz9
@gschultz9 10 жыл бұрын
There are 24 different menus in genuine MREs (12 in Case A and 12 in Case B). They change up menus a little bit every year and will add a menu or two while getting rid of something else, so they're always changing somewhat. I have not had all the current menus.

I DID bring the rock home! It already appeared in the contest video and will be featured as the "Rock or Something" in upcoming videos. I did heat up some coffee in one of the videos (don't remember offhand which one at the moment), mainly because of comments asking to see it. I'll try to heat up another beverage in the future.
@gschultz9
@gschultz9 11 жыл бұрын
I think that's a "recommended" sort of estimate. The military can replace them regularly, so it's not like they sit on the shelf that long anyway. In the real world they can certainly last a lot longer than that if properly stored. the estimate is also based more on taste quality than edibility. After a few years the taste will start to suffer, but the food generally remains edible for years. Of course at SOME point it will go bad, so they have to give a "safe" estimate.

Huh? Did you mean "cold or hot"? ANd are you referring to the cappuccino drink? I added cold water because I prefer the drink cold. I don't drink coffee (or any hot drink other than hot cocoa for that matter), but the coffee-like drink mixes in MREs are pretty tasty. My wife probably would have preferred it hot, but it is what it is.
